" Concerns on installing a new motherboard."
Fri Oct-24-03 06:38 PM by flying_postman

Hello everyone, this is the situation, my cousin toasted the motherboard of his PC via ESD and somewhere in the middle of next week I will be replacing it with a new mother board (it’s one of those integrated boards with EVERYTHING) and although I am comfortable with replacing drives, installing/configuring cards, PSUs etc. this will be the first time I will be doing such a procedure and I have a few concerns. My questions:-

1).Will I be required to reinstall my OS? 2) If I do have to reinstall my OS will it get rid of the original motherboard drivers? 3) Should I save the original CMOS settings of the original board? 4) Are there any possible error messages or issues may I expect? 5) I don’t have the drivers for the CD drive should I get them before attempting anything? Feel free to include any past experiences.
Any help would be appreciated.(sorry for rambling)

A new motherboard is a new ballgame. If you are running XP it will see the new board as adifferent computer, which it actually is, and will require a call to Microsoft for reactivation.

It is possible to migrate to the new board by deleting everything in Device manager before shutting down the old machine the last time, but that will be a problem if the old machine is dead. The smartest thing to do would be to wipe the drive clean and do a clean install of the OS and all the applications. Otherwise, you are just dragging all the old problems along into the new machine.

OK, thanks, I am really considering doing a clean install for a more smoother transition.
