Sun Apr-17-05 01:42 AM by 81 Newbee

Friend running WinXP Home uses attworldnet.net gets a 797 error when he tries to log on.It says the site modem is not available./or port is already in use .further effort tells him to shut down Windows and restart.Nothing helps.I can't see his machine and he is even less savey than I(That's bad).Any ideas as to what may be blocking his sign on gang??I googled and get some of the same words he got
He just called and said he tried to send an Email using outlook and got "??? (Not remembered )could not be found.0x800ccc0D.he claims everything was fine yesterday and this just started today when he tried to log on to Attworldnet.

Have him download and install the latest XP driver for his modem. The problem is casused by a wrong or corrupted driver.

The modem undoubtedly came with an XP driver, he could reinstall that and then update it if necessary, or he could download the driver on another computer. It will easily fit on a floppy disk

Hi Rube and Shelly,He has an internal modem in a Dell which was purchased about2001.Control panel shows "Dell Data Fax modem".It came with Win98 and was updated to Win XP Home about a year ago.He is on automatic update for Xp and recently recieved 3 new ones.He does not know if the problem came up after them .He believes Email was OK after they installed.Com Diagnostics shows:
Modem NONE Yes it shows "NONE"
Dun/ras Version5.1 2600.2180
TCP/IPProtocal Installed and selected
DNS Servers Obtain DNS server addresses automatically
Tried installing modem using the setting 5600 generic hoping it would find modem. No dice!
I had him try installing new hardware but the system did not find the modem.Had him check for the disk that came with the computer. He found it unopened. One of the items on it was "test modem".When trying to open that system said Info is " notAvailable"Whie the disk listing shows it should be.
Had him call ATT tech services. They walked him through trying to open the modem No luck
Tried reopening his accout with ATT with their walk trhough .Did not work.I plan on visiting him this week to try to help.I have a spare56k modem. Is Dell too fussy to take one ?Any other thoughts from you two on what esle can be done. One other bit of imformation he used to get his mail on his ATT home page but lately Outlook Express comes up and then switches to his ATT page.OE comes up now but no connection to the net.I now have even greater respect and ENVY of the knowledge you and others in this forum have. The guy loves and fears his computer I hope we(meanig you of course) can help him.!!!!

You can replace the modem, of course, but it may just need the present modem to be reseated in the PCI slot. No matter whuch way you go, it will need a correct driver installed.

His Dell will have a Tag Number label stuck onto it on the side or the rear. With that number you can go to the Dell Website and download the current driver for that installed modem. The Tag Number will tell support exactly what accessories were shipped with that machine.

Thanks Shelly.I hope to be able to get to his place soon.He refuses to remove the case on his machine to check if the modem is "seated"or to check the ID.
I should have thought of that as I had had that problem with my video card which worked again after I reseated it.I will try it when i get there(Hoping for an easy fix)Any idea as to what he may have done to cause Outlook Express to start opening his mail?Worked OK but looks like an extra step when he opens his email in going to ATT.

Went to Dell site and did not find his modem listed. They would not let me ask questions without an identity # from his machine. He was not home when I called and could not get the needed ID.The modem on his machine isPT 76EPH.The oldest one they show is starts with 79.I will try to contact him tomorrow .In the meantime does the modem # look OK to anyone with a Dell from the 2001 timeframe?

Finally got through to the Dell help line to someone who would chat with me.They found the up grade for the modem my friend has(No longer on their list for upgrades on their site)I was able to download it then on to a floppy.(Small file). The guy on the desk agreed to give it to me with a little coaxing. He almost made me feel like I was stealing a secret code of real value. He firmly refused unless I provided proof of the machine ownership at first but was reasonable after I explained my role.A plus for the Dell tech chat service in my opinion !!

I will be going to my friends home Friday PM.I have downloaded drivers for my scanner printers and for MY modem .This has always been real time on my computer with the components recognised and present on my system.
Now I will be trying to load drivers from a floppy disk on a machine that does NOT recognise the Modem that the drivers are for.
What can I expect and are there tips or help you can provide to help me be successful?.All help appreciated.

You can go into Device manage and delete any listing for a modem you find there. This will force Windows to redetect the modem as new hardware when you reboot. Instead of allowing Windows to select a driver for the modem, click on Have Disk, and refer it to the disk you have the correct driver on. Click OK and the driver should properly install.

DUNS ERROR 797

797 - The modem could not be found.

This error occurs only in Windows 2000 and XP. The error can occur if the modem is no longer visible to the system, and may be a problem related to the modem driver, or system conflicts that cause the modem to work only some of the time.

In some cases, rebooting the machine may "solve" the problem.

If the modem is an external and is not powered on when the system is booted this error may occur: shut-down, power on the modem & re-boot the system.

If the error persists, check to see if there is an updated driver for your modem.
