"Internet Explorer is sooo slow"

I have ADSL service and yet my Internet Explorer takes up to 25 seconds to display a page. When it does load finally its "boom" the whole page. I went to DSLreports.com and tested my speed and my download speed was 1.5mbps while my upload was much slower but considered fast. I don't know why IE is such a dog lately. Is there a way to check or diagnose my issue. I am using IE 6 with 128bit encryption. I thought at first it was my firewall giving me a hard time, but it was still the same after I shut it down.
Anyone, anyon

Some M$ updates are dodgy when 1st released. Try deleting the ie6 update and rebooting and reinstall.

Have you checked for viruses?

Have you tried an IE repair?

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Microsoft Internet Explorer > Click on Add/Repair and then run Repair.

Also, have you followed KHT's recommendation above?

I had this same problem and my recollection is that if you
go to tools > internet options > connections > LAN Settings >
> automatic configuration and clear the automatic select boxes
and the proxy select box it will help.

Thanks everyone, but I am still batting a Big Fat 0.
I've tried all the suggestions and still the same thing.
25 second delay.
I know its not the connection cause my email is like fast as heck. And a few other applications that access the internet are downloading fast

Ok, I found a work around. I'm using Opera instead. And it hauls A**!
Though I am use to IE's interface, but at least I'm not slow.
But if anyone has a fix for IE, please throw it my way.

Try copying from an existing machine that has a known good copy IE6 reg key and merge into yours and see if that helps.

I'm still having the same issue. Opera is a little faster, but not much.
I thought it was in the beginnng, but it still takes a full 16 seconds to load my home page. Anything that requires an internet page is slow at loading. Like for example I use a weather program call Weatherbug that utilizes web pages for the info it gives me. It used to load so fast before upon boot up, now it's at a snails pace. I've tried doing an XP repair install thinking that maybe I installed some not so complient MS Updates, the only thing it did repair was once I go to a page it remembers to go back forth using the BACK & FORWARD buttons, where as before it would load the previous page like it was the first time(16 seconds). I checked my other computer that I have hooked up on my router and it goes in and of web pages fast and with out issue. I've tried SpyBot and nothing, didn't resolve anything. Someone out there has got to have some idea what I'm dealing with, hope you reply soon. I really don't want to do an entire re-install just because my browser is like creeping salt

If you open two instances of your browser, is the second as slow to connect as the first?

No, if it's the same site it opens at the same amount of time. I'm using Opera rite now at the moment and it displays how many seconds it takes to open. Thats why I always say about 16 seconds. IE-6 takes about 20 seconds, its a little slower.

OK, that's opposite of what I thought you were going to say.

Try this: Find your Hosts file - the one without an extension - then rename and relocate it or delete it. Perhaps it is corrupted. Reboot and it will be re-created. Try going to a site two times - the first time to connection will be slow but the subsequent should be fast if the problem was the Hosts file.

Jim.

I stand corrected. The 2 instances you were talking about:
the first was slow as usual, but the second popped up in the blink of an eye.

what about Zone Alarm settings, could that have a possible effect?
And if it does, wouldn't my browser go back to normal if I shut it down? Cause they don't.

At this point I doubt that it's ZoneAlarm. I suppose you could keep it from loading and see if it makes a difference - not just closing it.

I got these instruction from my ISP for a similar problem I had. So they may not apply to your situation but it's probably worth at least looking at. Keep in mind that our situations are entirely different. I'm on dialup AND the "cure" crashed my Win 98SE.

My issue was opening the first and sometimes second instance of IE to go to my homepage - no matter what site I set as the Homepage - there would be a lengthy daly and often it would time out. A second or subsequent instance of IE would load almost immediately.

Anyway, here's what the ISP suggested for Win98:

1. Click on "Start"
2. Click on "Control Panel"
3. Double click on the icon "Add/Remove Programs"
4. Click the "Windows Setup" Tab across the top.
5. Remove the check mark next to "Communications"
6. Restart the computer
7. Follow any on screen instructions.
8. Complete steps 1-4 again
9. Place a checkmark next to "Communications"
10. Restart Computer
11. Follow on screen instructions. (This is where you may need your Windows Disc.)
12. Restart Computer Again
13. Log on to the internet.

Your settings and locations with XP are probably quite different.

Here's an online version of the above: Page cannot be displayed

And a reference to XP: Removing XP components

Jim.

I have winXp and doesn't offer the same bells and whistles as you have on your 98 setup. Yeah I'm still in limbo here.

Just a thought, could I re-install IE-6 from scratch? Like download the latest version. Instead of the one that is my SP1-cd.
the thing is I can't find the browser anywhere to download.
MS just has the patch for 6.1 and not the whole browser program to save.

That 985kb is just a starter: it will check your system and then download further components as required. The whole lot, iirc, is about 65Mb.

A good portion, if not most, of IE is in the OS. It's impossible to tell how much disk space IE really uses since the source code isn't available. Opera is entirely self-contained, so there's no question how much space it uses.

I recommend you try out Mozilla Firebird and tweak it start rendering pages as soon as possible by setting nglayout.intialpaint.delay to 0 (you can do that by going to "about:config" and double-clicking on it).

Nice tweak, I hadn't noticed that setting in there. (there sure are an awful lot of them that can be actuated)

I changed mine to 0, from the default of 250 (I assume that's a delay in milliseconds, to give the browser a "smoother" feel) and I'm noticing a slight difference, particularly when it's just refreshing cached data. The whole page kind of snaps right into place, at once. You probably need a reasonably fast machine to notice any difference, and it's mostly just a cosmetic thing as you don't really notice being able to read the page a quarter of a second sooner in the best case

I'm kind of wacky when it comes to things not working right on my pc.
1, I'm not even sure that its a problem alone with IE. Just because Opera is running slow as well. I really do not want to setup another browser.
Someone earlier mentioned DNS as a problem but failed to explain his support. I'm wondering if he's on to something.
I'm not quite sure what he's referring to though. I've checked my DNS settings which are set at default settings for the type of setup I have. I have a basic setup: ADSL modem + Belkin Router/Switch + My PC's NIC. IP is setup on auto and DNS address is not used.

Also someone mentioned to me to check for Trojan's. So far none has been detected.

I don't know if it could have anything to do with DNS, but how about Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings. There's a setting in there to "automatically detect settings". It's a royal pain and it causes IE to delay, while it's looking for a proxy server on your network.

Hawk try this, this is the way mine is set up on Win98SE
go to regedit and change
For XP & 2K

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProv
ider

For 98, 98SE & ME

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\Service
Provider

On the right for ALL OS's change these entries: (ALL values are HEXIDECIMAL)

Class = 1
DnsPriority = 1
HostsPriority = 1
LocalPriority = 1
NetbtPriority = 1

To change the value right mouse click on the value and select modify and enter the values above once you have done all of them reboot to take effect and see how fast your pages load.

For 98 & ME they sHhould all look like:

01 00 00 00
After your finished reboot.

And then all of a sudden a radio promo of the Matrix Revolution starts playing through my speakers. I wasn't even in any internet browser. It was like a radio spot or something. You should first try a ping on one of the sites you are having trouble with (C:\ping www."site"."domain", e.g. C:\ping www.pcqanda.com) to see where the delay is, or C:\nslookup "IP address" e.g. C:\nslookup 66.216.96.214 (for pcqanda) to see if it resolves to "pcqanda.com".

This should confirm if the DNS server is 'borked'.

If it is or seems so you can specify another DNS server by going to Start> settings > Control Panel > Network and > right click your ethernet card > properties > select tcp/ip protocol > properties > then select use these DNS and the type in the dns numbers. click ok and you are away.

Unfortunately you will have to ask around for an alternative DNS server IP for your ISP or area (you can actually specify use of any DNS server), some here may be able to advise alternatives.

Take a look at this site for more tips and info (it is a UK site but should be good for the US generally): http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/dnsname.html

Well the ping test worked, but it still took it about 16 seconds to do it.
in milliseconds, roundtrip was a minimum 76 milliseconds and maximum 78 milliseconds. Does that seem right? Oh, I used www.pcqanda.com to do the ping.

Seems slightly slow, but nowhere near enough to account for the 16 secs delay.

Could you determine where the delay was, I mean did the ping pause for 16 secs before initializing, or somewhere during the process or after ??

Maybe you should do a 'traceroute' (C:\tracert www.pcqanda.com) and post the result.

My local IP address is 192.168.0.3
My subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
My Default gateway is 192.168.0.1
There are 4 computers on my LAN.

Come and get me. Oh wait, those addresses are not reachable on the public internet. Hahah, silly me. I thought I was posting personal info that would get me hacked

Seriously though, he's asking you this information, so you can verify that it is correct. It's more you that needs to know it, rather than him. He is also asking how many computers are on your LAN, to rule out the possibility of a bottlenecks and collisions. It's possibly to daisy chain hubs to one of the router's switched ports, so it's a valid question.

All that said, it could even be your router malfunctioning. Does it happen to all computers on the LAN, on all ports of the router?

Thanks Grogan for clearing that up.
There are only 2 computers on my LAN.
The other has no issues when it come to speed for the internet browser. I've also changed ports thinking it might be a defective port. Nope same result. And the router/switch is right next to my pc where as the other pc is on the otherside of the house.
Another thing I noticed is that everytime it goes to a web page it pauses 16 seconds on the dot and then BAM shows the entire page. But as soon as I get to a site and within it navigates normal from page to page. For example this forum, to get here took 16 seconds from google which is my home site (which also took 16 seconds to get to).
but once I'm inside the site I can post my letter, read other posts like normal.

There's a current Windows XP + NAV 2004 or NIS 2004 issue with slow browsing in IE. If anyone else running NAV 2004 on XP has been having a slowdown in IE, follow this work-around until Symantec gets it sorted out:

1. While logged as an Administrator, go to your virus definitions directory, usually c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\virusdefs\.
2. Change the security settings for the VirusDefs directory to give the entire USERS group full permissions on the virusdefs directory.
3. If there are a ton of 0-byte temp files with the name of ????NAV~.tmp in any of the sub-folders, delete them.

I found the temp files your talking about but in 2003 they look like this: tmp1B.tmp

There's about 15 of them and they are 0 bytes.
is this basically the same files your referring to in 2004?

No. It has something to do with Auto-Protect scanning in NAV 2004. People were finding 9,999 tmp files and had to keep going back in to delete them sporadically.

Yes I know. (see posts #47 and #49 ) I posted it in case it applies to anyone that finds your thread here or from a search engine while troubleshooting their own slow IE.

In the Taskmanager under processes, anything have an unusually high CPU usage? As jujet84 mentioned, try it without weatherbug. Try it without all other startup programs (incuding Auto-Protect) in the background and then add them in one a a time to at least rule them out.

Other than that, since your obviously not in the States, I'm not even going to make this into a insult war. But if you are ever in the states in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area definitly give me a shout, I'll definitly show you what being Jumped is all about. Punk!

Oh yeah, I do have permission to kick your a** if you are ever in my neck the woods and mean that in a good way.

Nah, but you know what! You need to learn a little respect. And learn how to control your attitude.
Your deviating off the subject at hand.
So instead of throwing insults and whatever at me why don't you use that animosity to help me resolve this browser issue.

Hey, just what is your problem? As I see it, you are the one being an ass here. If he doesn't want your help, that's fine... it doesn't give you the go ahead to start attacking him.

Now, you condescending, small minded prick, if his network problem is so simple, why isn't it solved by him verifying his settings? Please enlighten us with your finality of wisdom some more.

Thanks Grogan! for the added support.
I didn't set out to start anything on this forum other than a resolve for this nagging browser issue.
And just for the record when someone says "when they get home from work and school" in that order, usually means they are grown-up. Many adults today, do continuing education after work. Especially one's that have been thru 9 Presidents.

Ok, I've shut all the resources that access the internet upon boot up and still got the same issue.
Checked Task Manager and nothing was putting a drain on the system.

I can see absolutely no reason for Flybywyre's disgusting outburst (post #67) nor why he would be allowed to continue posting !!

On to more pressing matters:

The only thing I can think of now is perhaps refreshing / repairing the following files:

- regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
- regsvr32 Shell32.dll
- regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
- regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
- regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
- regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Confesses to grasping at straws !!

Vijay was referring to DNS which is the Domain Name Servers which converts the domain name (e.g. www.pcqanda.com) to its IP address (66.216.96.214) which computers recognise. It is usual for your network to have alternative DNS servers specified in case one is borked (in your case if the DNS fe80::54ff:fe55:4e01%5
specified is bust you get no, or at best, poor response).

Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea where you can obtain alternative DNS IP addresses !!

Check your daughters PC settings to see if it specifies alternatives.

Well I sure don't understand the second IP Address that's listed, the fe80 ... Unless that has something to do with the tunneling - which I also do not understand.

Maybe try an IPCONFIG /RELEASE and then IPCONFIG /RENEW. If that doesn't do anything, go into your router setup & Restart rounter.

"Sometimes it may be necessary to Restart or Reboot the router if it begins working improperly. Restartting or Rebooting the Router will not delete any of your configuration settings. Click the "Restart Router" button below to Restart the Router."

(Note, restart, not restore).

Thanks THERUBE, your suggestion didn't work, but still thanks.
I hate to admit defeat, but I think I'm going to have to do a re-install tomorrow of XPpro. I just don't think anything is wrong with my router/switch nor my DSL. My e-mails and downloads are still very fast, its just the browsers. My other computers in the house browsers haul while mine is just doggin' it. Time to start backing stuff up.
I'll let you all know if that is the final fix.

I like mozilla based browsers best now, but that's not really really factual. That sort of problem could be with Internet Explorer, it's easily broken and especially when spyware/toolbar crap gets insinuated in there but it's not normally "slow".

I doubt that's the case here, anyway. It's a long, convoluted thread and things are easily missed, but he's having the same problem with Opera as well.

Hmm...well it seems the DNS issue is a non starter....sorry for the diversion guys !!

So we have two PC's through a router, only the one has the slowness issue (so rule out ISP fault), it has the issue with all browsers (so not IE settings then ??), swapping router ports is no solution (so rule out router fault ?), that leaves us with some setting on this one PC and the way it either talks to the router or the WAN.

From here I'd be checking /refreshing Network settings and looking into conflicts with other software. Is there any HD activity during this 16 secs lag. Are any unknown items starting up either at boot or when requesting web pages ? Messenger springs to mind.

You also say other apps which access the net work OK ? Do you mean you are not aware of any delay / lag / slowness or there definitely is no delay ?

I'm afraid as I am not an XP user I will have to back out here, but I hope my precis clears the situation for others to nip in with ideas.

Well good morning to you too!
I'm the one with the issue. I think I'm the one that needs to be alittle sensative. And even though know one from here would hack in, I think Grogan said it best, "That I should know what they are".

For the most part this forum is great. But there are a few of you who shoot in a reply/answer without giving why, reason or how to resolve. For example: "give me your IP address and social security number" well maybe not that bad. But enuff for me to say; "WHY?"...........
I'm just asking for a little help, not a bashing.
If you want to be a jerk, jerk somewhere else.

Ok, other than that, I'm still waiting to hear some legitimate input and not Dumb Responses.

Actually, I do use Weatherbug upon bootup which also access the internet and seems to have the same delay issue. Though on the flip side I use AOL instant messanger(just Instant Messenger, my ISP is not AOL) and it does not have a delay issue. Other apps that access the internet like driver updates download fine and show there speed as being pretty fast.
I definitly feel it some kind of setting, but where I don't know. The exact 16 sec delay kind of gives this away. If it were fluctuating then I would say it was matter of bandwidth. It's too consistant.
I can't believe I'm the first to have this issue. Hate being first sometimes.
