Ok, Windows 2000 is a more business operating system. It was built off of the Windows NT kernel (os platform). It's intended more for the business environment rather than the home, average PC user. It will however work well for a PC user, but its not known to have the best support for gamers, thou I have never found any problems..

Windows ME (Milenium Edition) was built off of the Windows 98 platform, (and in my eyes was a big mistake). It was the alternative to windows 2000, and was released around the same time. Its much more like windows 98, and is supposed to be designed more for hte home user. It's known to be pretty glitchy, while some think its better than its predicessor Windows 98se, I think its junk and would never recommend anybody to use it.

Windows ME + Windows 2000 = Windows XP. Windows XP was actually built off of the WIndows 2000 opeating system (kernel), but inquired some of the benefits that windows98 and windowsME had. Windows XP is the best of both worlds.. its great for business, and its great for the casual or gamer pc user.

Hope that helps,
-Nick

When people are going to stop attributing this non-sense to BG, which has been known to be an urban legend for years?

I liked WinME, but Win2000 is much superior and I never had any probs playing games.
And it is very stable. XP was built from it.

Best Regards
Ian

heh, you're forgiven.. I love it when people correct me. I'll make a point to correct you . And yes I know that the quote isnt real, its been around for a long time and more represents how the computer world has changed.. Plenty of people in this forum have told me this, and every time I answer the same "I know". Maybe we should focus on helping people, rather than nitpicking . Just because I'm sick of pople correcting me on it, I will change it.

-Nick

p.s. Its changed now.. you happy? Oh and I fixed all my spelling errors just to please ya <wink>

I'd have to agree. Windows 2000 is a rock solid great opeating system. I think XP is better, but I'll never hesitate to use 2000 or recommend it to somebody.

81 Newbee,

There are scores of small differences and several big ones. Windows 2000 offers far better security, but in a home environment, that level of security is seldom needed and can seem too restrictive. Windows 2000 has a fundamentally different way of handling data in memory for working applications (compared to Win95/98/ME) which means an error in one running application will seldom crash the system (WinXP is similar to Win2000 in this regard) Since WinME targets the typical home (family) user or tries to, it has more emphasis on support for games and multimedia where Win2000 integrates better with business type applications.

One problem with WinME that is seldom mentioned is the lack of peer support in forums like this one. The type of users who have the expertise and willingness to troubleshoot software glitches jumped from Win98SE to WinXP or used WinME for a very brief time in the interim. The result is that WinME problems get posted and the responses are slow to show up or they don't get responded to at all because so few people are using it and those that are don't care to tweak and test to find solutions. In the case of Win2000, there are a lot of business users who have probably experienced problems similar to any you run into and they will respond to questions on that system.

If you have WinME right now and you don't push it in ways that cause you problems, don't be too anxious to switch. I suspect you would like either Win2000 or WinXP better but WinME is not as horrible as many would have you believe.

Win2K is NT based while ME is a failed attempt to improve Win98SE.

One is a step up and the other is a step backwards...

Steve Yandl's post is a more intelligent and meaningful answer than mine...

but, again, why let the truth get in the way of a good story....

I've found Windows Me to be a nice computer operating system. Of course, I don't fool around with it. I use my computer for different things, rather than play with my computer, so all of the socalled, horror stories about how bad Windows Me is, go over my head. I have noticed that most of the complaints about Windows Me are with the Windows 98 components, rather than with the things that have been added to Windows Me.

Were I to build another computer, I would use Windows XP Home, rather than Windows Me or Windows 2000 Professional. Windows XP has most of the features of Windows Me, and bids to stay around longer than Windows 2000.

Windows Me was thrown together rather hastily by microsoft because the OS code named Whistler, that was to be released finally as XP was running nearly two years behind schedule. MS spent nearly a decade to develop an NT based system that would combine a business successor to W2K (XP Pro), and a a home system (XP Home), with both systems based upon a common code structure, to replace W9X. They were overdue to release a new consumer OS, and W98SE sales were tapering off. Me was to fill the gap and boost sales through upgrades.
