" Frequent Dead Cellphone Battery Due to Nearby Magnet ."
Mon May-15-06 11:10 PM by Laurie

I own a Motorola V710 cellphone. This is a new problem. My battery dies within a few hours(after a full charge)when I put the phone in my brand new purse that contains a pocket with a magnetic snap on the flap of the pocket. This never happened before when I use to put my phone in my old purses without a magnet. Is the frequent dead battery problem due to the small magnet on the flap of my new purse pocket or is my battery dying?

I have a magnet closure on my cell phone case (Razr Phone) and it does not affect the battery. If you don't put the phone in your purse will it stay charged?

Laurie,

How old is the battery? I have a purse with a magnetic closure (it's a snap type thing) and it doesn't affect the cell phone. Does the new purse have a pocket for the cell phone or what?

Wait till you get your new phone bill and find out that the magnet has been causing your phone to dial random numbers all over the world.

Just kidding. I don't know what could be going on.

Oh geez Les, you really had me going there for a moment.

Yes Marti, the pocket is on the outside of the purse and designed for a place to put a phone or keys. The battery is about a year old.

Laurie, I'll do some research. I will also be with my quilting friends this week and will ask them, as they all have cell phones.

Can you provide a pic or link to show the magnet?

Did you call your cell phone provider?

I keep my cell in my purse when I'm out or in a pocket (or carry it around) when I'm at home. I replaced my old cell phone with a Razr about a month ago, guess I can put it next to a magnet and see what happens.

Is there anything else in the same pocket that could be shorting out the contacs on the phone?

There is no possible way that the magnetic field of a magnet can be discharging your phone. However, Motorola--at least used to use---magnets and reed (magnetic) switches to handle the open/shut function of the phone.

I'll bet your purse magnet is actuating the phones "open" functions, which at the very least, turns on the backlighting.

Funny you should mention that. Most of the time when I open up the phone after removing it from this pocket with the magnet, the phone appears to be activated to the speaker phone commands. It's prompting & waiting for me to give a verbal command. I never use this feature.

I'll bet that's it, and it would be easy to test. You might be able to leave the phone open and put it in the purse, see if it comes on.

Are you suggesting I take a magnet along duck hunting?
How strong of a magnet would I need to drain 3 phones in about an 8 foot area?

A magnet of any size can not have any affect on a lithium battery. It is possible to be affecting a magnetic switch.

Laurie,

I looked your phone up on the internet so I could see pictures of it. My guess is that you are turning on one of the outside buttons when you put in the purse pocket. Is it a tight fit?

Thanks for taking the time to look up the information to help. No the pocket is very spacious. I think I am just gonna go back to using my old purse. Cheaper than buying a brand new battery.
