"BMP,JPEG Conversion etc"

I am running WinXP Home on an Athlon 1700XP.I have Corel Printhouse Magic and Broderbund Printhouse V11 installed.
When I save a picture it is saved as a Corel Photo Shop Image in BMP format. It seems that even JPEG images are changed to BMP.!!!I recently installed the highly recommended IrfanView since I was told it could convert BMP to JPEG. I need help.
1 Is the same graphic file larger in BMP than in JPEG?
2 How do you convert BMP to JPEG in IrfanView?(If answer to 1 is yes)
Any comments regarding help with this will be appreciated in as non tech terms as possible. Thanks!

#1 BMP is larger than JPG(lossless vs. lossy compression, another story)
#2 Open the picture, click File > Save As and observe the options.

Yes. BMP is an uncompressed image format while JPEG is compressed.

>2 How do you convert BMP to JPEG in IrfanView?(If answer to 1 is yes)

Open the image in Irfanview then go to File->Save As. Choose the new file format from the "Save As Type" drop-down and then hit Save.

Hi Newbie...
I am a long-time CorelDraw user, but never used their Print House Magic product. In Draw there is an export option, usually an icon at the top. I can convert any file made in Corel to just about any file format, including Adobe, Word, Illustrator, TIF, JPEG, GIF, etc. I am not sure if Print House has it or not, but check it out. If it's there, try "export" instead of "Save As".

Many thanks for all your help. Now that you all made it so easy, I found I can do it in all three of the programs.PC 911 has never failed to help me.It's like having a tutor by my side and one never gets flamed for asking a dumb question.Believe me after looking at your answers,I am ashamed to think I had not found the answer for myself.I have prided myslf for not being afraid to click on anything to see what it does and can't believe I missed something like this.
Thanks again you guys and gals are great!

actually you can do all of the above in M$ Paint. at least you can in w2k. paint just does not give you the compression options for .jpeg that other progs do. it seems to save at the lowest file size.

please correct me if i am mistaken.
