Hi folks..Can you give me an idea of how long it should take to scan disk my hard drive in thorough mode? I have a 30GB hard drive....Win Me.....256MB Ram.....800MHZ AMD Athalon..... I ran this from a DOS prompt using the startup disk cause it kept restarting even in safe mode. Took like 3.5 hours. I remember when I got the computer and running it from windows taking 20 minutes before???? I have seen posts here before about it restarting but from safe mode nothing is to be running..I even shut doen screen saver..nothing in ctrl-alt-del other than explorer???? I run Pc Cillin 2000 and keep it updated also religiously..so I have no viruses. Thanks for your input on this.

30BG is a hell of a lot of ground to cover. Depending on several factors, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised that it takes that long. Are you sure it used to take just 20 minutes to scan in Thorough mode in DOS?
Scotterpops I am almost sure it was that quick as I would go downstairs for a few and come back and it would be done??? But DOS is the ultimate way of doing it with nothing running and took that long??? Now Defrag will run in Windows without restarting??? That only took 20 minutes also??? Is that about right for Defrag of this size of a hard drive?

20Gig HDD...WinME...using Norton's Disk Doctor (scandisk) and SpeedDisk (defrag) from the Norton Utilities...everything takes 15 minutes when I use them (religiously). When I first used these, it took maybe 45 minutes to do both (total) - optimized sectors, etc. Really a great software package...better than the scandisk/defrag from WinME.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Scan Disk in thorough mode scans the entire disk, not just the parts where you have data. The more problems it finds the longer it will take. Each time it comes to a suspected bad cluster, it will make five attempts to repair that cluster before marking it as unusable. It will also attempt to remove any data stored on the bad clusters and relocate it elsewhere, and making a new FAT entry so that the data can be located. 30GB in under four hours is pretty good.
