Gees i cant speak for the whole nation but personally I like the old rock and roll standards,ZZ Top does it well for me La Grange is one brilliant track,Frank Zappa always makes me smile,Some good Aussie headbangers Like Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, and that canadian Feller Neil Young.I like nearly all Blues/Jazz that ive heard, gees i could waffle on all night about music,a lot of the newer stuff leaves me a bit flat.Pearl Jams Last Kiss brings a tear to the eye, music is a very emotional experience for me,an old music teacher once told me that i listen with my soul.

Saw ZZ top with Lynard Skynard a couple yrs back, great concert. I don't know if I could pick just one song of all time but I have always really liked Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin and Freebird by Lynard Skynard. I really like the older classic rock compared to todays music. Pink Flloyd is awesome to,so many great songs out there, hard to pick just one.

Count me in there. My favorite two R&R as well. Time has expanded my taste to include some good ole Country as well now though.

that brings back memories. i saw zz top back in germany a long time ago, one of my first rock concerts.

a few years ago i had the pleasure of hanging out an afternoon with zz top's drummer, frank beard, at his house in houston.

another rock'n'roll song that is a suitable candidate for best rock'n'roll song of all times is "rock'n'roll all night" by kiss. definitely a classic.

defining 'best' as in skillful and artistically outstanding i would have to nominate "a change of seasons" by dream theater.

It's been said, #1 song of 1957 "Little Darling" by the Diamonds, "Don
t be Cruel", Elvis, 1958, "Tonight's the Night", Rod Stewart, 1976. So, so many! I just want your opinion, if you please. I play guitar and I love music. Placido Domingo is my favorite tenor. Just want to hear from fellow music lovers, eh Greg?

Im jealous now, ZZ live would have been sweet.Having lived in Rural areas most of my life i havent seen a lot of concerts, In Aus the big names only seem to do the capital cities and my nearest capital is brisbane about 750 miles away. Some of the Aussie bands do play around here, and local talent abounds.

Have to agree with Zeppelin,Pink Floyd,ZZ Top,and the rest of the "classic" R&R,but...

You gotta throw in anything by Stevie Ray Vaughn...

Best popular love song: First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack

Best story-song: Sniper - Harry Chapin

Dirtiest Song to get air-play: Dynamo Hum - Frank Zappa

tough to pick a all time favorite song. Im into differnt types of music from different generations and have lots of bands I listen too. Bands I listen to most REM, U2, RUSH, Lemon Heads, Pearl Jam....and stuff along those lines. I also like a lot of older stuff..Beatles, Ottis Reading and a whole mess of other stuff. I pretty much just like music in general. There isnt really a whole lot of new stuff going on these days that Im crazy about. I even find myself listening to some modern counrty and some dance music here and there. I even like some of the early rap stuff like RUN DMC and so on. I pretty much just appreciate music overal; there are things that can be appreciated about all kinds of music. Im also into a lot of the early Jazz and Blues.....stuff like Miles Davis and so on. I even enjoy classical music on a rare occasion.
I like a lot of stuff from the 80's

IMHO,
Whats funny is your #1 keeps changing all your life.
Listen to it a gazillion times and you will soon find another #1.
I like all the decades, but I think the 60's made way for the 70's which I think are the best.
It seems no other decades had as much impact as the 60's and 70's, period.

In memory of Whipat and Tuff

I can't pick...I can't prove it!

And as a former professional musician, you'd think I could narrow it down to just one rock and roll song.
For me, music crosses over and blends. So my list includes things other than rock.

Here's a too-long list of my favorites:

Almost anything classical ---- symphonies, chamber music, whatever.

Song most likely to be played incorrectly by a cover band - Aerosmith's "Walk This Way".

Best one-hit wonder - Alannah Myles "Black Velvet"

Favorite LedZep songs - "Kashmir", "What is and What Shall Never Be",
"The Crunge", "Ramble On"

Best concert I ever attended - Jethro Tull - An awesome performance!

Best rock album - Cream's "Disraeli Gears" tied with Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms"

Best album by a solo performer with a good band - Alanis Morrisette's "Jagged Little Pill" - wow!

Best songwriter/performer of rock and folk - Joni Mitchell

Most under-recognized performer and songwriter - Deborah Holland

Best instrumental album of all time - Larry Carlton's "Friends" c1983.
Features a killer arrangement of "Tequila" and other great works.
Most played album out of hundreds in my collection.

Most musically talented rock and pop groups of all time:

Sorry I can't pick one or even five or ten!

The Beatles
Chicago
Cream
Deep Purple
Dire Straits
The Eagles
Earth, Wind, and Fire
Fleetwood Mac
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Police
Queen
Rush
Steely Dan
Yes
ZZ Top

Honorable mention:

Huey Lewis and the News
Jethro Tull
The Rolling Stones
Level 42
The Who

EDIT: I had to come back and enter Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, and Pink Floyd to the lists. Missed them first time around.

Best Guitarist(s) - Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Howe, Jett Broughton*

Best Bassist(s) - Abraham Laboriel, Mark King, Nathan East, Paul McCartney, Stanley Clarke,
Gordon Sumner, Bootsy Collins, Ron Carter, Ray Brown, Chris Squire

Best Drummer(s) - Stewart Copeland and two guys I performed with, T.K. Lively and Mike Bolt. Rock solid and precise!

*Jett is someone I use to perform with years ago. Awesomely talented guitarist and now a professional in medicine.

Best bassists. Add Herbie Flowers (Sky) and the African guy who played with Paul Simon on Gracelands.

Best Guitarists. Add Roy Buchanan, Mark Knopfler, Craig Chaquico (Starship), Kevin Peek (Sky), Gary Moore, Robin Trower etc etc.

Most under-rated and forgotten band - The Guess Who (one of Canada's all-time great exports!)

Doc, you're correct! How'd I leave off Pink Floyd and Deep Purple?

'The Dark Side of the Moon' is a classic - possibly the best album ever and Deep Purple is regarded by some to be the creator of heavy metal. 'Machine Head' features some of the greatest musical compositions of rock.

There's many great talents out there and I can't remember them all. Guess there's only so much we can listen and recall in a lifetime!

The only drugs I'm taking are for what ails me according to my Drs..

Hmmm.....

I actually own all of the Genesis and Phil Collins CD's, except for the very first Genesis album, which mysteriously went missing.

I just don't think he's that innovative or interesting as a drummer. He's got a great sense of rhythm, no doubt, but I don't think he could stand up to someone like Dave Grohl or Jimmy Chamberlain...even when Jimmy is doping up.

And while we are on the subject of missing musicians, drums - Tony Thompson (the REAL drummer Collins is mistaken for on "In The Air Tonight") and Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band. Lead Guitar - Steve Vai and Adrian Vandenberg, Bass - Steve Harris, Keyboards - John Paul Jones and Benmont Tench.

THANK YOU!!
I'm not very up on the different musicians but when I saw this name,
Yngwie Malmsteen, I had to investigate. This guy is absolutely AWESOME!!

I downloaded his Flamenco Diablo, Dream Suite opus 4, Beethoven's 5th, Overture 1383 and four others. Now I better go find a cd of his to buy }>
His playing reminds me somewhat of Eric Clapton

Yeah, he IS good, and he thinks so too! Yngwie is pretty full of himself, but giving credit where credit is due, I would have to say that I listen to his music in awe to this day, regardless of what I think of him as a person. He's immitated by many, but he really pioneered the neo-classical sound, except taking into account Randy Rhodes "Dee" instrumental. He uses a lot of aeolian and phrygian mode scales in his style. His influences can be heard in his "Inspiration" Album or CD, where he does covers of the guys he looked up to when he was younger which included Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, and Kansas to name a few. He's got some sweet melodic riffs, and he's fast as hell. A few more to check out if you like Yngwie's style are: Michael Angelo, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman (has a cool oriental sound to his riffs), Tony MacAlpine (concert pianist turned neo-classical shredder). The "Great Kat" (classical violinist turned speedmetal shredder) has some pretty good stuff by Paganini, Beetoven, and Chopin, but she's pretty raw in her lyrics. If you want to *really warp your brain, get your hands on some Blues Saraceno, he's pretty crazy too, but he's a little reminiscent of Eddy VanHalen's style.
I really liked White Lion when they were going strong, and I really hoped that someday I would hear more of Vito Bratta's playing, It's impressive stuff if you listen to it. He supposedly did some recordings with George Lynch, but I have never been able to find any. Speaking of Lynch's, anyone still remember Steve and his band "Autograph"?

Anyhowzen, I'm glad you like Yngwie, he kicks axe big time!

Giddy

One of my favourites has always been "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin. Sums up how most men perceive women beautifully.

Being an aussie I have many favourite songs from bands here:

Some of these are: Evi (Parts 1,2 & 3)- Stevie Wright, Friday on my Mind - Easybeats, Keh Sanh - Cold Chisel, She's got the Jacks - ACDC

And the beat goes on..... ..... drums keep a pounding rhythm in my brain....ladedada... (sorry couldn't help meself started humming, that one was by Sonny and Cher, I think.

As previously mentioned, there are so many great songs out there.

The best song is the one that takes you away from all the day to day stuff that you don't like and takes you back to a place of magic. When you probably didn't have a lot of responsibilities and your body bounced back like super elastic bubble plastic from all the self abuse!!

I think your'e right Orchid, Bob Wills did Rollie Pollie, I think that he was almost exclusively Texas Swing. I would say that Les Paul and Mary Ford were closer to being rockers. Chet Atkins was probably the most innovative guitarist to do everything from country, jazz, rock, blues, swing, everything. One of my favorite CDs is the Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler one. I liked Yankee Doodle Dixie as one of my favorite pieces by Chester. He inspired many people like my uncle who passed away last year. My Uncle was by far, the "Best" guitarist I have ever heard, now God has one of the best pickers to ever grace this planet, and it's unfortunate that more people didn't get to hear him. He left me his prototype Abel Axe, which is the only one of it's particular configuration. It's made of aircraft aluminum, and has a custom neck and headstock. He inspires me to this day.

I'm right there with you Giddy. I was born/raised near Merle Travis' home and am still partial to his finger-style picking/struming. (Chet mastered that style also.) There were pickers in that area/time-frame that never gained notoriety, however theye were among the absolute best.

i like flying fingers by joe maphis.

as for bob wills he did it but look at the song writer i believe you will see it is Hank W. Sr. and he did do it i have it on several tapes recoreds and even on the computer and cd's.

also have a lot of bob wills and other country artist. ? some where about 18 hours just on the computer and about 700 lps and other records lot of time back as kid.

seen a show on tv awhile back they listed the best big bands. i agreed with them all but they left out bob and that makes this texan mad.

"Rock Around the Clock", 1953?4? Bill Haley & the Comets.
Reason: that was the first song that launched the RocknRoll style, from which developed all our favorite artists and groups that we like today, including Elvis.
Note that Yomama didn't say our favorite song, but the #1 OF ALL TIME

And what aspiring guitarist didn't learn "Stairway to Heaven", as one his first songs? I remember thinking I really learned something until I went into the music store and saw almost every other young guitarist playing the same thing... I think that almost killed it for me. One of my favorite songs to play is "The Love Song" by Tesla.

I remeber hearing that the top grossing single was Bryan Adams..."I do it For You" That cheesy love ballard from that Kevin Costner movie. That record may have been broken by now but a few years back I think it was the top money making single to ever be released. If you remember, back then they played the crap out of that thing on the radio for a long time. HE Cashed in on that big time.

How about the Boss?

and Buddy Holly?

great but obscure album:

'The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus' by Spirit

My favorite musician: Harry Nillson

Second favorite: David Byrne

a couple of songs that i love to sing:

'Dream A Little Dream of Me' Mama Cass

'Do You Wanna Dance?' Bette Middler

and almost anything that i know the words to

and has anyone heard of the Nylons? kinda doo-wop a cappella. and not that crappy song of theirs they play on the radio. they were actually a one album wonder, too.

I played "China Grove" at least one hundred times in nightclubs in the Carolinas and across the southern U.S. And I can still remember and play the bass line, lick for lick!

The Doobies made some fun music! I should have put them in my Honorable Mention category!

One I forgot to mention, which is one of my favorites is the "Subdudes", very different style and really good. Kind of a Cajun/Blues/Rock style. The Standards are a good accapella group.

I too, have to go with Bill Haley and the Comets, playing Rock Around the Clock! I still get chills, whenever I hear that famous, "One, Two, Three O'Clock Rock!"

I must have been about 14-15 years old then. Man, I lived through the Rock and Roll era, and didn't even know it was something special. I just thought it was life! Would love to do it all over again, but know that is impossible. What a time!

This post is dedicated to everyone who has ever listened to music that his parents, or anyone else, told him or her was "just noise, where's the melody, that's trash!"

Best rock and roll record is, of course, entirely subjective. I submit for your listening enjoyment, two of my favorites among many:

"My Baby Gives It Away" Pete Townshend, off the "Rough Mix" album recorded with Ronnie Lane ( Rolling Stone voted it the best guitar lick of 1976(?)

"Can I Get A Witness" Lee Michaels' cover of the Motown tune, off his "5th" album (also had "Do You Know What I Mean" on it.

Also:

Best psychedelic cut of all time-King Crimson-"Court of the Crimson King (Also done very well by Michael Quattro {older brother of Suzi} Jam Band on the album "Paintings".

Best modern Chuck Berry-style rock and roll-Bob Seger, hands down and thumbs up.

First rock and roll record- A lot of people give the nod to "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenton, produced by Ike Turner. Don't forget "Hound Dog" by Willie Mae Thornton and "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" by Big Joe Turner. (Best cover of that song-Huey Lewis and the News-"Four Chords and Several Years Ago", forget Bill Haley.

Best cover of a forgotten Rockabilly classic-"Ubangi Stomp"-John Prine-"Pink Cadillac" album.

Best band to sell a LOT of records that no one listens to anymore-Savoy Brown- recommended-"Lion's Share", "Street Corner Talking".

Best band very few people have heard of and, or, remember-Mason Profitt-"Rockfish Crossing" album (I think that's the name) has one side recorded live that sounds better than most bands in the studio.

Best music send-up-forget "Spinal Tap", try to track down "The Rutles". I have it on video in a deteriorating copy. Will make a copy for you and send it for the cost of the cassette and shipping.

Just a few rambling thoughts. Thanks for listening. JKS

Pink Floyd
Supertramp
Steely Dan
Dire Straits (two albums from before they got famous and commercial)
Yes
Eagles

and so many more I just can't remember for now (as I'm not at home !!)

A couple of bands/artists I found thru AudioGalaxy that I never would have heard of otherwise in Australia.

String Cheese Incident - an absolutely brilliant live jam band a la Grateful Dead. Country rock oriented.
The Hellecasters. Three (or four?)lead guitars, all playing Fender Telecasters.
This one's not rock. Béla Fleck - banjo virtuoso - plays bluegrass, jazz and classical on a 5 string banjo. Awesome.

Gary Moore is Thin Lizzy's lead guitarist, and a bloody good one at that.

I nearly added Blackmore to my list. I really like his work on
Machine Head and other Deep Purple works.

But I also left out Brian May.

Bad Allyn!

#92. "songs"
In response to sputnic (Reply # 90)

Really too much to mention, I like tons of music. Right now I'd be in the mood for:

Give it away - Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

All of 'Get Your Ya-Ya's Out' - The Rolling Stones.

If I had to name a pure 'rock and roll' song like the thread title suggested, I mean real rock and roll, it'd be something like Jailhouse Rock by Elvis or Little Richard's Good Golly Miss Molly.

And Robert Gordon's Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache.

In response to above posts: Best bass player imo is/was Jaco Pastorius and I think Phil Collins is a good drummer. He can't sing but he drums OK.

Lotta deja vu here, it's like I opened a New Musical Express from 1975 and looked at the poll winners. Odd. Don't anybody like anything new?

Interesting thread

God, there are soooo many good musicians. No wonder so many live marginaly. Alvin Lee, Yes! Saw him, up close, in a bar in Kalamazoo. Incredible. For all the ones I love, the Allman Brothers remain my all time favorite band. Greg Allman, favorite singer - so soulfull. Duane - another great, dead talent. What a loss. And the guys in Skynyrd and Stevie Ray.

Yomama - What do you mean you married the guy? The composer of Camilia or Hall or Oats? Tell all
