"Sharing a drive"

I have an external Hard drive Seagate 160 GIG. I have it on my home machine running XP PRO and I have partitioned it into 4 logical drives. I have allowed sharing of the J drive. I can see the drive on my Laptop which is running XP Home which is another part of the house connected via a router running cat 5 cables.

I Get the following error when trying to access the J drive from my laptop when I try to access J

\\Computer-room\Comp_room J is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resources. Contact the Administrator of the server to find out if you have access Permissions

Not enough server storage is available to process this command.
Any Help in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I have other drives and folders on my Internal hard drive as shared and my laptop has not problem with those drives or folders.

Go into the sharing and security tab on J$ and if it has $ sign then choose add a share(bottom of the box) and name it whatever J is OK. Now you will have to point the other computers to it. You can only get to J$ through the address or run box from an administrative rights and also an account(administrator) that has been added to the machine by disabling simple filesharing. First option is simpler.

I have the Share this folder on network checked under the sharing tab and I have allowed all users which is only me checked.

The laptop sees the drive but does not allow access to it. I do not understand the dollar ($) sign I do not see that any place under properties I only see the name I gave to it and the letter j in parentheses (J)

Would have been an easy fix. Don't touch the machine that the drive is on. Then choose the tab to add a network place and browse to that folder. Don't type it in there. Choose another network location then>next>browse>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>machine name>J See if that one works and if it does then delete the old share in My Network Places. If you don't do the browsing then Windows will tell you it is already there or something like that. It happened to me years ago so I can't remember.
If that doesn't work then start playing with share and unshare on that drive. It is probably some stupid glitch during a boot up. Heck rebooting both computers might get it working also.

Maggie I tried all the above that you indicated re-booted numerous times. Shared unshared numerous times notheing seems to have worked. I am wondering if it has to do with fact it an external drive hooked up via a USB 2.0

Maggie

I cannot share any of my logical drives on the USB Exteranl drive.

I can share all my logical drives that I have formated on my internal drive with no problem.

I am 99.9% sure now it has to do with the fact that it is an external drive hooked up via a USB Port and it has to with this part of the Statement I get when trying to access the drive.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command

My external drive is USB and I share it over my network. Maybe it is a permission problem or your firewall. I was sure it was showing the $. Go farther into the share and see what it lists. Also if you have added the profile for the other computer into the share. Gpedit.msc you can add the "Everyone". Listen to the people squawk about that one.

Do you have Norton AV. Does your event log show an ID# 2011.

GOOGLE GROUPS not enough server storage is available to process this

SYMPTOMS: When accessing shares on a server from a client, you may receive
"Not enough server storage is available to process this command." error. You
may receive this message and Event ID: 2011 after you install Norton
Antivirus for Windows.

Resolution:
1) The registry value IRPstackSize may be not explicitly present. To
increase the value of the parameter, go to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
LanmanServer\Parameters. If the key is not present, choose Add Value in the
Registry Editor. The Value Name should be IRPStackSize and the Data Type is
REG_DWORD.
2) Remove any unnecessary entries from this value in the registry,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
\NullSessionPipes.
3) If the machine has a non-zero PagedPoolSize in the Registry, you need to
re-set it by going to
HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management and double-click on PagedPoolSize and set to 0.
4) Disable Norton antivirus to see if that will fix the problem.

I remember seeing that for some reason I thought it was only for mapped drives or I would have googled that error. Live and learn. Didn't think of Norton.

I hyave tried everything suggested I even took Norton AV offmy laptop no luck. I went to sahe mode on my home machine and under security tab on XP Pro I made sure all users was allowed, So short of clean install on my laptop I will live with it. I just transfered the files I would need access to another drive that worked under share.

Thanks for all the help

I have a question. That J drive is it a partition on the USB drive? If it is maybe you have to change the share in the whole drive. I really need my external drive, I use it to back up my whole network. I share the whole thing.

As an aside, I never thought to ask, do you have anything else shared and a working network? Can you ping the other computer either way? Maybe one of these will point you in the right direction.

I also can access folders from my machine in the computer room. Example my internal drive is C D E F G. I share C and G and I have no problem accessing my SHared files on C and I have no problems accessing G from my laptop.

I have never had a problem accessing my files on the laptop from the computer in the living room

To make the previous reply sweet and short . I can share dives/folders on my Internal drive with my laptop

It is only my External drive I can not share the drive/folders.

I was wondering what if I deleted the MSHOME Work Group and create a new work group.

Question how do you delete a work group?

I got to work and a fellow employee told me he had the same problem once and he created another user with administrative rights and everything worked. Another person said sign in as a guest user and see if it works. I will try these things when I get home from work

I have tried everything suggested searched various boards even did a clean install on Laptop. The problem did not get any better infact it got worse. The laptop can longer access any of my drives on the machine in the computer room. The laptop sees the folder but acess is denir=ed as stated in the original post of this problem. I am going to have to live with it. I cannot afford to lose any more hair and voice sore from screaming.
