It depends on the Operating System you are using, if it is Windows 9x, it is like a waste of time, there are so many ways to go around a folder protection in Windows 9x that it is not even funny.
You don't need anything in Windows 2000 to restrict access to files and folders, give the current user access to that folder in the Security tab for the folder, take out everybody else from there (You will need an account with Administrative rights over the folder to do that) Make anybody else to login with a different user name. Do not make any other user a member of the Administrator group To make it even more difficult you can encrypt the files and folders, in the properties of the file or folder, go to Advanced in the General Tab and check the Encrypt to Secure Data box, from then on even if any other user gains access to that file or folder, the content of the files will be unreadable, only you or the administrator of the machine will be able to read it. (To send this file to somebody else be sure to copy it somewhere else, and uncheck the encryption of the file)
Hi there. I was actually posting a questoin about that earlier too. I am using a program called paranoid. I used Google to find an addy for it. It works great though. Im not sure if it will work with Windows 2000 I am using Windows ME and it works fine.let me know if you can find it or not and if it works for you.
I have used WinZip's password protection on data files. I just zip them and assign a password. Hard to access, or open, the zip file without the correct password.
But you will not need this if you use encryption or File and folder security in Windows 2000 (You need NTFS for this) and do not feel safe with Winzip password, How many hits do you think you will get if you type in Google "winzip password crack"?
