"Video card upgrade question"

I ordered a Radeon 7500. When the time comes to remove my Voodoo3 2000, is setting the resolution/color down to the lowest and uninstalling 3dfx tools enough? Or should I go to safe mode, uninstall 3dfx tools and remove the card from device manager?

Best to do as much as you can to remove all remnents of the Voodoo3. If it was me, I would likely be reformatting my HDD.

Tsk tsk tsk Mark, now that's usually not like you.

Myk, Go into Change the Display adapter to Standard VGA. Do not rebbot yet. Now remove all you 3DFX tools and Drivers using Add\Remove Programs. Shutdown your Computer. Remove the Voodoo. Install the Radeon. Reboot . When Window says " Display Adapter setings incorrect Blah Blah blah " just say " Shut the F*** up".... ooops sory, that's not a choice ( Although it should be ). Just cancel everything. Don't choose to install any drivers with hardware wizard.

Aftre Windows has stopped pouting, Grab your ATI Disc and install drivers and Multimedia with that. Reboot and you're done. Happy Holidays .

Yes, it is! If I change any hardware, I reformat! I'd rather spend an extra few hours with a "planned" clean install than lose data with an "unplanned" clean install.

Geeeeeeeze!! if i reformatted every time i changed a piece of hardware i'd NEVER get a system runnin' the way i want it to. Seems like reformatting every time you change anything is just taking a shotgun aproach.

Aaaahhh ... thought you were taking a tongue in cheek swipe at 3DFX... didn't you have trouble with that V5?

Now I see that you're just into S&M

Actually, I didn't have too many problems with my V5 except the vector flashes in NHL 2001 after I switched from Intel/Intel to AMD/VIA.

I was able to pick up another V5 very cheaply and I plan to see what it can do matched up with my P4.

As for reformatting... I think I have done it 3 times in the last month. The 3rd time was unplanned after I installed Adaptec's Easy CD Creator Platinum. Safe mode didn't work. System restore didn't work. A reformat did though! LOL!

LOL! That's the point. Website updates have suffered for one. I do, however, have it down to an art form and I am usually up and running again in a few hours. Fortunately, I run a pretty clean system and don't have hundreds of software titles to reinstall. I back up my Quicken files to another partition each time I use it and to a zip disk once or twice a week. These files are easily to most important part of my computer.

Thanks.
You never know, some people like to reformat. I didn't even question why my nephew reformatted his 5 month old homebuilt already.

Mark, does have a point although reformatting can be a pain. When I upgraded from Voodoo 2 to 3 to 5 had problems with registry remains, which caused me no end of grief, even until the day I changed my Computer.

There is a 3dfx uninstall utility, which I used to use. Pretty good. Go to www.x3dfx.com and perhaps you can find the link here

Another reason i stick with nVidia, never have had any trouble changing an nVidia card out. There have been 4 or 5 different ones on this machine alone, ranging from a TnT M64 to the current geForce 3.

I have also found that re-formats are less frequent when using WindowsXP, as compared to the days of Windows9x. I've been running XP for about a year now and I rarely need a re-format (except when changing beta builds), even with hard-core overclocking. And with the final version of XP, I have yet to even see a BSOD.

I use 2K Pro, and havn't seen a BSOD yet,and haven't done a format either, it's been running for well over a year now. The jury is still out for me on XP. I'll play with it awhile longer before i make up my mind.

Only a year and you consider it rarely?!!!? Once I got my Compaq running right I didn't reformat and only reinstalled a backup once when I tried the IE after 5.0.

I guess I'd rather poke around in the registry cleaning for an hour than to reformat/reinstall/lose settings for twelve hours. I don't have problems with 98 and on this computer I don't reboot unless I want to.

Changed from a Diamond Fusion (Banshee) to a VooDoo3 3000 to a Voodoo5 5500. Never a lick of problems. 'Course I followed the MFG's recommendations to the letter... that helps a ton !!

I've heard of problems putting in Voodoo's and having to clear out the registry of the previous card/chip. I didn't do that on my Compaq and didn't have any problems. I didn't even uninstall the onboard chip's drivers for a long time, which I only did to free up some space.

I can agree that reformatting and a clean install would be the best thing, but it's kind of like using a sledge hammer to drive a finishing nail. If there is an unfixable problem caused by the change reformat would be called for.

To me the reason for computers is to keep data, not to spend time replacing it.

Actually I wasn't talking about BSODs and computer lockups. If you play different types of games you can have problems brought on by the conflicts.
