"CDR/music,CDR/data,CDR/No designation, etc??"

CDRs prices are dropping like a rock.I am puzzled by the various designations. What are the differences and which are interchangable?
The last batch I bought had no specific designation just CDR and the speed.I used these to record music with no problem. Can someone enlighten me please.Thank you,

There shouldn't be any real difference as CD music is data (just happens that the data is arranged in such a way that a CD player can read it as music). Some manufacturers sell CDRs for more money by putting "For high-quality music" on the label. I've bought the expensive CDRs, the mid-priced branded CDRs, and the no-name by-the-hundred CDRs... my music/PC equipment have yet to tell the difference.

CDR media branded "for music" are priced high because a component of the price goes back to the RIAA as "royalties", although one wonders how much of it reaches the artists.

Also, I believe that you can't record music to a standard CDR in a stand-alone CD burner (but I could be wrong on that one)

The only difference between "Music" CD-R's and any other is the built in royalty that boosts the price. You can record anything to regular CD-R's

Recording on a PC is fine with any media but I think Paul is correct about stand-alone CD recorders being programmed to accept only CDR/CDRW AUDIO for recording purposes. They'll play any type as far as I know but your restricted to CDR/RW Audio for recording.

As Shelly said.
There is no physical difference between a "MUSIC" CDR/CDRW and a standard PC CDR/CDRW. The only difference you may ever see is in price, quality of manufacturer and length of CD. Quality of manufacturer is not dependant on price. Just cause MUSIC CDs cost more doesn't mean they are better.

'Consumer" stand-alone audio CD recorders require special blanks. There is no difference in quality or composition between "data" blanks and "music" blanks, except for a flag that indicates which one it is. It's likely that "music" blanks are optimized for recording at 1x, since anything you record "live" is by definition recorded at 1x (though some dual-drive systems allow track copying at higher speeds).'

'There are two classes of audio CD-R, consumer and professional. The units targeted at consumers require special audio blanks, and employ SCMS (Serial Copy Management System) to prevent making copies from a copy. The audio blanks used to be 4x to 5x the cost of computer CD-R blanks and only held 60 minutes of audio, but 74-minute "Consumer Audio" blanks are now available for moderately more than regular CD-R blanks.

The "professional" units use regular CD-R blanks and don't obey SCMS, and generally have a wider set of features and input/output connectors.'

Ok then... a stereo component CD Burner requires specific "Music" CDRs to be able to make copies...

And a computer CD burner does not at this time.

Gee wonder which one I'll keep....

Steve - thanks for clarifying that. I was pretty sure I'd heard it somewhere, but your post makes it all crystal clear.

Thanks to all.I don't understand some of the references but I am having no trouble copying my home CDs for use in my car.I am using inexpensive 700 mb 80 minute bulk cd-r.
I want to start making Cds with favorites from different CDs.I assume that I will have to load each song to my harddrive and then copy them to my Cd burner. Is this correct.?I have Nero and so far all is well.I am going to start saving some graphics soon so I'll be reviewing the instructions on Nero's site and the PC911"how tos" and may be back looking for help which is always forthcoming from you great guys and gals. Thanks again.

Yes, when you are compiling tracks from different CDs, the best thing to do is to rip each track onto your HD and burn from there.

Also, be sure you "normalise" the wav files, or else your volume levels from track to track will be all over the shop.
