"OT: my new ADSL connection"

Hi guys & gals,

I have been reading the forum, but not posting much, as the lovely dial-up connection likes to drop me without warning. }> I've also been busy with the life that I have outside of this forum.

The SWBell ADSL NIC & modem arrived on Tuesday. I installed it yesterday, but I had to sweet talk the NIC s/w into loading. Arrggg. I managed to set up 5 email accounts, using a non-SWBell dial-up connection and without installing the crappy s/w that was included on one of the CD's. I found the instructions, buried in a website, on how to set up an SWBell DUN. Hehehe. Tested one of the email accounts and it worked.

SWBell has me scheduled for ADSL line activation on Monday, but it's here now! I have the dial-up modem line going through the APC UPS, so went out and bought a new surge protector with phone line support. Plugged the ADSL lines into it and into the wall jack this afternoon. ADSL modem had green lights; green means "go," so set the s/w up to connect. Amazing.

I'm using the dial-up line now, as I have to reconfigure 5 AT&T dial-up accounts to run with SBCGlobal and also set up the 5 SBCGlobal accounts in Outlook Express. It will take me awhile to notify all the folks in my address book, the newsletter folks, and others about a new email address. So, once I get it set up, I will be managing mega email accounts through OE for a few weeks. Then I can drop the AT&T dial-up accounts and have SWBell disconnect the phone line that I use for dial-up modem.

fun & games,

marti

#5. "update"
In response to marti (Reply # 0)

I sat down the other day and configured my AT&T email accounts so I can use them through SBCGlobal. Have been using the ADSL connection, but have many problems.

I finally called SWBell on Sunday and they said that maybe the problems were due to the fact that my line wasn't totally activated. I also properly removed the NIC in the control panel, in safe mode, took the computer down and removed the NIC, and then put it back in. Took forever to get the drivers back on. Same problems.

I called SWBell last night & the next level of tech support is supposed to call me today.

The problems are: OE never polls for new posts to NewsGroups, I have to check manually; when I click on a link from the QLToolbar or from "favs" I often get a blank screen, a cursor and an hourglass -- eventually the site will load; the third problem is that "sometimes" when clicking on a NG or opening a site, I get an error message that incates that I'm working "offline," which I am not.

All this sounds like I'm not getting a constant signal, but that's just my guess.

Hope they figure this out soon, as it's not fun to try and work with all the problems.

Congratulations on your new ADSL ,Marti. After getting all your stuff sorted-when -you "feel the need for speed". check out Dsl Reports...You might find out how to get 8mgps down load speeds. If you haven't already got it.
Later,

Hi Kenny,

Have already been to DSLR and did the suggested tweaks.

Speed test results from http://dfw.speakeasy.net/

Test running..........
** Speed 1158(down)/106(up) kbps **
(At least 23 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Marti, I just ran that test over here and got nearly the same results as you did. 1158 down and 132 up.

My browser was reporting an accurate picture of the download speeds at around 140 +/- a couple. And that has been consistant for sometime now.

Didn't know, for sure, until now, just how accurate the function was. Now I know!

Thanks for that link, Marti. It rocks.

SloHands,

The guys on the DSLR SWBell forum (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,swbell) are recommending the Speakeasy test.

Note that Speakeasy has several test sites: http://www.speakeasy.net/main.php?page=sup_pops users in other parts of the country may want to find a test site closer to them.

Marti,

I noticed that! And that's a good idea.

Have they called for a line check yet? Ask them who they are or represent when they do. I'll bet it's Sprint fibre optics being used. Was on my side of town. I remember seeing crews laying cable last couple of years down Richmond Ave.

Fact is, there is a crew that's been working near me for the past 3 months. Don't know how far out they are going, but Cinco Ranch is about 5 miles west of me with a few hundred thousand new homes and they may be adding a connection route past my location. (?)

Marti & Slohands
ASI will do line test on your line if your modem is not syncing with your line.
ASI did numerous line test when I was hounding them to uncap my line. They even checked my line in the field for bridges and load coils (which i am not for sure what they are). Always with the same results that my line would not support speed over 384,000 kbps. So I am stuck with that until RR cable becomes available.

I tested my line at Speakeasy and results are consistent with Dsl reports speed test.(313 & 303 download and 100 & 103 upload). You both have great speeds compared to mine.

Marti, hope ASI fixed your problems today without capping your line speed lower than you are getting now. Beware they will cap it if that is what it takes to keep you from having connection problems or losing line sync.tailback

Tailback,

Did not get the call that I was expecting between the hours of 1 pm & 6 pm. Called back at 6 pm. Called back at 9 pm. Now I'm going to miss an outing with some friends, setting around and waiting for a call tomorrow.

Am using the AT&T dialup now, and everything works perfectly, but much slower.

Marti, at the Speakeasy site, can my cable be tested or is it just for ???? Reason I ask...everytime I attempt to test it, after hitting that 'button' - within 5 or so seconds, my computer gets a black screen and I have to end up shutting down completely. What is also weird, this happens when I tried it on my daughter's computer also.
We both have the same cable ISP AND WinME.

Any comments from anyone?

Pat,

It's not the aggravation so much as the wait for everything to come together.

First the hardware, which is a "no-brainer" to install.

Then the software, which is also not that big a deal.

Then establishing the account and connection, which seems to take forever.

You'd think it would move quicker, but it doesn't. Patience is a LARGE pill.

All together is took me about 12 days from the time I requested service until I established the connection and I had a previous account to work with. Go figure!

Marti, If you think It's PITA now, It was even worse when ADSL originally became available. The telcos hated it because it was a threat to their lucrative T1 business, so there was a lot of foot dragging, and no one at the phone companies had a clue about how to market and service DSL customers.

Just got off the phone with a friend who should have been hooked up today. Our phone company is Ameritech (owned by SBC) and they sent him the self-install kit last week. He called them a few minutes ago to confirm that we could go ahead with the installation. They told him that they discovered on December 13 that DSL will not work on his line because he has fiberoptic cable. Nobody bothered to call him. He has a second phone line which is supposed to be copper and he was told that his connection date for that one will be January 2. They insist on sending him a second complete installation kit.

In my own case (in January), they hooked me up to the wrong phone line and it took them several days to figure it out. Have patience, Marti.

Someone is jerking him around. Unless you're way out in the sticks, all phone lines today are fiberoptic except for the short run from the telco drop box to the customer (the so called "last mile"), which is copper. There is never fiber going to a residence, if there was, you could not connect a phone to it.

I was on the phone with the high level tech support guy (works for ASI) for over 2 hours this afternoon. He had me remove all of the DSL s/w and then remove the NIC. Then we put the NIC back in and finally got the drivers to load properly.

So far, everything is working properly.
