This is the second thread you have started on the same question. Please try to keep to the same thread so people can follow the discussion. Posting to a thread will move it to the top of the forum.

I asked in the other thread why you are using a screen saver. They serve no purpose and may be causing your computer to overheat if your cooling is not adequate.

What temperature is your CPU running at? What is the wattage of your power supply? What video card are you using? How much memory do you have and what type? What heatsink/fan are you using?

We need to know the answers to these questions to arrive at an answer to your problem. Reply to this thread.

Shelly....sorry but thank you..i am getting freaked since I just reinstalled!!!!

here are the answers to your questions...

100-105 F for CPU temp, with a valcano 5 fan and 1 case fan.

I am using an EVGA mx400 geforce 2, 64MB

I am using 256 mgs of pc 133 memory, my board accepts either sdram or ddr so I am using my sdram for now. (you think its the memory, hmmm)

It crashed often...way to often and alot more then it ever did for the month I ran it on my other machine. I hope this helps and THANK YOU!!!

Did you do a clean install or did you just transfer your hard drive.

clean install. I reformated and reinstalled. I originally tried to just put my HD from my old PC to my new but that was a NO GO! So, yes it was a total fresh install!

You didn't post the wattage of your power supply. That is a prime candidate if it is under 350 watts. The XP1600 draws a lot more power than your old PIII. I would prefer to see a 400 watt AMD approved supply like the Antec PP403X for that setup.

its a brand new 300, thats not enough? Do you think that causes the freezing? If you do I should consider a new one but it seems like a video issue...maybe memory..I dont know...

I guess thats a consideration....

hmmmmm, still thniking....

thanks Shelly

The reason AMD started approving power supplies, is that Athlon CPU's are a lot more fussy about voltage regulation than Intel chips. If you go to the AMD site and look up approved suplies for that CPU, you will see that most, if not all, are above 300 watts. your Video card also has higher power demands than most.

Update...

I have swapped a few parts to trouble shoot....

I tried different memory, micron 512 MB....still froze.

I tried my olf Viper II video card 32 MB...still froze.

I tried removing my TV Tuner card which I thought was the prob, still froze.

I am at a loss..

I have a 300 watt PS, shouldnt that do it? And does this sound like a power management issue, could it be that the machine freezes often because of a "junk" PS?

Why dont you go to the AMD site and check if your PS is sufficient for your mobo.

Guns don't kill people. Husbands who come home early kill people.

ok...

I checked out AMDs site and it ends up my PS is NOT approved. Do you all really think this is the problem? I mean it froze up when I was just surfing.....or on boot up a few times...I guess I never really new the importance of PS being that I always used intel. Also this morning I took out my old 250 from my intel machine that came in my Enlight 7237 case to fine its alot heavier then my new 300 PS that came in my newer case. So...do you all think the PS is it, before I go out and spend 50 bucks?????

Thanks...really..i appreciate it!

AMD is the same as Intel (which I use). You need a propper power supply to run these new puppies. Do as others above have suggested, get a PWS approved for your Mobo and CPU and don't skimp. I'm running a 300W Pcandpowercooling PWS and when I upgrade to a P4, going to have to go to a new case and 400W PWS. DON'T SKIMP.

I think Sonny meant to say something like:

"erm... take a screwdriver and open your case. Now look at the label on your PS and it should list the brand and wattage right there."

You won't get a decent PS for $50. Plan on about $100. CompUSA carries the Antec 400 watt supply I mentioned above for $99.95, It has a thermostatically controlled fan that changes speed according to temperature.
