I bought diesel yesterday in Colchester and paid 93.9 pence per litre. If you convert that to dollars a gallon it comes to........wait for it.......7.44 dollars !!! Now the UK gallon is a bit bigger that a US gallon, so maybe 6.9 dollars ????
You may wonder why anybody lives on thes islands!!!

I filled up yeaterday for $2.689. To my surprise, I was at Sam's Club a half hour earlier and they wanted $2.809 They are supposed to be about .10 a gallon cheaper, not .12 a gallon more! The only places in town more expensive than Sam's are the swindlers up by the airport.

Why is it always so expensive overseas? Is the cost of living higher than it is here. Or is gasoline just a rare commodity?

we in australia have our own oil rigs in bass straight plus many others, also we are taxed twice on petrol. Also we have a government that could not care less so long as they can maintain their parlimentary lurks and perks, and we are totally apathetic, plus the government lie so much THEY dont know when they are telling the truth about the overseas fluctuation of the oil situation. Plus we have a government commission that is supposed to keep them in check over oil prices but is as useless as an ice cream cone in the middle of the Sahara. That is only a few of the reasons it is so expensive.

Gas taxes are a major source of revenue there. Even in the US it is heavily taxed, but nothing like in other countries.

Then I hope McDonalds pays $14+ an hour overseas. That's ridiculous. It's illegal for companies to price gouge. Now the governments are.

No surprise. And that's because SAM'S/Walmart's prices are set in Bentonville, not locally, as are the chains and independents, who can price match at will.
So every once in a while, SAM'S (and we) get caught in a "Wolkenkukusheim"(sp); (Cloudy Kuk-ku land).

In Chess, its called a "Zugswang", (in between move).
That simply means you have a superior game position and after you make your next move, usually a tempering or consolidating move, no matter what your opponent does, they cannot improve their own position;
Zugswang.

And since I don't drive in Brooklyn (or anywhere else in NYC), I don't have the foggiest idea of how much gas is.

You're wrong. I talked to the people in charge and each Sam's is required to survey gas prices within a five mile radius of the store and base their pricing on being below the local competition. This process was put in place when the retail gas dealers were screaming about unfair competition from Sam's. I have verified this by visiting all three Sam's stores in Jacksonville, and they all run different gas prices from each other. One store is consistently cheaper than the others, Unfortunately that store is not the most convenient one for me to visit.

All I know for sure is the prices are not changed locally. The managers certainly have input, but Bentonville actually sets the prices on the pumps by satellite , just like every other price in SAM'S/Walmart is set: by Bentonville's computers: (exceptions being "Manager's specials" and close out merchandise).

And often enough, the reason for the pricing anomalies is Bentonville fails to respond quickly enough to local price fluctuations as you noted.

Do you have to use high test? Very few cars require it today.

2001 Acura 3.2 CL2 Type S owner's manual:
"designed to operate on premium unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number of 91 or higher"

I'm not happy about it but I bought the car at a very good price.

You must have a supercharged engine! otherwise i don't believe it would be necessary, i was using plus 89 Octane in a Town Car,i went to regular 87 Octane ,i see no difference. Please don't construe this as me telling you what gas to buy.

I have a 1997 Ford Aerostar van, 3.0 liter engine. If I use the 87 octane, the valves ping. 89 octane, they don't. Of course, the 89 octane is 10 cents more a gallon.

No supercharger. Normally aspirated engine with compression ratio of 10.5 to 1.
All suggestions welcome.

Today it was $2.799 and I found out why my fuel milage had dropped a couple weeks ago. Something punctured my fuel filler line down by the tank and I have been driving a ticking time bomb with a slow very small but steady leak. Keeping my tank full was actually hurting me. I could buy a lot of gas for the cost of the repair.

Well this gas hike is just silly to some degree.
I think this should be a call for the world to find another
way for people to get around.... vehicles that are propelled buy some other type of energy.

There has to be something.... something else that works.
What about Hydrogen, electric, or some other means. What about harnasing power from magnets or solar or something.
Maybe even just do what Fred Flintstone did and run our feet on the
road trhough the bootom of our cars. ha ha

has to be something.

My guess is that something could be implored, but the ones who control the oil would do much to keep the world from useing other means...

anyway...

I myself like the idea of electric powered stuff.. even if not for the
long hauls... but just for the local stuff. Most of the time I leave my house I usually go within say 5 miles of my house.... which means if the city would allow me to drive a golf cart on the road I could get most of my traveling done with that golf cart and their would be less pollution etc. IF people used them.

I would still need a car... but would have to use the car a lot less if I could use a golf cart.

I have read about many communites that have been designed with many many miles of golf cart roads where residents can get around effeciently on golf carts. I think that should be implored more and more... maybe even become a law.. where new communities that are built must provide golf cart roads where residents can get around to major areas.

Golf carts are cool and they are fun to ride and they are quiet and they do not spill oil or spit out lots of pollution.

I think a society propery built for golf cart access is a great Idea.

I think a society properly built for golf cart access is a great Idea.

I do to Pako "wouldn't help me ,as i am to rural . However, what you say makes a lot of sense. One of the problems would be the unwillingness for most people to move about at 10 MPH,hell if they can't drive their gas guzzling SUVs through residential neighborhoods at 50 MPH, and show everbody what they have,in an effort to inflate their EGOs,I just believe anything less would be unacceptable.

I heard President Bush say today that we could become oil independent because we had a lot of corn ! Well i poured a gallon of corn oil in my truck ,and now i can't get it started

Well yeah you make some good points.
But the Idea is to not do away with cars completely... just to have some travel roads available just for golf carts that people can use
for the local stuff. Sometimes I leave my house and I need to go distances.... use the car. But often I just need to get around within
say a 5 mile radius of my house for various errands and a golf cart would be great for that. I would buy a golf cart and use it now, only they wont allow them on the street or sidewalk... so its useless.

I just think alternative means of transportation should be used.

There are communities in the USA that have been designed for golfcart access and the people there love it and use them often. Cuts way down on traffic and pollution and the people there find it a fun way to get around. for local stuff.

Peachtree Georgia is one community that I know of. That community has like 80 miles worth of golf cart trails that lead to all kinds
of places that residents use often like shopping malls and parks, etc.

I think its a great Idea. Some people in that community say they hardly ever need a car at all because the golf cart access is so good.

Golf carts are pretty good, and they need very little maintenance compared to a car... other then the fact that you have to plugg them in at night... but thats not difficult to do.

YUP, I had found out about that and I think it is not fair.
In the case of any kind of product that people NEED. There should be some kind of legislature that "keeps things resonable." It is not reasonable in my opinion for oil companies to just decide that they want to near double their profits... so they are allowed to just raise the prices and then in turn everybody is hurting seriously... to the point of some people not being able to get to work... or having to change their job etc etc.

Just dosnt seem fair. Gas is a NEED... people need to get around.. the government should force oil companies to keep the price in the FAIR bracket... where... yes they can make a profit.. but not to the point where things are rediculoly priced for the everyday joe... even rediculously priced enough to cause some buisnesses to be unable to operate
and so on.

Just think what these price hikes do for a comapany like FEDX or UPS... and other comapnies where their service relies heavily upon travel of their comapny vehicles. Comapanies like those have millions of vehicles on the road all over the world on a daily basis. Were talking about an unbelieveable crunch to their profits and in turn we will all pay for it.. > buy inflated prices for services such as these.
Just not right.
This will also cause comapanies like these to have to make cutbacks... and that means that many people could lose their jobs and so on.

I know a lot of people that are emplyed buy companies like this and would hate to see them suffer one way or the other because of the gas hikes...

It doesn't do a thing to UPS or FedEx, they just add on surcharges to their rates. I get surchage updates every week from them. I don't mind because I pass it on to my customers. They don't mind because they pas it on to their customers. Guess who can'r pass it on...

If you feel strongly about it, contact Bush and Chaney, I'm sure that they will jump all over those greedy oil compannies... Oh wait, they are the oil companies! Forget I brought it up.

Since the current price refined gas at the refinery that the oil companies pay is only 43 cents per gallon, it does not take a great mathematician to figure out who is gouging the price at the retail pump.

We were already told that it WILL go above $3.00 today. Everyone is hovering at $2.99 right now, but I suspect that by the afternoon prices will be at the $3 mark.

Yup, that is what they are saying and well I certianly am not
happy about that. I have been making a lot of changes in my routine... to use places and services that are closer to my home because of this Gas Crunch. Its Just crazy... Gas is becoming a pretty big expense... In fact I have even gotten to the point of just leaving the car at home and just walking to the store and walking to things that are close buy..

Hmmm.... 4 dollars a gallon is just crazy.. I bet this will bring down the numbers in car sales... especailly for those large SUV types of vehicles that you see so much that get really BAD gass milage.

I see those Humvees all the time and well I bet its costing those people a LOT of money on gas to drive those things around at a time like this.

wooooooooooooo voooommmmmmm

The price rise may end up a good thing. We are profligate wasters of energy, and highprices may finally get Americans to change their habits and priorities. If world oil consumption dropped 20%, we might quickly see oil prices drop to $20 - $30 a barrel again.

The major impetus has to be to develop energy resources other than oil. A significant shift to nuclear power generation, solar and wind power, and hydrogen would quickly depress oil prices permanently. There are many technologies out there that were not worth exploring when cheap oil was available.

I don't fill-up anymore. I just put $20.00 bucks in. It seems like that spreads the pain out a little more evenly.

Yeah, we never got to see the price drops after Katrina and Rita everybody else did before the prices started back up again. We saw some relief but not much.
