"Zone Alarm driving me NUTS! (recommendation for anti-virus s/w?)"

I have just about had it with Zone Alarm Pro. I've been in touch with them several times for doing a clean uninstall, then reinstalling their update so that it doesn't screw up my computer.

One problem is that all of my ZA preferences, which I formulated over a long period of time, are completely gone. : (

Once again I did the clean uninstall last night, reinstalled it (according to their directions) and it seemed like everything was fine, but my computer is crashing again (screens freezing, everything taking FOREVER to load, having to reboot).

I'll take another look at your links, but can you tell me which anti-virus software programs you recommend? I am due to renew ZA in November, but I'm at the point where I'm ready to give it the old heave-ho. Right now it just isn't worth it. BTW I did join the ZA forum, I'm going to take another look at what they say in there.

Thanks,
Roberta

What anti-virus program are you now using.I use Nod32 by Eset.Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall. I hope you are not relying on ZA as virus protection.

Now I'm confused. Zone Alarm has anti-virus, firewall, and spyware protection - at least that's what it says. ????

My understanding is that ZA does have an AV, but the problem is that it is bundled with your firewall and if shut down, you are out of luck on both the firewall and AV. I am also using NOD32 with ZA and have not experienced any problems.

Roberta, Zone Labs has those services (products) available, but you must have them in the package that you bought. Zone Alarm Pro is a stand alone firewall and the additional module for anti-virus must be added on.

OK, now I see. I have been calling it the wrong name - I have Zone Alarm Security Suite.

So.....how about a suggestion for a new anti-virus and firewall?? Someone else suggested Norton, but CNET doesn't like it very much.

This might save some time...

A ton of people are going to respond to this post, which has been a topic a bazillion times, and most will say something similar:

If you're willing to pay, NOD32 antivirus and ZoneAlarmPro's firewall are your best bets.

If you want to go the free route, Avast (which I use), AVG or AntiVir along with ZoneAlarm's free firewall or Sygate Personal Firewall (which I use).

Just Google to find 'em (Sygate can be had on http://www.oldversion.com). Good luck!

That's funny, the IT person here at work recommended almost exactly the same software. : )

Thanks very much, I will check them out.

If you feel your problems are ZA related, enable the XP Windows Firewall, uninstall ZA Suite, & see if your crashes continue.

If they don't, look at alternatives.
If they do, then the problem may be elsewhere.

OK - I enabled my Windows Firewall, uninstalled ZA Security Suite, and downloaded AntiVir Guard. So far everything is working well. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks everyone.

A word of advice: I think there's been a misunderstanding. The suggestion to enable the Windows Firewall was only to test out your system. It is woefully lacking as an everyday firewall. You'd be much safer getting one of the other firewalls mentioned above...

LilJoe....Nod32 is not a firewall. It is strictly anti-virus.

Nowhere in my post did I say Nod32 was a firewall, she asked what we used for protection and I replied that I use Nod32 and ZA Pro.

It's the formatting of your first response, LJ. Hard to see the period when there isn't a space after.
