Hi, I've received a computer and have just loaded Windows 95 on it. A friend want it for internet access and emails. How do I download IE with no IE icon and no CD Rom? Mad but true - I cannot figure it out. It's the chicken and the egg situation - what comes first!!!
I wont plug any particular magazine, but if you look for the December issue of MaximumPC, I.E. 6.0 and Netscape 6 is on the MaximumCD. Additonally, there are other magazines that offer these as freeware. In any case, if you have a CD Burner, when you do an upgrade's, they are usually stored as a temp file in c:\windows\setup* Your choice...
---------- Find yourself a FREE AOL 6.0 disk, search it and find the "AOL Tech" folder, "ME Browser", and install it. It will work with windows 95, 98, for sure. It is IE version 5.50.4134.0600. Install it and remove the branding by selecting "start", "run", and in the run box type the following:
rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear
The branding will be removed then go to the windows update site and install the security related updates etc. DO NOT upgrade the browser itself as it will either install SP-1 or SP-2 and you don't want that.
This version works absolutely PERFECT for me and it is very fast. You won't have the compatiblity problems such as with Quicktime and others.
It may install with only 56 bit encryption but that depends what version you install it over but the encryption can be upgraded easy. Feel free to e-mail me if you need more info. I know what it's like to fight these darn browsers and I am glad that by accident I found this version that seems to be the best I have ever used. Hope this info helps someone out. Take care. -----------
Shelly is correct. The installation of Win95 from the Microsoft Disc, or Installation diskettes, should have loaded a version of IE on the computer, unless a custom install was done and it was elected not to do so.

I think you're right Lil' Joe.
The problem is that those early versions of IE are going to be nothing but trouble with today's internet and email.
I know the early IE 4s had a lot of problems and I wouldn't go to the trouble of installing anything below IE 5 now.

Edit: I forgot to say that about the problem of no CD drive, if that's the case, is for aggi_uk to temporarily install a CD drive from another computer in the W95 computer until IE and any other programs are installed.
I can't imagine trying to install major software without a CD drive nowadays.
>The original win95 that came on diskettes that I have, had >IE3 on it . > > As far as I remember,IE4.0 came with win98,and IE 5 came >soon after.
I haven't got a CD Rom. I still have the diskettes but it doesn't appear to have IE3 on it. I've gone into Add / remove Progrmmes and installed MSN Network but all the telephone dial up numbers are out-of-date. Am I missing something? I didn't do a custom install - I did recommended. If I had a browser it would be a start!

Gain access to the friends harddrive and install the IE program the same way you installed windows. There are plenty of cd's that have the IE program on it.
Thinking more on it, with the win 95 install gets you IE3 and the means to set up an msn account? If your friend is going to go with another ISP he'll need their software as well, either by cd or downloading it which means you have to have an existing ISP account, a cd drive or an olllder version that fits on a floppy. Is this incorrect?
What ISP are they going with?

They want to use a free ISP, if possible. I haven't got a browser but am trying to connect to MSN and having lots of problems because all the dial-up numbers are too old (I guess) and I can't connect to any of them.

OK,go to a search engine and search for QNX which is a browser that fits on a floppy. THat will get you on the internet where you can download a browser of your choice.
