"O, Canada! More Americans Heading North"
Wed Aug-01-07 03:42 PM by Jordan

The Number of Americans Moving to Canada in 2006 Hit a 30-Year High
http://www.abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3433005&page=1
I consider this to be good news for both the United States and Canada.
Canada gets U.S. haters, Boosh haters, cowards, socialists, misfits, and the diversity/multi-culturalism lovers.
The United States becomes stronger and more united by the absence of these types.
One wish, I would ask that Canada to insist that they become citizens.

With an almost unparalled record of obnoxious, ignorant posts, you have now outdone yourself. I wonder how many went to get medical care they could not afford here?

What? It's true! I haven't read the link, but I suspect they are moving due to the political problem in America today. Sure some of them are moving to Canada for reasons of healthcare and other reasons, but the reason for the surge is because of our Administration.

This happend during Vietnam also.

But are you going to deny all this too just to support your post towards Jordan?

In case you have not read a paper lately, we no longer have a draft in the US. During Ve=Vietnam they went to avoid the draft.

I don't know if you try to appear dense, but sometimes talking to you is like talking to a cantaloupe.

I don't read the paper, but you don't need to, to know this.

And everyone knows how much know-it-all's who can't admit wrong or fault are regarded.

Sure people left the USA in Vietnam because of the draft, but that would be why the numbers then are more than double what they are now. I'm sure none of them then left for better healthcare, new jobs or aggression towards the administration at the time right? Just the draft? OK.

What amazes me is how someone with as much intelligence as yourself has very little common sense. If I had the choice, I would rather have the common sense that I have than the genius levels of intelligence you like to boast regularly here.

People have ben going to Canada for years for medical care they could not afford here, it is not unusual in my experience for those with little sense to claim an abundance of common sense. They usually lack that too.

Usually but not here. And it's been proven that people who raise their voice or resort to personal attacks in arguments in an attempt to win, always lose.

I'm looking at the numbers. Sure there are always people going to Canada for health care, but why the sudden spike? More people are sicker? Or just sick of the administration?

I think if the usual administration bashers here would of posted that you would af agreed with them. That Bush sucks. That people all over the world hate our administration (not AMERICANS!!) and that now Americans are fed up with it also.

But because someone like Jordan posted you had to negate it.

This is not a personal attack, Whippersnapper, except for the Whippersnapper part, of course.

You should have seen the folks who flooded up here during your revolutionary war. They were dubbed United Empire Loyalists and supplied most of the base population that now comprises southern Ontario -- you know, little northern outposts like Toronto and Windsor and Hamilton and our nation's capital, Ottawa.

Then, in the interim, there were all the enslaved black Africans -- men, women and children -- who escaped their masters at the risk of being whipped or hobbled or castrated or hanged as an example, and rode the Northern Railroad to freedom. All men were created equal under your constitution but it took a bloody civil war, (one that no outsider interfered with, by-the-way) to begin to straighten out that little matter.

And then Vietnam. If a draft was in place today, Whippersnapper, your number might come up. If it did, you could always come north to live among us, or go to Sweden and visit with JohnnyReb. You would never be allowed back into your homeland to reunite with friends and family, except under penalty of arrest and prosecution under the UCMJ, followed by a probable five-years imprisonment. Or you could stay in the U.S.A. and be sent off to kick in doors in (Saigon) Baghdad and kill the (Yellow) towel-headed man. Or be shot down as an agitator by your National Guard on the campus of Kent State.

And now old folks in dire straights come up here by the bus load to get the medications they need to survive.

I'm Canadian. I don't have to choose between that and the rent or a pound of balogna and a loaf of bread. My doctor doesn't have to call up an HMO before he recommends that my newly-discovered cancer needs have a specialist look into it instead of prescribing the asprin the HMO is willing to pay for.

You are the archetypal ugly American. You know nothing of history despite all opportunity, and you are miserably uninformed. You know about you, are proud of the raw-boned pull yourself up by your own bootstraps attitude you have inherited, and know next to nothing of the world around you or even of your own wonderfully rich history.

When you choose to argue with Shelly, to anyone who has read beyond junior high, you come across at best as painfully naive.

You said here you haven't time for fiction...

If you haven't read the thoughts of Irving and Hawthorne and Poe and Whitman and Clemens and Crane and Ferber and Lewis and Faulkner and Steinbeck and Mailer and Vonnegut and a hundred-hundred others, you know nothing of yourself and America. If you have not read anything of Shakespeare and Dickens you know nothing of human nature. If you have not read Kipling and Churchill you know nothing of empire. If you have not read Dickinson you know nothing of romance. If you have not read Hugo and Dostoevsky you know nothing of nothing.

If you find comfort in ignorance and keeping and endorsing the company of ignorant people, then so be it.

But you are handicapped by being unaware of all that we who have seeped our intellect in that I have mentioned and more, and have lived a generation, sometimes two, beyond your narrow experience.

Perhaps I'm stamped with the ethics and social graces of a dead generation but always I addressed my elders as Mr. or Mrs. until I was given permission by them to do otherwise. I tucked in my elbows at table and I would never say "Duh" to a lady or tell her to "calm down" -- and I would accept to have my face slapped by her in return for such temerity.

In other words you are full of yourself and of it.

Of course, there were no pictures of enormous breasted women, six-legged goats, or upturned outhouses to amuse you. You need pictures.

You are a side-show barker. See the Seal boy (flippers for hands), the fat lady who needs three regular chairs to accommodate her enormous butt, the two-headed chicken, one feeds while the other reads. Right here, folks. A mere sawbuck. Photos on sale. Amaze your friends!

You appropriated Adam's "Vile" which was amusing the first couple of times it was said, and drove it into the ground.

You are a sychophant imbecile.

A fool of the first order.

The omega dog in a whithering pack of jackals.

An ant at a picnic.

A pain in the ass.

This is becoming a Sinatra song lyric.

"You are so easy to love,

So easy to idolize, All others above...

And, if you could see

your future with me

You'd be oh so easy to love."

The problem is, sucker,

you are pond scum,

And I like girls.

Yes, I like the enormous-breasted women. What man doesn't or wouldn't look.

The rest you posted is the same BS that always comes across your keyboard.

I agree the US healthcare system is broke. As long as the huge insurance and drug companies continue to buy Washington, it will continue to be this way.

This is where you are, as usual, wrong. Simply wrong. And instead of writing a book telling you you're dumb I will tell you how you're wrong.

I may not know as much as you or Shelly or all the others here who have been on this Earth as long as you have, but I know a lot. I'm sure when I get to be your age I too will know it all. Social Studies, Geography and History (World and American) were my strongest studies in school. Compared to the archetypal people of my generation I feel I'm a step above most. You keep forgetting that I am almost 50 years younger than you. Am I supposed to know as much as you of the world? I don't think so and I never claimed to be that.

You'll never see me on Jay Leno unable to point where Australia or Iraq is on a map.

When you choose to argue with Shelly, to anyone who has read beyond junior high, you come across at best as painfully naive.

Maybe this is where I am stronger than you. Shelly is a person he is not God. I'm not the type of person to bow down to someone just because they are well-educated, intelligent and successful, or an internet forum patriarch. If I think someone is wrong, I'm going to call them on it.

If you find comfort in ignorance and keeping and endorsing the company of ignorant people, then so be it.

I don't take sides, living in a black & white world regardless of the position like you. That is the epitome of ignorance.

Quote:
Perhaps I'm stamped with the ethics and social graces of a dead generation

You are, so get over it already! Dead generation? I have already told you that in real life, and in the proper situations, I have more manners than most. This is an internet forum, not a black tie dinner. You may not realize this, but all people are equal James. I wouldn't call Noreen a bitch the same way I wouldn't (and never have) my girlfriend or any other woman. You should think about that the next time you denigrate people. Just because someone is younger or ignorant doesn't mean you can throw your hypocritical etiquette book out the window.

Quote:
In other words you are full of yourself and of it.

OK we are now at the end of another one of your well written rants. Very good may I add, you spelled some words wrong, but that's OK . You indeed should of been a writer, to not have is a waste with your literary talent.

But again I feel robbed. I made a point and all I hear is how I'm a dumb ass, and the personal attacks continue to fly, but I have yet to know how I was wrong.

This is the problem with the left. Constantly giving their opinion on what's wrong, but never a reason as to why. It is the making of very poor debaters.

Let me repeat! I'm just going to use general numbers to make this easy. Seven years ago 5000 people flocked to Canada, these are normal numbers with the #1 reason, no doubt for better healthcare. But not the only reason.

Now 7 years later that number has doubled to 10,000. Are the majority of these people running due to healthcare reasons? Have we become twice as sick? Twice as fed up with our healthcare?

Or is the sudden surge due to angry Americans for diplomatic reasons (I hate bush, I hate the war).

I think it's the latter as the article and history suggests. Am I wrong? And if I am how?

Have you become Ed Greene?

I love the sectionalized responses but I can't follow all that stuff.

Can you imagine how many people are abandoning PCQ&A right now because guiseda is an idiot who posts pictures of women with enormous breasts.

He says he is recently married.

Imagine the pressure that puts on Mrs. guisuieidia.

I wonder if there are any plastic surgeons with variously sized bags of silicone ready to implant in his trailer park?

Did I spell gusiuadea wrong?

The spell checker and Google turned up nothing worth noting except that King Kong Carnival Shows was moving from Natchez to Mobile.

Then there were 35 million Americans without health insurance, today there are 44 million, but that is not the point of my post, and this thread. Whatever the reason for our people going to Canada, Britain, Australia or wherever they choose to go they have that right. The reactionary moron who started this thread had no right to denigrate them for their decision. In America, people are free to stay and free to go.

Since you apparently don't know, many older Americans emigrate all over the world. The Social Security check they receive every month would allow then to starve slowly here, but live like a king in many countries. Even in a high cost of living country like Canada, the ability to not spend most of that SS check on medicine and doctors makes a big difference. Who the hell is he to call them undesirable?

Quote:
Canada gets U.S. haters, Boosh haters, cowards, socialists, misfits, and the diversity/multi-culturalism lovers.

Lots of code words there, but they are nothing but an old fashioned appeal to bigotry. He would have thrown in a bunch more words, if he thought he could get away with them. If that is your idea of a role model and hero, you are welcome to him.

If anyone is unfit to breath our free air, it is the knee jerk bigots who cheapen our society. There was a time, yesterday for me, ancient history for you, when if anyone tried to leave Germany, they were arrested and sent to the concentration camps. Bush and his cronies have worked hard to narrow our freedoms, but it has not gotten that bad yet. It's really too ambitious to accomplish with a two term limit.

Sadly, we have those in our country who place a high value on their freedom, but not on anyone else's freedom. Too many of us have fought for that freedom, to allow the mental midgets to barter it away. So you bet I will insult those who would threaten our freedom and way of life through ignorance or willfulness, in this forum or to their face.

I don't think a 26% rise in uninsured Americans would result in an 100% rise in US immigrants to Canada, and that is just Canada.

I don't know where you got that idea. I too don't agree with those code words. It sounds like they come from an UN-American mouth.

It seems that your point of this thread is to target Jordan's ignorance. Which is admirable. Mine was to just point out that they're not all, or the majority for that matter, going to Canada for healthcare.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, and it is obvious there is something personal between you two, but from my POV, you really need to be a bit more cautious throwing the "You know nothing of history despite all opportunity, and you are miserably uninformed." accusation around, to anyone.
It also applies to you more often than you apparently know.

Those loyalists who fled north to what was to become Canada brought their slaves with them, and that wasn't a big deal to British North America until many years later. You remember, those slaves introduced into North America by Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and yes, even British ships. Not just merchant ships, but also government ships, and carrying not just African slaves, but also Irish slaves, thanks to Elizabeth I and later Cromwell.

British Canada and Britain itself did outlaw slavery before the US did, to their credit. But they never quite managed to draw the line at not accepting bales of cotton from the American south, grown with slave labor. Even during the American Civil War, Britain knew which side to support, as they realized the importance of "King Cotton" to English mills. That favoring of the Confederacy extended somewhat to Canada, as the treatment of the St. Albans raiders and Confederate attempts to rescue POWs by traveling through Canada shows. Minor points? Maybe, nevertheless all part of the history you profess to know so well.
So much for your "one that no outsider interfered with, by-the-way" statement.

Your "know next to nothing of the world around you" accusation can also apply equally to you. Calling others "morons" or "imbeciles" or wondering if someone is intelligent enough to warrant their getting a vote (how regressive is that?), and lecturing others about what they don't know, while booting a few essential facts yourself is a constant source of amusement.

Hi, No One.

Of course those Loyalists who owned slaves brought them along. Britain did not outlaw slavery until early into the following century. Sometime during in the 1830's, I believe -- I'm not about to look it up.

And Britain did not support the South during your Civil War. She, and other European powers ran the blockade. Imposing the "paper" blockade early in the war was a tactical error on President Lincoln's part because it gave international legitimacy to the South's claim that it was an independent nation. Under international law he needed only to have closed those ports to trade. But the North then put every boat that could carry a gun into service (cops on the block) and the blockade succeeded, obviously -- Georgia and the Carolinas and Florida, etc. are still part of the Union.

Imperial Russia flirted briefly with recognizing the Confederacy, but thought better of it.

I'll overlook the fact that your post addressed mine, at best, obliquely. I said nothing that was historically questionable. But even though you used your prejudice to read between the lines, I'm happy that I bring you a bit of amusement.

I live to entertain and, along the way, should a self-important, pedantic ass like you come to learn a thing or two -- that's a bonus.

Bullshit!

I've had two surgeries performed recently (within the past ten years). One to remove a tumor from my chest (suspected male breast cancer) and another to remove a suspect mole from, ahem... a sensitive place.

Both were done in timely fashion. Within ten days of referral by my personal physician to a surgeon, I was on the table and I had the results from the lab before I was given my release from the hospital.

Just three months ago I popped a tendon in my hand (thumb forefinger) and an infection developed. I was given outpatient intravenous anti-biotic treatments with a new wick to draw off the infection each 24 hours. I had a standing appointment at the hospital each evening during this procedure and, although it was sometimes painful to endure, the doctors and nurses who attended me were pros and the experience refreshed my faith in human nature and the system.

I could tell a similar story of the way my mother was treated after having two knee replacements and much later during and following a heart attack. She had extensive physiotherapy after the first two incidents and wonderful psychotherapy dealing with the depression that comes after heart failure in the second.

She died many years later, but c'est la vie.

Or I could talk about my dad who lay semi-comatose for three years in Ste. Anne de Bellevue Veterans Hospital, one of the best facilities in the world for people who have served. Kilted pipers walked the wards on weekends and my father cried as did I.

A good thing about socialized medicine is that the rich will think that they will die sooner and suffer more because they will be treated like the rest of us.

Indeed, Bullshit. It's based on urgency, not how much money you have. Someone who is going to die TODAY gets his heart surgery before someone deteriorating with a heart murmur. Someone with a very dangerous tumour is going to get his surgery before Mrs. Melanomaface who wants to get a mole removed. Rich people don't get to jump the queue.

This is why we must continue to oppose a "two tiered" health care system. Also, where do you think the best surgeons are going to want to work? Spending long hours at the general hospital where the peasants go?

You don't have to spend your savings to get a broken arm fixed here either.

It all sounds unbelievable. The conservatives like to point out that the majority of Americans have insurance. Or even good insurance.

Big deal.

After insurance paid for my daughters birth last February and all the doctor visits that go with it, my part of the bill is still THOUSANDS.

There are millions of Americans paying thousands of dollars for insurance and when something happens they end up losing everything paying the medical bills that insurance doesn't pay for.

I suspect that any news (myths) we hear about the negative side of socialized medicine is concocted by the right.

Even if some of them are true. I believe the positives far outweigh the negatives. I would gladly wait in line for 3 hours with a broken arm, if it all was free. Well, if they give me some drugs while I'm waiting at least!

Waiting that long in an ER doesn't sound much different from our hospitals. Every time I've been to the ER, it's a guarantee I'm in the hospital for hours.

My sister had to spend a month in London hospital in the care of specialists at the end of her pregnancy, due to complications and the risk of hemorrhage. When the baby was close to done, it was born surgically by cesarean section. That would have had disastrous financial effects if not for our health care system. A private hospital room for a month, even before surgery.

Depending on what hospital you go to, you may indeed have to wait hours in the emergency room, depending on how urgently you are bleeding to death. (which would take precedence over a broken arm, for example) In the cities, wait times are longer. In a town, you might walk right in off the street and get instant attention.

While they don't have to be scared to administer narcotics here, you would not get them until a doctor has seen you, though. (for safety reasons)

Best surgeons, Mike? The most grasping and greedy surgeons, perhaps. There are plenty of fine doctors who are content and eager to ply their invaluable trade within an equitable system that provides a generous living for themselves and their family. Thankfully, for they and us, that is one place where money doesn't talk and everybody walks.

The pull yourself up by your own bootstraps mentality that pervades the American psyche served them well when they were settling a hostile frontier, but decent health care is not a privilege in a society that is able to provide it, it is a right.

My ex-boss came to the land of the free, and worked there for seven years. And made big dollars. And married an American (a lovely lady, I might add).

But as soon as his kids were of school age he high-tailed it back to Australia as fast as he could, even at a considerable pay cut. Go figure.

Those are lame reasons.

There are private schools here. And there are also school shootings in Australia. These nut jobs are not just confined to the US they're all over the world.

Also the chance of getting shot at school in the US is VERY slim.

I've never heard of one here. There was one nutcase who wandered into a schoolyard, doused a young boy with petrol and set him alight, 8 years ago.

But many times higher than here.

Quality of education was also an issue in their minds. I have no idea if that's valid, but it was certainly a factor to them.

It's still August 5th here, that won't happen until tomorrow.

You don't know Newark, NJ. I used to work there long ago, it was a jungle then and it has not gotten any better. It sounds like gang activity, but I don't know enough details to say for certain.

Oh spare us this myth that this gun toting nation leads the world in murder because it doesn't!

There were 16,692 murders in the USA in 2005. With that said, I still am not afraid to walk the streets. Most people who are murdered are murdered by people they know. So I should be more afraid of my peers than the strangers walking down the street with me.

The story you linked didn't make national news because it is, just another murder. I'm sure the local news may of covered it, but even then, every murder isn't reported. Maybe because you're right it is too common place.

If the national news media reported on every single one of the 16,692 murderers in 2005, the news would sound about as lurid as the liberal media around the world beating to death their reporting on every single bomb and death in Iraq.

I'm still waiting for you to substantiate your fallacious claim that school shootings happen in Australia. Gun murders here are so uncommon that American ones make the news, yet the US press can't even keep up with their own. Even allowing for the population difference, that's noteworthy.

And I never said the US leads the world. As you well know.

But in 1994 at least, they did. 7 times the rate here. This is all gun deaths, murder, suicide and accidental.

http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=6166

And the rates are higher in pro-gun states

http://www.vpc.org/press/0602rank.htm

And here's some information about the effects of gun culture on life expectancy and insurance premiums in the US

http://www.allbusiness.com/finance-insurance/insurance-carriers-related-activities/523667-1.html

Figure 2 (which isn't actually there, unfortunately, but the text summarises it) compares the crude firearm homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants in countries that have a population in excess of 3.8 million and a GDP per capita, adjusted for purchasing power, in excess of $20,000 (World Health Organization, 2002). The U.S. rate dwarfs the rate of any other industrialized country. It is 5.5 times the next highest rate (Italy). Several European countries have a firearm homicide rate that is insignificant: only 45 firearm homicides were reported in the United Kingdom, 15 in Denmark, 10 in Norway, and 7 in Ireland. While the United States experienced 10,801 firearm homicides, the European Union, with a total population of over 376 million in 2000, only recorded 1,260 homicides. Only 22 firearm homicides occurred in Japan (population: 127 million), a country where it has never been possible for most individuals to acquire a handgun. Less than 50 handguns are present in Japan; they are reserved to athletes participating in international shooting competitions (United Nations on Crime Prevention and Crime Justice, 1999).

I didn't know you asked me to. I also didn't know you were that naive. I just quickly googled it and found 2 Australian school shootings, which even it is 2, is enough to say that a kid has got shot in an Australian school. Never say never.

You have enough murders that your nightly news can report a new one every night. Hearing that would get old.

Umm no we didn't. I was talking about murder, just murder. Here you turn this into an anti-gun tirade.

Save it, I'm with you. I'm anti-gun also. And I've seen "Bowling for Columbine". Japan sounds like a wonderful country.

OK, I missed one (not two, one shooting with two victims).

That's not quite true, it's about three nights out of four, nationwide, and there has been a statistically significant downward trend in the incidence of homicide in Australia over the 17 year period, 1990-2006.

A cop was shot and killed here a couple of weeks ago. It was front page Australia-wide, and in Brisbane it was front page for five days. That's a pretty good indication of comparative frequency.

Interesting, seeing I've just seen you complaining in another thread about people putting words in your mouth.

I don't get it. Do I have to Google it again? Are still you saying that no one has ever got shot in a school? Besides what you commented on?

You're right, it isn't quite true. Your average murder deaths between 1996 and 2005 are 344 per year. Assuming you have nightly news every night. That's almost correct. 21 murders shy of a whole year. So even at 344 if you have to report on American murders also, that's pretty sad. Unless it's the high profile ones then I can understand those making worldwide news.

Has sense of humor been murdered in Australia also? Notice how I almost copied your phrase before word for word? Notice the smiley at the end?

During my military career I lived in, and visited many foreign countries, however none that I would care to take up residence in. Never been to Australia,to old now to visit, and maybe like it .

That says more about the American understanding of what constitutes a good beer than anything else.

Actually Bud is brewed all over the world, like Heineken. Hopefully some of it is better than the US version.

From Wikipedia:-

Anheuser-Busch has a market share in the United States of about 50% for all beers sold. The company's 2005 annual report cites figures which demonstrate Budweiser brands are proving to be quite successful in three markets outside of the U.S.:

* in Canada, where Labatt Brewing Company brews and packages Budweiser and Bud Light for the Canadian market; Budweiser is one of the country's most popular bottled beers behind Labatt and Molson.

* in the United Kingdom Anheuser-Busch leases the Stag Brewery in Mortlake.

Budweiser is also widely available in Mexico due to Anheuser-Busch's half-ownership of Grupo Modelo, through which Budweiser and Bud Light (introduced in 1982) are distributed. In Ireland, Budweiser is one of the leading lager brands; it is brewed, marketed, and sold by Guinness. Budweiser is also available in Italy, Brasil,Argentina, Finland and Russia because of partnerships Anheuser-Busch has with major brewers there.

Budweiser was recently launched in India, where it's slowly gaining marketshare by being a much-sought after alternative to the leading Kingfisher, Fosters and Royal Challenge.

I'm surprised that it's gaining much foothold in the UK, as most of the world's great ales are brewed there, and even middling ales have more character than even the better lagers. But you're right about German lagers.

I'm a serious (but not heavy), beer drinker - one small bottle a day. I'm always looking for different beers, and I have over 200 empties from all over the world. The Budweiser that we get here is categorically the most uninteresting beer I have ever tasted.

With all the corn going into our gas tanks, you may have to switch to toast.

The queen with her finger up her nose should give you a clue to what the beans are. They're better known as clunkers, boogers or snot.

Here is a little rhyme I remember as a kid:

The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out. The worms play peaknuckle on your snout. Then out of your nose comes a nice cream spread. You slap it down on a stale piece of bread.

Sorry, I don't remember the rest.

Quite Vile!

You shouldn't taunt a "frustrated" man like that James. You never know if he will blow his kettle and go after the dog next.

Yes but it should work now.

I emailed them asking why it stopped working.
They said it was because of the bickering going on in this thread.
So I asked if I asked them to calm down and fight fair would they put the link back up.

They said sure.

Not cold enough for me according to what James posted. If I had my way I'd live somewhere that never got warmer than about 22°C (72°F) tops. I like it best between about 45°F and 65°F (7°C and 18°C).

That's my climate too, though I would prefer the outdoor temperature to not exceed 60F (cooler will do... I like it so the air is crisp, and I have to wear a light jacket). Fall weather suits me best.

It's too hot for me right now, so I skulk in my dimly lit dungeon office, where the cold, conditioned air falls.
