"VCD Creation"

Hi,
im looking for some assistance in creating a VCD for playing on my home DVD player (which can play VCD's). I have a lot of .avi files from short video clips to long home made movies and also uni lecture videos e.t.c ranging in size up to about 300mb size.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a good VCD from .avi creation package (ideally freeware or shareware on download)?

I have a VCD from MPEG creator and also an .avi to MPEG converter but when i convert an .avi to MPEG and try and create a VCD from it it wont accept the MPEG as it doesnt fall within the standards. Ive downloaded some info on the "VCD Specs(Whitebook)" standards but dont really understand much in it.

If anyone could help me with this i would be most grateful

Merry Christmas to you all

I believe Nero has a plugin for the VCD format.

Download Tmpeg and load the avi/mpeg into the LOAD section. You will see a setting / load / save button section. Select LOAD and use the template selectio for VideoCD (NTSC).mcf

Convert it.

The videos now will be VCD standard. Nero and Adaptec both can burn VCD's (easily available in the wizard sections).

Post again if you need more help, I've been toying with it a lot lately myself.

Also, another valid concern is whether or not your DVD player can play CD-R recorded VCD's. We just bought a new DVD player because the old one couldn't read CDR material, but could read marketed VCD's.

Check out this site: http://www.vcdhelp.com/

They have some good tutorials for converting AVIs to VCDs and burning them to a CD-R.

On the subject of VCD, I am using ATI's Multimedia Centre 7.1 to download VHS tapes to hard disk and convert to MPEG -1 or -2 at the same time it downloads. One of the settings is VCD (MPEG-1) at 352 X 240. Another is DVD quality (MPEG-2) at 480 X 240 and; of course, the option for straight AVI download.

I have noticed all the options are xxx X 240 or half screen resolution. There are none for xxx X 480 or full screen resolution. I'm still experimenting with all this at this stage, but can any of you tell me whether the Tmpeg encoders or other similar programs will enable me to convert an avi file to a 640 X 480 full screen MPEG-2 file?

Thank you!

Tmpeg has a scalable resolution setting under the SETTINGS tab for Mpeg1 and Mpeg2.

I have an ATI also. I Tend to record in AVI2 format and convert afterwards to avoid frame loss at high res.

Thanks RB,
What resolution do these two settings allow?
ie: can the MPEG-2 produce 640 X 480?
