"Norton Utilities 2002"

Anyone using NU 2002 with WIN XP and is it worth it?

I see several items are only compatible with Win 98.

The only thing I really use is the AV. I use Diskeeper 7.0 for defragging (much better product) and Zone Alarm Pro (you can use the free version). So you can say I wasted some money.

I just bought it $50 Canadian, boxed version, with a $30 Canadian rebate from Symatec. Win XP has its own monitoring, so I wonder if there will be any conflicts. Maybe I should return it. Thanks.

never trust only ms's monitoring for virus's use a third party
winXp has security holes in it like everything eles does. it is to be excpected in software. just that winxp is more secure then win9x os's

XP has a Firewall to protect from intrusions, but it won't control outgoing. It does not have an Anti-Virus.

>Maybe I should return it.

That would be up to you.

Actually, the firewall in XP is pretty good. It passes all of GRC's probes in stealth mode. To bad it doesn't control outgoing packets too.

Since when are we overseas????????????????? I don't recall any boat ride.

I have been using NSW 2002 specifically made for WinXP the three most important features that are invaluable are the Norton Utilities, with Disk Doctor, and Cleansweep and of course Disk Optimization. All of them work very well. I personnaly prefer Norton's Speed Disk which defrags faster and a lot better than Diskeeper. I have found over the years even while I was using W98SE and now the XP Norton is the best software that can do the job

I'm not sure I agree with this statement. I have the latest version of Diskeeper & I didn't even bother installing Norton Utilities after my last reformat.

I do use NAV however.

I would never be without Norton Utilities, and would not have purchased XP unless there was a compatable version available. Every version 2002 utility is compatable with XP.

I never purchased Norton System Works cause I already use AVG and ZAPro. Talking about NU. We have the same products as you guys down South. Looks the same.

So, Shelly, you reckon its worth it? Always used it with Win 98.

the only thing I use from systemworks, besides NAV is Windoctor, it fixes pretty well the registry and has a backup. I'm sticking with diskeeper. Cleansweep 2002 is a joke, the 2001 version has more features, I still use the latter and it blends seamlessly with the rest.

I have to agree with Shelly, I have been using Norton since Ver 3.5 (remember that shelly? Norton's dual pane shell that DOS stole for version 4.0?).

I have to say these day's that Norton has fairly well integrated with MicroSoft since Norton bought out Central Point. Alway's wished Peter Norton would have made his own O/S. NSW Pro has some good interactive programs and excellent integration with XP. I think they complement each other. I couldn't see having one without the other.

One thing to consider about the Norton stuff - Microsoft bought some of it. If you look at Properties for utilities in Windows such as ScanDisk and Defrag, they were origionally written by Symantic (Norton) and licensed for use by Microsoft. Of course, Symantic sells a much better version than the "free" stuff you find in Windows.

Microsoft has picked up a lot of stuff that way, by licensing technology developed by others. Do you really think that they are that innovative? Not even from the very beginning they weren't!

Hi:

I like NU2002 with my XP. It is hassle-free, and I like to use it to clear junk files with its WinDoctor. Microsoft finally latched on to Diskeeper's Defrag program; hence, XP's Defrag is probably a bit better than NU2002's Defrag. Also, NU2002 performs automatic life updates of virus defintions. In brief, Norton is quality stuff. The user can rely on it. If you buy a new version of Windows, get a new version of NU to go with it. It's "required."

Cheers!

Fourls
