"upgrade to XP Pro"

I tried to upgrade from win 98se to XP Pro, but when I tried the compatability system check the progress box reached DVD Movie Player then stopped with a blue screen fatal exception oe at 0028:0000027.
I tried run and find, to see if I could trace anything ???? no luck I did not know what to look for anyway. I also tried Microsoft but no luck again. Could someone help please as to what the oe means and how I can repair whatever the problem is. Is it wothwhile just installing anyway as it is doubtfull I will use DVD Movie Player.

Thank You for any help

Try removing whatever caused the crash, and reinstalling it after XP is loaded and set up.

HI.
Thank you Shelly for your prompt reply. I am totally knew to PCs and as I said in the query, the crash or oe was caused by dvd movie player, unfortunately I dont know where it is to delete it, consequently if I do delete it and go ahead with installing XP Pro where do I find it to install it again. I am trying not to be a bother however I have deleted things before and have had to get everything reinstalled again and it costs $80.00 each time. (yes I know, learn how to do it myselfe but everytime I read how to do it they all give different advice and I am now more confused than before) sorry to go off the track a bit. so back to the above dvd

Thank You
John Macklin

Have you ever done a scandisk? Click on My Computer then right click on the "C" drive. Go to properties. Click on that. Now there will be a tab at the top called tools. The first option is scandisk make sure and put checkmarks in everything (Sorry my memory gets dim I'm not using 98SE) then run it on the next reboot.

I find that if windows can't scan a drive there are most likely bad sectors. This should help. It might take a long time to run if you haven't done it in awhile.

Defragmenting the drive would be a good idea after you scandisk. Same place on C drive.

If there is no option for doing the scandisk on the next boot try doing it in safe mode. Let it try to fix whatever it wants.

Look in the control panel and then add/remove programs. Remove any DVD software. Might have to physcialy remove the cables from the drive or decoder card if it has one. If it has a decoder card then it will need to be removed from the slot. The drive itself shouldn't be causing a problem, just the software or decoder card.

I've run the upgrade advisor. It didn't crash. It just gave me information. That is why I advised they run scandisk. It does scan your drive. If it doesn't think something will install on XP it advises you of the fact. A crash is something else. Scandisk isn't going to hurt anything and if they are a newbie then getting into the computer is not an option for them. This was made obvious by their post. Sorry about the rant but I do think something is amiss on their HD. I've been there when nothing that scanned my HD "could" without crashing. Disk Cleanup, Virus Scan, Pest Patrol,Adaware the chkdisk (Windows2000) fixed my problem.

Correct, running the Upgrade Advisor from the Microsoft Windows XP web site or from the installation CD will tell you where possible conflicts are.

The best thing to do about the DVD player software is to unistall it, reboot, and try reinstalling it. If you are still having problems with it, then try checking with the DVD software's web site for an upgrade. Not all DVD software will work with XP.

It was recommended to me by the Upgrade Advisor to unistall my DVD software before I upgraded to XP, and then reinstall it. I did so, and have had trouble with it.

Maggie Thank you, yes I ran scan disk and defrag, in fact I do this every two weeks regardless.

Sheltonleslie. Thank you, I looked in add/remove and there is nothing to indicate anything relative to dvd movie player. As to decoder card and drive and removing them it is totally beyond me.

Maggie Once again thank you, I have run disk clean up, virus scan, system file checker, and they all indicate no problems.

JP Thank you, Unfortunately I do not know where dvd movie player is to enable me to remove it, further to my above searches I also tried run and find, I did discover files/folders relative to dvd (and other files) however nothing difinative as to actually dvd movie player. Hence I cannot remove it because I cannot find it.

Thank You to all who have replied I guess I will forget xp or pay the local pc shop $80,00 to install it. Much against my better judgment as they really are rip off merchants.

Have a nice and happy xmas
