"Zone Alarm blocking FTP traffic on port 21, HELP!"
I'm running Windows XP with Zone Alarm Standard installed. I put up an FTP site but no one can access it. Zone Alarm is giving me alerts, but wont allow me to configure a rule to allow the traffic in. If I disable it, no problem, but that opens up every other vulnerability out there. Any suggestions on how to get this working? I'm running DSL with DHCP addressing.

set the computer you want to access into your trusted network.
Also, allow the ftp program to accept connections from the network. (allow server)
Usually that last tip is enough. I ran one for a while and that was all I needed.
Edit: re-read your post and realize that if you are telling people about your ftp site, it might get to be a hassle to try to add all of them. CG might have hit on your answer. While I know people who have set up FTP sites with ZA (like me,) it doesn't mean thats your cup of tea

you might want to ditch zone alarm for kerio personal firewall. it is an excellent software firewall that is extensively configurable and will let you create very specific rules, e.g. open a certain port in a certain direction. i'm very impressed with it so far and recommend it.

William, if you decide to switch firewalls, be sure to follow the ZoneAlarm uninstall instructions to the letter. I tried to uninstall it while it was still running and had to reinstall it and do it right. You can get the instructions on their Web site.
