Since I've installed Windows XP I now get a choice at start up as to which OS I want to use and a little countdown of about 20 seconds before it chooses Win98 for me. How do I get rid of this? I want to use XP all of the time and don't want a choice. How can I rid my PC of all Win98 stuff (and hopefully clear up a little HD space at the same time!) or does XP need some of those 98 files to work correctly? Thanks to you all in advance... this site has helped me soooooo much!
You can alter your startup options by hitting winkey + pause/break to bring up System Properties, then clicking on the Advanced tab.
98 is still there because you've installed XP on a seperate partition. I don't think there's any easy way to get rid of it without doing a clean install of XP by booting with the XP cd. If you have an upgrade version, all you have to do is insert your 98 cd when it asks for confirmation of your upgrade eligability.
There a few ways to accomplish what you want to do, however, to my mind, the best is to save your data, reformat and clean install. Since you have a dual boot setup, wiping your Win98 may destroy information on how and where to boot to.
If you have the normal setup, C: = Win98 D: = WinXP and you are severly short of disk space, you may selectively delete Folders in Win98 (Leave root c: alone) then change the time countdown to zero (Boot.ini tab in Msconfig).
It highlights the Win98 choice at start up and I have to change it to WinXP. I just want it to skip straight to WinXP and then maybe change the countdown to zero. I didn't do a clean install. It was an upgrade on an approx. 4 year old system. According to Windows I've got a 9.5 gig hard drive (though I thought it was a 20 gig)and I've only got about 20% free space right now. I was hoping to rid my system of any Win98 stuff and boot right up to XP everytime.
