"CD writing with Nero"

I just started using Nero which came with my PC(WinXP Home, Athlon 1700XP)So far I have copied 5 music CDs to use in my car.
I put the Cd in the DVD as source and the blank in my CDRW.
When I click on burn I get this message:
"Both the source and destination for on the fly copy process are connected tothe same IDE bus.We would strongly recommend to connect your source and destination drives to different IDE busses."
"Technical background:An IDE bus cannot handle interleaved read and write commands. This will reduce data transfer rate during "on the fly"copies andmay therefore cause a buffer underrun error"
I click on burn anyhow and it copies flawlessly. The CDs play like the originals in the car.
Is this something which will cause trouble for me when I start making Data backups? Will this cause problems when I want to make edited CDs from more than one source etc.And most of all how difficult is it to switch one to another IDE.I don't think it is a do it yourself project for this duffer or is it????

hey there..
everything will be ok so you arent doing anything wrong. btw, its easy to change busses. have a look in your motherboard manual and it should have a section on hard drive installation and devices. have a look at the diagrams that SHOULD come in these pages and see what they mean by IDE bus. its quite simple, its where your IDE cable or cables connect to your motherboard and all nero is telling you is that there is a better config for your DVD and CDRW. but hey, if it works and it does the job and you arent getting any beer coasters and no error msgs, then all should be ok. but its definately worth the look into your IDE config, dont worry its not as scary as you may think. happy burning!

Your Nero message is quite correct You will eventually run across some copying that will not work correctly because of your setup. It just means that you don't want both devices on the same cable. You have a Primary Master and Primary Slave on one cable, and a Secondary Master, and Secondary Slave on the other cable. The devices don't care which position they occupy on the cables, as long as the jumpers are set correctly for that position. The plug on the far end of the cables are the masters, and the slaves are the center plug. You may have to switch some things around to get the burner and DVD on seperate cables, but as long as the jumpers are changed accordingly you will be ok. On the PC 911 homepage go to the More How-To Guides and the tutorial on installing IED Devices. Here is the link, good luck. http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/idedrv1.html

I use XP Pro and Nero. My Plextor burner is the master on the 2nd IDE with the DVD drive as the slave. The setup has been like that for a year and I've yet to burn a coaster. I have never seen that error.

I have had my Plextor 12/10/32 as the master on the secondary channel, and my toshiba CD-Rom as the slave on the same channel. I have never had any problems. I get that message, but ignore it.

The problem shows up the most on older, slower systems.

And if this positive input isn't enough you can always rip a copy to your hard drive and copy from there and later delete it from the hd. Nero has been the best and easiest copying I have had yet. Will never go back to that other brand (Adaptec or something like that), burned at least a dozen coasters on that project.

Happy burning

I get this message too, but i don't mind, i've never had any problems when writing a cd. But then again, I have burnproof, so it takes quite a lot to get a buffer underrun. But I think your comp should be able on handling this problem.

Thanks for all the encouragement and imformation and to Gray Falcon for the imfo on changing it if it causes me problems in the future.
I have only done straight copying so far.If any of you have made a custom copy (individual songs from several different CDs) I'd appreciate a step by step walk through of the process using the Nero terminology.PC911 has never failed me yet and is helping again
THANKS MUCH!

You're stuck with your sign in name as you just turned 82. You might want to try Nero's Express interface. You must have the lates version, 5.5.8.2, to run it. I found it so easy, I stopped using Roxio's EZCD for music.

Hi Sonny,What is the Express program and what does it do?
The upgrade to 5.5 shows for Win 2000.Can I assume this will be OK for myWin XP home?
Will the upgrade go on over the 5.5 or must I remove anything first?
As it must be obvious to one as familiar with this as you are that I am at ground zero where this is concerned.
Thanks for the site address and any other help you can give me!

John,

What is the Express program and what does it do?

Express is just an easier interface and is switchable with the newest version. After you upgrade, find the shortcut, right click the shortcut, select Properties and add a /w to the end of the Target.

The upgrade to 5.5 shows for Win 2000.Can I assume this will be OK for myWin XP home?

Yes. I am running XP Pro.

Will the upgrade go on over the 5.5 or must I remove anything first?

You can upgrade over your old version. When you install the new version, you will be asked during the install if you want to upgrade, just answer Yes.

Hi Sonny,Downloaded the latest? version of the burn program late last night. When I went to ahead Nero ,Burn,Properties,I got the screen you sent me.When I added /w and clicked OK I got this message
The name "C:\Program Files\ahead\Nero\nero exe"/w specified in the target box is not valid.Make sure the path and file name are correct.
I now have 3 burn versions when I go to the program .How can I tell which is the latest one or should I delete the last 2?
How can I tell if the down load took?
I may have created the last 2 by clicking on create shortcut.By now I probably fouled it up so you can'timagine what I've done.
At least the program still runs in spite of my efforts.
Any words of wisdom? I sure could use some..THANKS,John

There's a simple loader for Nero/Nero Express called Nero Runner - it's been posted here before.

Go to http://www.xp-erience.org/download.php and search for nero runner. It allows you to choose between the standard and express versions, and specify a default. Just make a shortcut to it instead of direct to Nero

Hi Sonny,The space did it.It now accepts the address. How can I tell if the updated version is the one I have.? Will I possibly cause any problems if I delete the Nero burning rom2 and 3,leaving the main one?
Thanks Paul. I will look into the site you suggested.
You guys can't imagine how great it is to be able to get help like you provide.Hopefully someday I may understand what I am doing .I could write my own programs on the old C-64.But the old brain is getting rusty. Thanks agai

On the first screen for Nero Express click the ? in the lower left corner and select Version Info. It should read 5.5.8.2. I'm not sure where your original version came from (CD, download) so what you need to keep is the original version and the latest update you downloaded.

I won't get into the "which is the best CDRW software" argument, but I will note that I run my IDE devices on SEPERATE 80 wire IDE (round) cables. My two hard drives (40 & 20 GIG), each run as masters, plugged into a PCI ATA/100 IDE controller card, the other IDE devices in their own IDE connectors on the MOBO.
*No "expert" ever suggests my setup, but it clearly works. No conflicts, no hardware or "MS-DOS compatiblity errors."

Kirkland, that's because we don't just assume that people have more than two IDE headeres available in their systems unless they tell us so. It would be stupid to tell them to go out and buy an IDE card that they don't really need.
