of course that depends on the seller. if you're not comfortable you can use escrow services. in general, ebay is pretty good. i've bought and sold my share of stuff on ebay, only ran into one asshole so far, and it was no biggie. earlier this year i bought an electronic drumkit on ebay for 3,500 bucks. a lot of money, but i talked to the seller on the phone several times, everything worked out really well.
Ebay, in my opinion, is probably the most honest "auctioneer" in America. But that doesn't prevent dishonest people from using them as a vehicle, which does happen from time to time. Their feedback system, however, encourages honest transactions, and I think the number of unscrupulous sellers (and buyers) is very small.
