"File associations"

I found some wonderful speed tweaks that actually worked and I didn't even have to go into the registry (Tweak3D.net). I have hit a snag, however.

There are some settings for a file called 'MSDOS.SYS' and when I double click to open it, the menu says "Open with". This spells disaster for me as I totally ruined my programs using the wrong association one time. I have been reading for hours and I still cannot figure out how to determine which you choose to open a particular file. Most of the tutorials tell you to choose the most logical one--whose logic are they talking about? I will never understand this stuff! Why can't they have the computer pick out the association like it does with a lot of the files--you just double click and it opens?!

Can anyone help me with this file association stuff so I don't have to do a reinstall every time I open one of these files? Thanx!

open it with notepad, make sure the checkmark for "always..." is cleared.
edit-make a copy first just in case your tweak doesn't pan out.

You are getting sleepy, very sleepy...

Yomama1953,

I am using Windows2000 but, if I remember correctly, the default setting for the Open With window in Windows98 is as illustrated below:

Before you try any program to open a file uncheck the box next to "Always use this program to open these files". Then if it doesn't work, you can try another program very easily.

If it does work, you can do it again with the box checked.

That's the way I do it , Hon. Good luck

P.S. the others have helped you open it. But I'll help you one step more. If the tweak doesnt mention this.

MSDOS.SYS is a read only file, so before you open it with notepad or whatever, right click on the file and remove the checkmark next to read only and click apply.

Make sure to put the checkmark back after you add the tweak!.

Also do not delete any existing part of it!

If you get an "Error in MSDOS.SYS" when you boot then you should check your syntax.

Most of the MSDOS tweaks are either going to turn something off (0-zero) or turn something on (1-one).

IE to turn off the annoying windows logo you would add

logo=0

You can also add lines to disable drivespace and doublespace disk compression support. Which for some bizarre reason is enabled by default in win98. But then win98 installs the fat16 to fat32 converter even if you enable large drive support.

Lots of MSDOS tweaks. Be sure you understand their effects fully before applying them as you could make your system unbootable.

Thanks everyone. I knew I could count on my friends in the forum!

If anybody else has a painfully slow dial up connection, just the first tweaks in the system.ini file DOUBLED my speed! First speed tweaks I ever found that actually worked and worked well.

On a lighter note:
Sweetpea, I literally live across the street from my home state of Arkansas, on the Oklahoma side of the street. These Sooner fans are kinda agitated at hearing me call the Hogs! I love it!!

Hey Tuff,
Go to Tweak3D.net and on the right hand side of the page is the index. I used "Quick Speed Tips", and "Win9X modem tweaks".

I just did a clean reinstall because of so many problems (don't know if it was virus related or not) but, I could not fix it, even my AVG got corrupted! Before I got all my fixes and patches from the Microsoft site, I was racing along at 16kbps. After the tweaks, it shows 28 but I think it is faster! Good luck.
