That's a software issue. Try reinstalling the scanner software.

Hi Shelly. I suspected as much. When I went to XP my 3450 was not supported for XP by UMax.Since I had only had the scanner for a couple of months I went to their tech support and asked for help.At first I got "stock" replies but little help.I then went to UMax sales site and searched around and finally got a persons name.I gave him my tale of woe and mentioned that as a member of forums and Senior Net I was disappointed and that they should have notified at least Senior Net that the scanner they were still marketing long after XPs release was not supported for it.I suggested I would be sure to post the imfo whereever I could. He said there was a way to make all the options work and set up a time at my convience to walk me through the process. IT Worked.I no longer am able to find the site or the person.I will keep trying. Thanks for the reply !
I just revisited the UMax site and they show the 3450 supported for XP.I will contact them for a new download.!!!!!

Umax has long been one of the worst company's for driver support. I have owned their scanners, but never again.

I like Microtek. Canon and HP also make good scanners.

Good News Update. With nothing to lose I sent an Email to Umax tech support yesterday .Today I received a reply suggesting an easy fix.
IT worked and I am back in business .I thought it was fair to post this since they responded so rapidly with a fix

Sorry about that Rube I just didn't think any one else would care.I should have thought otherwise considering the size of PCQ&A.I promise not to do it again. Here's the simple solution:

Click the Advanced Mode tab, then uncheck the Auto Adjust button and the image should reappear. If not, preview again

It did the job
