" Favorite version of Norton Antivirus?"

Being that newer is not necessarly better (2007 won't install with zone alarm on), what version do you Norton users find is your favorite? Of the ones that are still supported that is.

Norton 2003!!! It went downhill after that one.

With the advice of the techs here it's going to be Nod32 for me & the clients who are willing to pay & Antivir for free for those who can't.

I had no problem installing and running NAV 2007 on several XP machines running ZoneAlarm free. When the box popped up stating that Zone Alarm should be uninstalled first, I simply dismissed the warning and proceeded to install NAV. Both apps run fine together on my machines.

2001? Lol... that was horrible, fragile, blow up in your face kind of stuff. In my opinion, that was the version where it really started to go down hill. Oddly enough, I saw fewer problems with NAV 2001 on WinME than Win98/Win98 SE. I can't tell you how many times I had to uninstall and reinstall that shitware (hmm.. I just had to add that word to my firefox spell checker's dictionary heheh) for people. In my books, Nav 2000 was the last version where I would have said "that's good software".

Note: Nav 2007 is somewhat of an improvement over NAV 2006 (which in my opinion was too crippling and annoying) It's still too bloated though, but much less so on the user interface.

Nav 2005 wasn't too bad either, in comparison to NAV 2004 which made me nauseous.

Nav 2003 wasn't too horrible either (an improvement over Nav 2002 which was still quite fragile)

Only the newest versions of NAV offer extended protection for trojans and other malware. To continue using versions prior to 2006 is a fools errand, since it offers far less comprehensive protection. Also, the newer versions have daily instead of weekly automatic updates. Whether you prefer some other program over NAV is a personal choice, hopefully based upon sound reasoning, and not just internet buzz, but sticking with ancient versions of any security software is just plain foolish.

I've put 2007 on one PC as the sub ran out on 2006 for that one and it seems definitely faster, both in loading and in running. Like Shelly said, it updates daily, as did 2006, and installed over 2006 from NSW 2006 without a hitch. (Figured it wouldn' hurt to try as I had a daily image to fall back on if there was trouble) The quick start said it would either assist or suggest that any other AV be un-installed but no warning about 2006.

I don't see any appreciable change in memory assigned and have never had any problems that I could assign to Norton's "bloat" stealing resources.

Sadly, after using Norton products since they were really designed and written by Peter Norton, I have had enough of the headaches associated with NAV 2007. 2006 wasn't too bad after the first month of updates, but the 2007 version is just not compatible with my system(s).

I've already replaced it on two laptops due to freezes and lock-ups and yesterday I had three office computers completely lock up for the third time while running scans. They all froze up solid after about 2,500 files and nothing would get the system back except for a forced reboot on all three.

I used the NAV removal tool to completely remove and then reinstalled these each twice. I don't have time for this foolishness any longer. I just bought 7 licenses two months ago, but they are now removed and NOD32 is running quite nicely at this time.

My boot up time is two minutes shorter and the shutdown actually shuts down in 45-50 seconds.

It really is too bad, but the problems seemed to start soon after Symantec got it's fingers on Norton. Since then, it seems to be a cycle of bad products.

Just so you know, I still have an old DOS computer that I play with once and awhile which has an original copy of Norton Commander on it that I bought in the early 90's. State of the art at the time. A neighbor has been bugging me to buy it and I just may sell it this weekend.

Fred,

I use 2X Explorer to copy files between my networked computers in the office and at home. I also use it to sync the USB Flash drive, which is how I get the files home. It does allow for selective copying, which works very well for my needs.

I have been reevaluating using Norton. NAV has always been effective protection, and never allowed anything bad through. But I have for years been getting it as part of Norton System Works, always free after rebates.

Symantec seems to be backing off updating NSW for 2007, and rethinking their rebate program. So I have to rethink Symantec.

I thought about that and when the chance came to get this 3 license NAV2007 for free with rebates, I went ahead. The only things I really used from NSW probably didn't change much and I had a subscription that was expiring.

You're probably going to want to buy a third party defragmenter of some sort for Vista when the time comes, though. I'd hate the (almost nonexistant) user interface for the defragmenter in Vista. It's completely non interactive and doesn't show any progress at all! Though maybe you'd just like the schedule it and forget it type setting. I don't care for that, defragmenting is something I would only do when necessary.

Unless that's just in the release candidates and they change their minds on this for the final.

The only things you'd ever find in stores here are Norton and McAfee.

Kaspersky kicks ass, but I prefer Nod32 because it's light weight and low CPU usage. "Better" takes all factors into account, with me.

I agree on Kaspersky and Nod32, although Avira is hot on their tail. I have been trying them all out lately. Gawd love 30 day trials. Kaspersky is soon coming out with a new version with vastly improved heuristics. But when I finally decide to plunk down my money it probably be either Kaspersky or Nod32.

I wish their buying strategy was like Prevx's though. With them you use it without paying until it catches and cleans something and then a 30 day trial kicks in which you have to buy it after that expires. I have been running it for a couple months now behind whatever I am testing at the time and haven't had to buy it yet but when I do I will get it for sure. It's detection is behaviour based as upposed to signature based. I am not sure if I would run it alone yet but it's a good right hook when the left one doesn't do the trick.

My only reservation with Avira Antivir is that computer illiterate users can't handle it when the updates don't answer. If the program gets too far out of date, it won't be able to update anymore. Also, they are confused by some of the messages like "blah blah only the latest version of the program can give you the protection" etc. when all it really means is "you haven't gotten the updates in 3 days and now we're nagging you". Another concern is that if the program gets broken, they aren't knowledgeable enough to know they have a problem.

So I don't give it to people unless they have half a clue. Those people need something fool proof and seamless, like Nod32 or at worst, AVG (say what you want about how weak it is, but at least it's fool proof and painless and I always find it up to date and still running). Other than that Antivir is one of my very favourites.

Ahh....thank you VERY much Mike. That answered a question I had about Anti-Vir.

I have a laptop that I only use for car diagnostics. It may go for months without being used. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't update Anti-Vir..... Now I know. beer

From what I am reading, they are coming out with a whole new version for Vista. Same trick they pulled a number of years ago with whatever version they released a few months before Windows Me. Anyone upgrading to Me had to buy a whole new version of Norton to work with it, even though they released a new version only months before.

Ater reading Shelly's post on older versions on Nav I decided to uninstall it. I was running Prevx and Boclean behind it anyways so decided to just go with them two for now.

I've heard good comments about Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. Is there any value in using it on a non-networked personal computer?

Last year I switched my company from Symantec Corporate to NOD32. I was tired of the headaches. I wouldn't recommend Symantec for corporate users anymore, and definitly not on a home computer.

Of the currently supported ones? None. I liked 2003 and 2004; but like Shelly said, they don't offer the greatest support in finding trojan threats and aren't updated daily. 2005 and 2006 gave me (and many others) problems. I switched to NOD32 and couldn't be happier. Now, Norton is just too bloated to work properly on a wide variety of computers.
