"New version of W10?"

Windows Update says there is an optional version 1909 update. What is it?

It's the latest major release of Windows 10. You will need it in order to receive subsequent updates. You can check your current version of Windows 10 by opening the Run dialog(Windows key + r), type winver then press Enter or click OK.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

Thanks.

I get 1903, but Windows Update says 1909 is an optional update.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Plan on it taking a few hours to fully complete - but you can continue using your computer during a good portion of the time, if you wish.

So far only a few minor things I've had to fix:

Short cut arrows returned to my desktop icons but are now gone again.

The old style, Win 7, volume control was removed, but is now back.

Iconoid, a desktop icon position saving program, had to be started manually after the update, but is now back to normal.

There's probably more but if they're as minor as these three, I'd say installation was successful.

Jim.

While I have had 1903 for some time, without issues, what I'm wondering about, is why 1909 is listed as optional.

As I understand it, it is an "Optional Feature Update".

Probably most of us don't need it right now, but if as Ttech said, it will be required for subsequent updates, might as well beat the rush.

Jim.

I backed up everything before I started the installation even though I know the update can be rolled back - just to be extra safe.

Jim.

Edit: Win 7 games were gone - just as in previous significant updates - though the files remained - which I removed with Revo before reinstalling them as a group. Surprisingly, games won/lost/high score histories, etc. were retained.

One more thing:

System Restore protection was turned off by the update. And, of course, all previous restore points were removed.

I turned it back on and created a new point.

Jim.
