Who pretends to forget? The Snopes article you cite doesn't indicate that anyone quoted "pretends" to forget any of the statements attributed. In fact, the words "pretend", "forget", "forgot", and "forgotten" aren't anywhere in the article. Nor are "not remembered" nor "not recalled". The article has nothing to do with "pretending to forget".

Furthermore you apparently didn't bother to read the entire article, and didn't expect anyone else to or you may not have been so fast to post once a little thing called CONTEXT was taken into consideration.

None of those quoted started the war with Iraq. Beginning in January 2001 they were lied to about Iraq's WMD, just as you and I and the American public were lied to by the Bush Administration. Maybe you have forgotten this reality.

Jim.

It is so easy for political hacks to take statements out of context in order to create a bogus and deceptive picture of their preferred "reality". And so easy to fool the uninformed who have a bias toward a history that appears only in their imaginations.

I hope you do. I also hope some of it gets through.

This isn't a "leftists" vs. "rightists" issue. We relied on the administration to tell us the truth about Iraq. They lied to us - we were lied to - you and I were lied to. That's the reality.

Our soldiers are dying without justification. The country is divided and will become more divided in the upcoming presidential campaign. Our national debt has grown astronomically - generations from now our descendants will still be repaying the bill. I doubt that either "rightists" or leftists" envisioned this for America.

"Political hacks" can spin all they want. They'll succeed at convincing the uninformed and maybe that will be enough but that doesn't make this a "leftist" vs. "rightist" issue. It makes it an "Uninformed" vs. an "Informed" issue. If you read on as you say you shall, you'll be one of the informed - hopefully no one will call you a leftist because you are informed.

Jim.

I've lost track of what left (Democrat?) or right (Republican?) stand for. I think I am pretty conservative, even by Texas standards. A big conservative mantra use to be (still is to me) don't trust government.
Why would I want to believe GWB any more than Clinton without questioning their motives? The main objective of government is to grow and have more power. If you think government has shrunk or is less intrusive since GWB took office, you haven’t been paying attention.

Sorry for the tangent. You can go back to quibbling about politicians lying again.

Damn Jim, No matter where I turn I find myslf in your sights(I hope its not an 88 you are using.(they always scared the **** out of me !)The "pretend" and "forget" are my words.I hope it did not disappoint you not to find them in the article..It is very interesting to hear the words of these people from back then and compare the words of today.
I hope you did not think I posted the article without reading the whole thing and I considered context.I see alot of pieces of stuff posted that is taken out of context and you should proud of me for being willing to post the unabridged tale!
I am not impressed with the "if I knew then what I know now "lameness. At least two of the (I love saying this) warmongers were on the intelligence commttee and saw the same imformation that GW saw regarding WMDs in Iraq.Presidet Clinton and his staff were of the same opinion. The United nations and the inspectors were as well. The UN had many citations against Iraq.France Russia and even members of the UN were making big bucks trading with Iraq.
Now it is Those damn Republicans lied to us.The UN and the worlds "spooks" and the previous administration said WMDS were there.I sure don't think voting for a non binding bill to stop our efforts (Because the 08 election looms is a good use of legilatve time .I sure it encourages our enemies as well.Do I like what is happening in Iraq today ?Hell no!.But i hate to see the cockroaches running for cover without at least swatting a few.Good night I am off to watch Leno !

I don't think there would be any dispute that the Snopes article is factual (as far as it goes), as is 99.9% of what is posted there.

What isn't mentioned is another fact - all those statements are based on the now totally discredited premise that there were active WMDs in Iraq - false information provided by the US security services and the Republican administration.

How in Hell did George Bush control Bill Clinton or anyone else for that matter, in 1998. This forum is really getting polarized. Who did we blame for all the earths problems before Bush? Any wonder that it hard to raise money to support this forum?

I certainly hope we can have a reasonable discussion and not withhold contributions from this fantastic site.If you are only here for the Off Topic Lounge you will never find a better one.As for the Computer forum it is the best anywhere !
If what goes on here upsets you that much ,I suggest you might stay in the Computer section.
Since I logged on tonight ,the nicest thing that has been said about me is that I am "uniformed".That didn't cause me anger.I was a stirred by being called a troll and something about being impressed with my late night trolling.and you know whatI am glad I sent my contribution in because I am going to have an entertaining night.I may learn something and some one else may as well.It SURE WILL NOT SOUR ME ON THIS GREAT SITE.send your contribution in now and watch them skewer me FUN !

One small criticism, if I may: Until I retired in 03, I was part of the "US security services," and we did NOT provide false information. We told the truth: There were NO weapons of mass destruction, and we said so. This didn't please the political crowd, who wanted intelligence to support their entirely unsupportable conclusions. They WANTED to go to war, so the "politicals" formed their own intelligence entity under the direction of one Douglas Feith in the Department of Defense and, hey Presto! they found "evidence" of the existence of WMD. Bogus, all of it. This charade has now been (publicly) well-documented.

That may well be fair comment, and if so I'm happy to stand corrected. But uninformed people like me probably regard them all as part of the US Security service. To the public it's a pretty fine distinction.
