"You know what"

I'm not going to post here anymore. I'm sick of Shelly attacking me because he believes I'm stupid, or "just a girl". Thanks to those of you who did help me, though.

Liz

meekocmere,
I don't know what prompted this from you and I don't have time to go back and look, but I have been around here long enough to tell you a few things.

1. Shelly is (along with a handful of others) this sites most valuable resource.

2. He does not suffer fools easily; he is a very busy man and he donates a huge amount of his time (for free) to helping make this place what it is.
I know that if you preface your questions by telling us that you are a novice, pretty well everyone including Shelly will cut you some slack. If you don't do that, well sometimes a question may seem like a stupid one and the answer may not be all that you would have liked.

3. And don't feel alone if you got a kind of curt answer from Shelly. I think pretty well all of us here have been whacked by him at one time or another for posting something that was inaccurate or misleading or just not appropriate. Personally, I appreciate his criticism very much.

Think it over, sometime you may have a problem that only one person can answer and Shelly will be there to answer it for you.

Hang on Liz, please.

I frankly don't remember your posts...but I remember a lot of Shelly's responses. A whole hell of a lot of them could be considered "abrasive" but...that's his style. He's really a pussycat...with tons of technical knowledge...and tons of people are asking for his help. He gets frustrated too. He has dumped on me a time or two also. We, subscribers to this forum, place a hell of a demand on him. He gets pretty snotty some times....but I guarantee you this.....he gets snotty with us all. He doesn't play favorites. And he seldom uses profanity!!!

Take my word for it (why?)...neither Shelly nor any moderator nor subscriber on this forum consider you stupid or "just a girl." I guarantee you (double your money back)that if you post on this forum with ANY problem, describe it in YOUR best possible terms giving all the information you can,....everyone here will bust their ass to get you the answer you deserve.

Well in the first place I was not aware until you mentioned it that you were a girl. In the second place I don't remember ever even answering you, let alone attacking you. You see, I answer hundreds of people every week here, and unless you have either been around a long time, been a troll, or impressed me with incredible brilliance, or incredible stupidity, your name just doesn't register in my memory. Since you fall into none of the above categories, I really don't know who the heck you are! I did however just look at your profile, and from your comment there, I can draw some conclusions.

Stay, or go, but don't blame your problems on me, I'm an engineer, not a pastor. Some of the people here I have been replying to for over five years, I've learned more about some of them from their posts than I know about my own family, and I like them and consider them friends. But if they say something I don't feel is right, they know I'll be along to present my opinion.

I'm older than dirt, as some here often point out, I stopped worrying about what people thought of me long ago, probably before you were born. My remaining time in this world is limited, so I'm afraid I really don't have the time to be worrying about your opinion either.

If you need my help I'm here, it's free.

Shelly

Good stuff Horatio, glad you got the number one slot with your reply.

I followed Shelly's lead and looked at her profile, seems to be not too interested in computers in the first place.

Sorry to see the young lady go but perhaps she needs slightly thicker skin as she passes through this wonderful world of ours. Both worlds, the real, big one, and PC911.

I get them everyday at Orchard. People come in there and begin a technical converstaion about house electrical circuits and refuse to provide any real information about their power panel, breakers or meter service from PG&E, and get angry when I try to get the information.

I can't recall any posts by this young person either and I'm on here everynight. I'll do a search to see what comes up...

Side issue.....If one gets their ass chewed on by Shelly, you wear it like a badge of honor.....I'm older than he is though.....

Hey, you old fart, that was damn well put. Of course, not unusual for you to be so, ah, eloquent may be the word. But, for the poor girl's sake, I must add that you've pissed me off a couple of times, too. Sometimes you mouth-off without fully understanding where the other guy/gal is coming from. But, who doesn't, and I accept you as you are and love the poop outta ya.

meekocmere - You sound like your feelings are hurt. Don't make a decision when you're in that frame of mind. There are so many different types of people here, it's like a town. Some are terrific and sweet and some are assholes. Just like the regular world! I don't know what Shelly said to make you feel this way, but judging by his post, it was unintentional. As for the stupid and just a girl part - well, I'm a girl and I don't know jack about computers. I figure if I hang out here long enough, I'll eventually catch on. Stick around. You're bound to make friends, get help and end up having a good time. I have.

If Shelly were to be the reason she leaves he will replace with two new ones....

Didya see the little chunky blonde he signed up last week? She doesn't even have a computer.......

I think she was the co-star on "Zena"...played "Gabriel"....

I've never seen the folks here say anything not "nice" to any of the geeky girls who post. As someone here once said to me..stick around..I'm glad I did

Liz,

Please post a link to any thread(s) where you feel Shelly attacked you. If you always post with the same identity, the only time I've seen Shelly even disagree with something you said was regarding Earthlink using Verizon phone lines. The provisioning of phone lines is a pretty well established practice so if Shelly was wrong someone can surely help you argue your case. If you feel he was rude or offensive, could you tell us why you feel that way?

Honestly, I don't think your anger is justified. Like the rest of us, Shelly can be abrasive at times; I just don't think he was with you. If you can prove me wrong, please post the link to the thread.

Is this, Earthlink was bad, the link or was there something else?

I'm not the first to say this, but I'm going to say it anyways.

First of all, no I don't know what. I don't see any threads in which Shelly "attacked" you. He HELPED you, not hurt you.

Second, if you're going to leave, don't blame your decision on someone else. Just because you don't feel like this is the place for you, it ain't Shelly's fault. He didn't tell you to leave, now did he?

Third, Shelly has provided me with so much information in the past that I can never thank him enough in the rest of life (and I'm only 17!). For example, he was the only one able to answer my power supply question.

Anyway, I'm just trying to say that if you want to leave, it's not Shelly's doing.

-Zack

Meekcocmere,
I have just read all the threads and am confused. I see no hostility towards you from Shelly and certainly no patronisation for you being 'stupid' or a 'girl'. From your posts it is obvious you are far from 'stupid'. Shelly even indulges in some banter and a smiley and you reply to one of his posts 'Thanks!'.

Shellys response to your questions is bang on and he even answers with humour which is more than a lot of us have got outta Shelly! ( apart from the absolute best advice!! )

Sounds like you got outta bed the wrong side - Get over it.
You may not get the advice you want in fluffy english BUT you will get the advice you want - Nuff said

I remember my father telling me about one of the US Presidents - it was either Lincoln or Truman, who always posted positive letters immediately, but if he was writing something negative, he'd leave it in his bottom drawer for a few days, and then send it if he still felt it to be warranted.

Maybe we could introduce a cooling off period before posts

A fine idea, but in this case cooling off from what? No one has been able to determine any basis for an "attack" or any indication that gender had anything to do with it.

It's clear to me that everyone hates to see a good member leave in anger, but it's even worse to see them leave in anger without cause.

Remember, this forum almost lost Shelly and Grogan a while back (and I wouldn't blame any of the other moderators for coming close, and maybe they have) until it became evident that the perceived hostility was a misperception or that any real hostility was far outweighed by the admiration and respect of the majority of members.

I think Shelly's response should be framed and kept on the wall somewhere. (http://www.pcnineoneone.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=45519&forum=computer&omm=4&viewmode=)

If I ask a question I hope to get a response. If I ask a really stupid question I expect to get some kind of response. Some are answerable some need research. Attack me all you want but it strikes me that if I ask that someone looks into it spending time to do so. Or giving up a bit of thier own brain cells. And let me check.... nope I ain't paid consulting fees or a service call to one of those in home repair places...or taken all the hardware boxed it up and delivered it to someone. Most probs I can handle on my own, sometimes you have brain lockup and the answer is right in front of you but frustration leads to blindness. Sometimes all ya need is a different perspective. Abrasivness even percieved can get rid of the layers of gunk your brain has to go thru to see the answer yourself.

I may not agree with opinions on subjects in here but most of the tech answers are dead on. If I don't want an opinion on say, "How's my hair look?" I won't ask, If I do ask and someone says ever used a comb... I should then not complain... ???

The most important quote of any lifetimes is but one word..

What is very interesting here is that, after 29+ responses, the author responds not.
It would seem to me that PC911 members/moderators are caring enough to post replies, and as always, try to find solutions to people's problems.
I'm at a loss, as to the reason for the original post...Shelly (among others), chastised me more than that for disliking modem twang; and I thank you for it.
This community is simply asking for you to explain, meekocmere.
Do so,

Yep..I agree. Looks to me like someone just wanted to throw a stone into the hive and see if us drones were still awake.

Shelly, abrasive? Not once you know him..but thats all been said.

You think Shelly's bad, have you met Grogan??
lol

One of the things that keeps me here is the fact that this forum manages to get those emotions out of me. Ive been to other forums and I have yet to find one on the entire web that is half as educational, entertaining and insightful as this one.

If these people didnt make me laugh, swear, or pout, what would be the point in even visiting? The place just reaks of personality.

Sure my pc runs great.. but PC911 is more than that.. it's about maturity. I grew up here, by being put in my place and by being told what others think. And when it got too hot in the kitchen for me and I wanted to leave.. some of the very people who I thought were out to squash my every word here came out and reminded me that part of being an adult is accepting one very basic principle; you wont like everyone and not everyone is going to like you. That doesnt mean you arent worthy or welcome.

When I got finished with puberty, one of the first things I had to learn was that if people didnt really give a crap about you, they wouldnt even take the time to give you stress. They would just keep walking the other way.

PC911 just reminded me of that and I am rather grateful, and its mainly the ones who irk me the most who come to mind first when trying to aim the kudo's.

So after approximately 3 years, I am still here with no intention of leaving: no matter who doesnt like me.

Which makes another good point: Im sure Shelly has come across virtually thousands of people who dont like him. One more couldnt possibly even be an issue Im sure. So dont think your going to shut him up by sticking out your lip and going to your corner..

And to Shelly.. personally, I can't put a price on what youve taught me here.. about pc's and about real life.

All I can say is Thank you.

I love this forum as well and while I'm a newbie here I'm a expert on another forum (different platform... I'll leave you to guess)..

I found myself and many others experts and lifers on our forum to be snooby and craby with newbies and regular users over the smallest things.

While some of it is understandable (you start to think it's your job to keep people in line). I will say that Knowledge is not an excuse for being rude. While I have not encountered any of Shelly's harsh remarks I will say that every forum as it's crabby expert and being self aware like I did... helped me become a better forum admin and better person in my life (job family etc).

Just something to keep in mind.

Shelly's abrasiveness gets a lot of mention in this forum but I don't think it's a well deserved reputation. Shelly teaches at the college level where a failure to be critical and direct with students is a disservice to them. He tries to make adjustments here, understanding that we have a broad range of abilities and maturity levels but his language style is pretty well set. He can be sarcastic, especially when the forum gets very busy but that isn't his usual style. Because he is at ease laughing at himself when people joke about his age and grumpiness, it is easy for forum members to start believing he is a grouch. I think it would be more accurate to say he has a language style that is precise and direct and that like the rest of us he can lose his temper from time to time.

The post that started this thread doesn't warrant responses that discuss Shelly's abrasiveness. This is a great example of why the court system does not allow second hand testimony when a better source exists. Anyone who searches our archives will see that one of two things has happened:
1. meekocmere posts under more than one identity and none of us has been able to locate the posts where Shelly attacks her for being stupid (or attacks her at all, or mentions he thinks she is a girl)...or....
2. Shelly made a statement of fact that for some reason made meekocmere feel stupid and her recall of the encounter was tainted.

The only way we'll know for sure is if she cares to post once more and clarify her point with more specifics. Remember, the best evidence is the text content of the actual posts, not the paraphrased interpretation someone might offer.

A third possibility is that her own personality sets her up for perceiving slights where none exist. Her posts and even subject lines are peppered with phraseology that supports this view. Some people are honestly intimidated by their newness to computers or their basic nature, but others use it as a "technique" to curry favor. The second type tends to flash anger when it doesn't work.

Shelly knows more about computers than anybody Ive ever come in contact with. He donates his time to this forum for FREE which means he obviously cares to help people out. His style is a direct approach which only allows him to answer more questions. Hes a master chef here. If you cant stand the heat. Stay out of the kitchen.

Liz,

I have just checked all of your posts. There is absolutely no indication that Shelly ever put anything in print that in my opinion could have offended you. Zero! Nada! Nor is there any indication in your previous posts that you felt insulted. Also, the reference to yourself as "a girl" doesn't necessarily gel.

What I would like to know is if someone else initiated this subject, by using your logon. Possibly an outside source. Perhaps someone within your household.

I hope you're physically and mentally doing well. And if you're able, to respond and set the record straight.

Training comes in many forms....."please don't do that"..."It's not nice to fool Mother nature"...."Didn't I tell you not to do that?"..."Just wait until your father gets home" and as time goes on..." golly gee judge, I didn't know I couldn't do that".... and sometime after you were supposed to have grown up, you appear before Shelly for your sentence.
We all learned in the service that corporal punishment was sometimes severe, and it was better than go on the record to Captain's mast.

I did a lot of corporal punishment and thank God there was a warrant officer who had reached full commander aboard that cared enough for his guys to keep me off the record.

Shelly was one like that, he showed me the way, and he didn't say please.........

I read all the posts on this issue.I am going to make a couple of observations.
If you had already made up your mind about not posting on this forum, why do you have to anounce it?Was there a particular reason-besides getting the other readers to join in the foray with their opinions-either for or against Shelly?
You became a member on this forum of your own freewill/I donot think there was an initiation fee(at least I was not asked for one)when and if you decide to leave.again that is your prerogative.
If you did not like Shelly's response to your questions, you could always private message him and communicate with him on one to one basis without involving others.
If you think your complaints about Shelly was to muster the "Get Shelly Out Brigade" then that does not sound like a productive contribution.
You can still be a visitor on this forum and learn/improve your computer knowledge just by reading the forums.
I hope common sense prevails and emotions become more balanced
But then what do I know?

That is certainly a possibility. However, my guess is that she has read all the responses to this thread and that she would have posted again if the opinions had gone the way she expected. Take a look at Bob's response (#42) to one of my comments for a reasonable hypothesis.

I chose to respond to this thread several times, not to provide helpful advice to meekocmere (she doesn't want any) or to defend Shelly (he doesn't need my defense) but to let everyone know that you can't post fantasies containing negative information on this forum without being challenged. One of the greatest things about our new technology which includes email, voicemail, news posting and chat is that a semi-permanent record exists of all exchanges and people are stuck with what they "REALLY" said instead of what they want people to believe they said. This bodes well for those who pride themselves on accuracy but it is hell for those who have a twisted or distored view of reality.

This is all a little unbelievable. This thread should have ended with Shelly's post number 4. Nothing meaningful has been added since then.

And I do consider Shelly my friend after the last, at least 5 years, picking his brain.

Posting back to the thread after all the above comments would just add another 100 or 200 comments but nothing new.

IMHO.

Dearest Ed,

It was never meekocmere's desire to obtain help. I have reviewed all her posts and believe these were her true motive:

In an attempt to obtain a guarantee of company, meekocmere christened her entrance to 911 by claiming to be continually plagued with nagging computer problems. She hoped to entice and lure a loyal little circle of problem solvers--her own private committee--in which she could be the center of attention and also participate by playing an integral role as a fellow problem solver. This would accomplish demonstrating her computer savvy in front of a captive audience garnering nods of approval from her newly formed circle of friends. I'm sure she hoped to emerge as one as intelligent, if not more so, than those she allured with her posts.

When it became clear to her that others possessed knowledge far beyond her reach and abilities, those with whom she could never compete and be on the same level with, she decided to play the gender card and chose to publicly discredit that which she secretly desired to be--it's classic Freudian behavior of the Oedipus variety.

I'm confident she has joined yet another forum in which her name may possibly even be Shelly. Since Al was has seen fit to provide an internal message system here, I wonder if threads of this nature may give rise to the creation of a counseling service, in which cries for emotional help and sympathy could be answered along with answers to ones computer questions. Now, if one could only pay utility bills and do their banking here.

I do things a little different than you do. I actually talk to the person and find out the situation. But you don't have the precious time to do that because you are too busy protecting us, from words, and analyzing these *cyber people* that you don't have a clue about.

Shelly handled it fine, without your help, as pointed out in the previous post. He covered all bases and made his final verdict as to his feelings, and that was great. He needs no one to *cover his back*, and hasn't since he came out of the womb.

The rest have been trying to justify why he handles things like he does, and he had already covered that. And then the others have talked to Miss Cleo too much, and have tried to analyze someone they have NO CLUE about.

Get your money back from Cleo, you failed. If you need to track down my addy and post it for everyone, just let me know and I will post it for you, so it is correct.

Subject closed, last post...so feel free to add another 100. I am going back to reading the forum, and getting on with real life. And people wonder why so many from the old WinMag days to the new PC911 days no longer, or make very infrequent posts.

IMHO, and you are also very welcome to your opinion, of which I disagree with.

It's called Off Topic, Ed, which this thread should have been titled, and which is obvious from the subject line anyway. If we all followed your guidelines, no one would ever post anything that wasn't a purely factual answer to a purely factual question, even trouble shooting a technical problem, as assumptions need to be made there as well.

I'm very sorry Ed. You see, when "crazygerman" asked me to be one of the moderators for this group, he told me that I should use my judgment and post wherever and however I felt it necessary to keep the group functioning well. I know it probably seems crazy to you but I concluded that I should interject my opinion from time to time. I probably should have checked with you to make sure the content of my opinion wasn't worthless before I posted in this instance but I obviously got carried away. I personally prefer stating why I disagree with a person to deleting threads or specific posts and Alex supports me in that policy.

If you want to take my position as moderator, you could send Alex an email with such a request. Tell him that you don't need me (as stated in your post) and he might evaluate my worth to the group, who knows? If telling him that you don't need me doesn't get me fired, you could do a forum search to discover what percentage of my posts are worthless; at this point, Alex actually thinks that I post good technical answers. If those two approaches don't work, you could provide him a link to all your brilliant contributions to the forum. Once he is made aware of your contributions, he might want to entrust you with moderator status and replace me (again, who knows?).

Take this pink ribbon off my eyes
I'm exposed
And it's no big surprise
Don't you think I know
Exactly where I stand
This world is forcing me
To hold your hand

'Cause I'm just a Troll, oh little ol' me
Well Don't let me out of your sight
Oh I'm just a Troll, all pretty and petite
So don't let me have any rights
Oh... I've had it up to here!

Expressing emotions like anger, disappointment, resentment, dissatisfaction, shock and surprise...IS healing.

It is to hate that is destructive...and it is the absence of emotional expression--the suppression of emotions that leads to hate and violence.

Peace is within. Look for it within yourself, not others. Happiness is a direction, not a place. There is no such thing as continual bliss.

Colored scarves, lotus positions and chanting are optional.

Hal, dear Soul Brother

i am so glad to see you are still posting here, your humanity shines through, you are such a breath of fresh air.

no-one needs any words of wisdom from me, i just think people need to step back more sometimes. The internet is a wonderful thing which has given us knowledge at our fingertips, but we are creatures who need to feel the wind of life rush over our skins too, so we don't lose sight of the beautiful chaos out there which is life.

If we can stay in touch with life, and feel it pulsing through our veins, then we will come into these cyber communities knowing that they are just a part of life, not life itself, so we will not take things so personally and emotionally.

Let us reach out to our near and dear ones, those we eat our meals with, see every day, whose laughter we hear, whose tears we see, and let us spend time with them and hold them close.

For life is like the dragonfly on the pond, flying it's bright colours for day or two, then gone.

Peace, love , understanding, hope, and tolerance.

Your friend,

Eddie.

I can't believe I read this entire post Can I get an hour of my life back now?}> No, I don't really have anything constructive to add, just throwing my 2 pesos into the wind. I'm intrigued how these posts really do take on a life of their own. I feel the love in this forum, don't you feel the love? C'mon! Group hug!

For whatever it's worth, I'm thankful to the moderators and other posters alike for what they contribute to make this forum worth being a part of. I'm very fortunate that I have a world class techie in my family, (that would be my nephew). Although he's only in his second year in college, he's worked with computers all his life and has been the Systems Administrator at both his work and at his highschool for the past 4 years as well as working for the local non-profit TV station. This kid really rocks and he knows his stuff, but he's also really busy with school, jobs and fishing. I know if I get in a real bind, I can count on him to help me out. A lot of times I don't want to bother him when he's really busy, so I research the web, and if I can't find an answer, I know I can rely on the collective knowledge of this forum. Sometimes I simply enjoy reading the posts here even if they aren't necessarily tech related. Information, and the occasional entertainment are the primary reasons I come here. Plus, there are a lot of awesome people here that are worth getting to know, and Shelly is one of many of them. I didn't know how to take some of the responses from some of the people when I first posted here, but I've adjusted, accepted, and moved on. Most importantly, I've learned, and I've learned, and I'm still learning.

If you start to feel too sensitive towards what you experience on your computer, perhaps it's time to step away for a while and see what the world outside has to offer, go fishing, hiking, skiing, or whatever it was you enjoyed before you even had a computer, and keep in touch with that part of your life. "Keep it real" is an expression that comes to mind. Computers are wonderful things, but like all things, you can get too much and too involved with them, and taking a break from them helps you to appreciate their place in your life... they shouldn't replace your life. Some people I know let this happen because they start to take their life on the computer too seriously and it consumes them and they lose touch with what's truly important in life. Don't sweat the petty!

Gid

If Meekocmere has been reading this thread, and you attribute devious motives to her, I would think off-hand she has been quite successful beyond the first few posts... having created something of a monster, as well as having generated a certain amount of strife and discord amongst some of the PC911 folks. If she, or he, really is the sort of person most everyone believes her to be, I am reasonably certain there would be a great deal of satisfaction derived from this whole thing on her part. I would hazard a guess that, rather than deserved retribution, she has been provided enjoyment for the most part. She has certainly received the validation of a great deal of time spent concerning her short post.

Arsonists love to watch the fires they have set.

Take care... Randell

I think everyone wrote off Miss Needkocmore or whatever her name was a long way back. If she's getting any jollies from this, then her situation is indeed a desperate one. She comes off quite pathetic overall.

We came in on defense originally like we always do when some troll attacks one of our moderators. We cannot forget, they all work for free and certainly cannot be expected to take much sh!t and abuse for their trouble. I think they get some satisfaction from the knowledge that we will always pounce on anyone who dares to mess with them.

Problem is, there are so many bright and interesting people here who display the most thoughtful insight into just about any subject that comes up that we just can't seem to shut up when we get hold of an interesting case to pick apart. Naturally we are not all going to agree but hopefully no damage was done.

Kind of boring talking about computer problems all the time.
I think you have all done a good job on this one; I certainly feel like I know a few of you better than I did before.

Oh.. I doubt she would get much satisfaction and enjoyment from my post. I wouldn't exactly call it another log on the fire... check my 3 posts on this thread and I suspect they wouldn't provide much of a blaze. And, as a matter of fact, that actually wasn't what I thought.
