x( I just bought a new Antech SX1240 case with a 400watt power supply, and moved all my old hardware and whatnot over. Now everytime that I shutdown, Win2K says that "It is now safe to shut you computer down" or whatever.
Now, I know that this is a remenant of the old AT style power supplies, since the OS at that time could not shut off the machine. I also know that this is an ATX power supply.
So what gives?! how do i get Win2K to recognize that I have an ATX power supply?
It'an incompatablity problem with the mainboard. A bios update might fix the problem but you will need to reinstall windows also. The install used a APM instead of ACPI HAL. What type on mainboard? Look at the manufactors site to see if they have any info.
This is an ACPI issue, however, I'm not quite sure why just switching the PS out would affect this? Usually, the motherboard isn't ACPI compliant or ACPI is not installed for this to happen (in my experience anyway). In device manager you should see "IRQ holder for PCI steering" sharing IRQ's with other devices. To see if ACPI is enabled, go to Device Manager/System Devices/PCI Bus/Settings (I'm not on a W2k machine right now but I think it's the same). Is it enabled?
ok, I guess i should be more clear. I have had Win2k installed for over two years (not including various re-installs for whatever reason). My system board is an Asus A7A266-M and is on the HCL, everything in my computer is on the HCL. I never had this problem before, and only occured AFTER i changed case/power supply.
This is definitely an ACPI issue. However, it's not a problem. I run my rig with ACPI disabled, so I have to physically turn off my computer also. You're going to have to re-install W2K if this bothers you. If you don't mind, then leave it alone.

Do you possibly have Fast Shutdown disabled?
From Q196008...
---------- "This problem can occur if your computer uses Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and the Fast Shutdown feature is disabled." ----------- Click Here

Edit: Sorry, that's for W98.
What about this, I've seen a SoftOff feature that is switched off and on by holding the Power button down for like 4 seconds on some systems. Do you have that feature?
I found this... ----------- Antec ATX12V / 2.03 Power Supply User's Manual
The power supply comes with a main switch. Make sure you turn the switch to ON position before you boot up your computer for the first time. Do not turn the switch to OFF position since the power supply is equipped with soft on/off feature which turns you computer on and off through the soft switch on your computer case. You may need to turn the switch to OFF position occasionally if your computer crashes and you cannot shut down the computer through the soft switch. ----------- Try this to humor me. When you get your computer shut down, turn off the power switch (rocker switch ?) on the rear and leave it off for a while. When ready to restart, be sure to turn on the rear switch first as it says above and then go through a startup and shutdown to see if windows will shut the computer all the way down as it should.
Here's something to try, don't know if it will work, but hey, it's worth a shot. Go to Device Manager, View, Show Hidden Files. Uninstall TPkd, it should be listed in Non Plug and Play Devices. It might work, might not. Good luck.
well after spending 4 hours tryin to cut holes in that flippin thing (went through 3 hole saws, 4 Rotozip bits, and four Dremel bits), the 20gig hdd crapped out on me. so after a refresh it works great. jesus!!!

Can anyone answer why it is necessary to modify a brand new case for more fans or circulation???And why AMD, knowing they have a temp problem does not include the proper fan and heat sink with their chips?
This old pentium 2 333 works ok when the cable is working like it is supposed to but I can and would get a better system if and when someone builds something that does not have to be modified on purchase.
And why they cannot standardized the plug ins from the power supply. I mean how long did it take to go from the 2 prong wall plugs to the 3 prong grounded and the 2 prongs will still work. It is only the 3 prongs which will not work unless you get a adapter. I have a perfectly good case with a 400 watt power supply but a P4 needs a special adapter and I understand the XP does also.
I guess I had better get first thing first, like getting my email to working. The cable seems to be alive today anyway.
