"No Time to Quit"

I don't know in what parts of the country this commercial is airing. Nor do I know how long it's been on TV as I don't watch much TV.

But I just want everyone to see it.

Anyone going to argue with him?

Quote:
And to top it off these cynical and relentless neocon bastards have coupled this with gut-wrenching emotional blackmail -- a TV ad in which a broken-bodied young vet begs, as he attempts to limp back into a shattered semblance of his former life, that his sacrifice not be in vain. He pleads that should the battle be discontinued it would be to the dishonor of all. All this against a background of the second airliner approaching the smoking ruin of the World Trade Center buildings. Leni Riefenstahl and Joseph Goebbels must be smiling in their graves.

Anyone going to argue with him?
One of the usual suspects already has.

Your words = your thoughts. If you don't want to stand behind them, don't write them in the first place.

Here are some more words, from a young 2nd lieutenant's MySpace page about why he joined the Army:

"Why I Joined:
This question has been asked of me so many times in so many different contexts that I thought it would be best if I wrote my reasons for joining the Army on my page for all to see. First, the more accurate question is why I volunteered to go to Iraq. After all, I joined the Army a week after we declared war on Saddam's government with the intention of going to Iraq. Now, after years of training and preparation, I am finally here.
Much has changed in the last three years. The criminal Ba'ath regime has been replaced by an insurgency fueled by Iraq's neighbors who hope to partition Iraq for their own ends. This is coupled with the ever present transnational militant Islamist movement which has seized upon Iraq as the greatest way to kill Americans, along with anyone else they happen to be standing near. What was once a paralyzed state of fear is now the staging ground for one of the largest transformations of power and ideology the Middle East has experienced since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Thanks to Iran, Syria, and other enlightened local actors, this transformation will be plagued by interregional hatred and genocide. And I am now in the center of this.

Is this why I joined? Yes. Much has been said about America's intentions in overthrowing Saddam Hussein and seeking to establish a new state based upon political representation and individual rights. Many have framed the paradigm through which they view the conflict around one-word explanations such as "oil" or "terrorism," favoring the one which best serves their political persuasion. I did the same thing, and anyone who knew me before I joined knows that I am quite aware and at times sympathetic to the arguments against the war in Iraq.

If you think the only way a person could bring themselves to volunteer for this war is through sheer desperation or blind obedience then consider me the exception (though there are countless like me). I joined the fight because it occurred to me that many modern day "humanists" who claim to possess a genuine concern for human beings throughout the world are in fact quite content to allow their fellow "global citizens" to suffer under the most hideous state apparatuses and conditions. Their excuses used to be my excuses. When asked why we shouldn't confront the Ba'ath party, the Taliban or the various other tyrannies throughout this world, my answers would allude to vague notions of cultural tolerance (forcing women to wear a veil and stay indoors is such a quaint cultural tradition), the sanctity of national sovereignty (how eager we internationalists are to throw up borders to defend dictatorships!) or even a creeping suspicion of America's intentions. When all else failed, I would retreat to my fragile moral ecosystem that years of living in peace and liberty had provided me.

I would write off war because civilian casualties were guaranteed, or temporary alliances with illiberal forces would be made, or tank fuel was toxic for the environment. My fellow "humanists" and I would relish contently in our self righteous declaration of opposition against all military campaigns against dictatorships, congratulating one another for refusing to taint that aforementioned fragile moral ecosystem that many still cradle with all the revolutionary tenacity of the members of Rage Against the Machine and Greenday. Others would point to America's historical support of Saddam Hussein, sighting it as hypocritical that we would now vilify him as a thug and a tyrant. Upon explaining that we did so to ward off the fiercely Islamist Iran, which was correctly identified as the greater threat at the time, eyes are rolled and hypocrisy is declared. Forgetting that America sided with Stalin to defeat Hitler, who was promptly confronted once the Nazis were destroyed, America's initial engagement with Saddam and other regional actors is identified as the ultimate argument against America's moral crusade. And maybe it is.

Maybe the reality of politics makes all political action inherently crude and immoral. Or maybe it is these adventures in philosophical masturbation that prevent people from ever taking any kind of effective action against men like Saddam Hussein. One thing is for certain, as disagreeable or as confusing as my decision to enter the fray may be, consider what peace vigils against genocide have accomplished lately. Consider that there are 19 year old soldiers from the Midwest who have never touched a college campus or a protest who have done more to uphold the universal legitimacy of representative government and individual rights by placing themselves between Iraqi voting lines and homicidal religious fanatics. Often times it is less about how clean your actions are and more about how pure your intentions are.

So that is why I joined. In the time it took for you to read this explanation, innocent people your age have suffered under the crushing misery of tyranny. Every tool of philosophical advancement and communication that we use to develop our opinions about this war are denied to countless human beings on this planet, many of whom live under the regimes that have, in my opinion, been legitimately targeted for destruction. Some have allowed their resentment of the President to stir silent applause for setbacks in Iraq. Others have ironically decried the war because it has tied up our forces and prevented them from confronting criminal regimes in Sudan, Uganda, and elsewhere. I simply decided that the time for candid discussions of the oppressed was over, and I joined. In digesting this posting, please remember that America's commitment to overthrow Saddam Hussein and his sons existed before the current administration and would exist into our future children's lives had we not acted.

Please remember that the problems that plague Iraq today were set in motion centuries ago and were up until now held back by the most cruel of cages. Don't forget that human beings have a responsibility to one another and that Americans will always have a responsibility to the oppressed. Don't overlook the obvious reasons to disagree with the war but don't cheapen the moral aspects either. Assisting a formerly oppressed population in converting their torn society into a plural, democratic one is dangerous and difficult business, especially when being attacked and sabotaged from literally every direction.

So if you have anything to say to me at the end of this reading, let it at least include "Good Luck" Mark Daily"

Pay close attention to his comment about "adventures in philosophical masturbation", your preferred course of action.

2LT Daily's preferred course of action: "...pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

Seems there are damn few like him around anymore, certainly none around here.

2LT Daily did pay the ultimate price, he was killed in Mosul last winter.

Then perhaps you should seek more congenial company. There are no bad people here. Everyone here, I have found, is well intentioned and most are more than sufficiently informed. We may disagree on process but all aim for the same result.

You are wont to stick your superior nose in here every month or so with a snide comment, but you are unwilling to work the trenches.

So, piss off.

And I enjoy to masturbate but somehow philosophy never entered the equation.

"Wont" is a perfectly correct word. As used in that sentence it is not a contraction for "will not".

I like this one better:

I've guess I've always just been accustomed to the contraction definition of the word.

I'm hurt that I've never heard of wont before. It's puzzling me.

Thanks for the lesson Jim.

You've probably heard the word used before but as it's pronounced as "want", at least around here", you probably thought it was just another meaning of the word "want". Only when I saw it in print did I realize "wont" is a distinct word.

I never heard it pronounced want. Wont was used frequently by Shakespeare.

Not to be confused with the contraction for will not, it must like all contractions includes an apostrophe, as won't, and is pronounced wount

Here in the mid-west we talk funny. And those mid-westerners who use "wont" correctly talk even funnier.

Jim.

Edit: Pronunciations from Dictionary.com

wont (wawnt, wohnt, wuhnt)

want (wont, wawnt)

Clearly some overlap.

Yes. I'll argue with him. We were not attacked by Saddam Hussein.

He should never have lost his legs in Iraq. If he was destined to lose his legs, it should have been in Afghanistan or bordering Pakistan pursuing bin Laden.

He can personally thank George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Wolfowitz, among others, for his injuries in Iraq.

Unless you read it elsewhere, how do you know he sustained his injuries in Iraq?

Yes, I will.

That is a patronizing commercial made in political desperation. It does not celebrate the courage and sacrifice of our men at arms. It uses them for the political gain of the people who sent them into hell for reasons that did not exist, and a cause that could not be won.

Not one Iraqi was on the planes that attacked us on 9/11. They were mainly Saudis. bin Laden never had any foothold in Iraq. He hated Saddam as a heretic, and Saddam had no use for bin Laden. Our enemy was bin Laden and his Al Qaeda thugs. As a result of our Iraq diversion bin Laden is still alive, and Al Qaeda is stronger than ever because our Iraq involvement has driven every Muslim fanatic to them as supporters, fighters, or suicide bombers. We swelled their ranks from a few hundred to thousands. In the process we even turned moderate Muslims against us.

One that can not see beyond a slick commercial to the ugly truth it attempts to camouflage is devoid of any ability to think rationally.

Shelly

Shelly did not, and would not, forward that argument, you adolescent obtuse excuse for an intellect.

I meant, I meant, I meant... Are we supposed to read your mind? And if we are unable to penetrate the shallowness of your thinking without further expansion on your part, should you bite off our foolish heads?

If anyone is full of shit here, Alex, it is you.

You challenge us with a question that should not have been asked. That brave man should have been left in peace to deal with the hard reality that faces him. Even had he volunteered that testimony, decent persons would have rejected it for use as a political tool.

Tonight you are a child.

How do you know? Allyn said he would. And there are many people out there that would. I wanted to test the waters here to see who would. If there was an Iraq war veteran who was a member here and posted pro-war posts daily you wouldn't give him a dose of your usual garbage?

Quote:

Right, sure. How many people here have to point out your childish behavior you posses daily in phrases such as this before you shape up? I would roll in a hole and die if I behaved and talked like you do to people. Which is quite sad since you are the hypocritical preacher of manners. After Chewy is done with "How to Win Friends and Influence People" I suggest you take a stab at at. If you already have, read it again.

No I thought the question was clear.

Oh that's right, your attempt again to censure my questions. I forgot. I'll start to PM with every question before I ask it to see if you approve. Deal?

He was awarded The Purple Heart for his leg. I have two.

When I went into the Army at 17, I was "RA" (Regular (volunteer) Army.

When I left, I knew if the Army wanted me back, they'd have to take me as a "CR" (caught running).

Yes, I spoke to that ad in an earlier post.

I would not argue with that man -- his feelings are genuine and well-earned.

He was crippled in a cause in which he believed, and he does not wish his sacrifice to be in vain.

From that man's perspective, his argument is not only valid but must be paid great respect.

I do, instead, argue with the manipulative devils who use such legitimate sentiment to forward their political agenda. The video turned my stomach. If America buys one more time this rotten bill of neocon goods and allows the travesty of Iraq to metastasize...

I'm at a loss for words...

I hope that America has not lost its mind.

Oh my god. I am speechless. I had to read your post like 3 times to make sure I was understanding it correctly. Because we all know how I frequently speed read posts and mis-construe things.

I whole heartedly agree with everything you say. I can't believe this. Mark this day on the calendar!

I wouldn't change a word of it. I am shocked that something so nice came out of you. I was expecting the total opposite from you. Something to the effect that you would slap this kid upside his head and tell him he's an idiot.

Everything you said is exactly how I feel about the commercial. Bravo!

And I'm not being smart here, I'm serious.

Just who in the hell do you think you are?

Jesus f'n Christ, you really are a self-important little prick, aren't you.

You are so g'damned full of yourself.

You put words in others mouths, ascribe motivation, derive consequence.

You play devil's advocate to subject matter and admit to it as if it is a virtue. No, no, Adam -- it is an insult. Your excuse is you wish to draw us out.

Out of what, Whippersnapper? Most of us here are old folks who have been drawn out of our socks so often they are pulled well up above our knees. Mine are binding in the crotch. Everything that you are about to experience we have experienced. We are smarter than you, more observant than you, wiser than you, better read than you, and more respectful than you.

You treat others here with about as much regard as we would treat an experiment in a Petri dish -- and you have the nerve combined with ignorance to admit to it.

Dispute me, refute me, agree or disagree with me, you little bastard, but don't ever again patronize me.

I recall Shelly saying that speaking with you, at times, is like speaking with a cantaloupe. If I were you I would take that as a compliment.

You know James perhaps I'm wrong but come tomorrow morning I think you'll be posting your "I'm sorry" again post that you have done in the past after drinking a few brews. Sorry doesn't cut it after a couple times, than it means nothing. It's really a shame with some of the BS post you make and than it's not until the next day you realize you said too much! Drinking is no excuse!

I truly enjoy some of your post James. I even enjoy you being here, but I think you have a serious problem with wanting to beat up on Adam so much. I don't see that happening with anyone else like I do with him. So much of what you spew is simply uncalled for James.

At times I really think you are a bully that likes to throw your weight around with the younger generation. You've been around the block a few times, so what! That doesn't give you the right to be a complete ass! I don't know what you feel you are accomplishing when you speak to Adam as you do. I guess it's because most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. It can make them feel big and powerful. Usually a bully has difficulty making friends, and sometimes they do gain a certain level of popularity and peer status for their actions, sadly. Is that what you’re after, James?

Why don't you try a different approach, is it too much to ask of you to try and set a good example? I think maybe it is....

Gee whiz, we were taught to respect our elders, it's a little hard to do when respect is something you get when you give it. Try giving some James, you may be surprised the respect you'll get in return.

Ok, I'm done now.

It's for sure that regardless of James' state of sobriety, either now or in the morning, he will be seeing double - just like the rest of us. (Post 16 and 17)

Adam is far from "Mr. Innocent". If you have faithfully followed all of Adam's posts in the OT forum, you are well aware of this. But I don't think you have. In my opinion, Adam richly deserves almost 100% of the replies he gets from James.

Myself, I've all but given up on Adam. I used to think he had some potential but for the life of me I can't remember why I thought that.

Jim.

Hi Jim, *waves* I didn't say Adam was innocent. Hell none of us are innocent, I'm sure. We all have our moments. No, I don't follow all of Adam's post but I have been around for awhile and have seen enough to know that I have NEVER seen Adam talk to anyone the way James does. The bad mouth, the name calling, and such. No Jim, I truly haven't.

You know it's hard to read people over these silly little machines, no eye contact, or no voice inflection sure doesn't help. I have read Adam's post and haven't understood at times why James gets so out of control. Maybe I'm reading Adam differently at times than some of you. However, with that being said, we can make no mistake with James' post can we now? James is flat out belligerent at times, and many times I feel it is absolutely uncalled for.

No I do NOT believe Adam deserves that and so I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I still firmly believe that people tend to forget there is a live human behind these monitors at times. Perhaps I'm wrong but I don't believe I am or maybe it's wishful thinking on my part that if James was sitting in a bar having a drink or two and conversation with some guy he wouldn't speak to him in this manner. Again I could be wrong and if so I would bet the house on it he'd go home many a night with a couple black eyes if he does do so.

~~~~
Adam, no thank you necessary just calling it like I see it.
Edit: On that note I'm going to say "Goodnight", hope you all have a good day tomorrow/today.
You and your bleeding heart affection for ablib is truly nauseating Jan. If you haven't seen ablib's past name calling then it is only because you refuse to see it. You only need to look through the past threads to see his guilty hands. You only post here once in a while so I don't know if you actually read all the OT posts but if you actually took the time to read his posts you'd realize why James gives him the wedgies that he he richly deserves.
You have this tendency to place people like ablib up on a pedestal and anytime anyone shatters that image you come squawking in like some protective mother hen. I should really not bother posting to you because for the most part, I have no absolutely no use for people like yourself that will blindly stick up for someone just because they hold a warm spot in your heart for some unknown reason. Most of this has probably gone right over your head anyway. I'm fed up with your long winded posts.
You are one of the biggest hypocrites on this board. You are also one of the biggest horse's ass here. Not to mention a suck ass. Anyone that you have the slightest problem with, you start name calling and bad mouthing, but to others you think may help you on occasion, you lay the butter on thick.
The sad thing is, you can be very helpful with your computer knowledge, but your attitude to some members is deplorable. Surely you don't act this way around co-workers, so why act this way around us. You go too far out of your way to cause trouble, then claim you do not. We know better.
Many here know you have a problem with me and because of that I have made it a point for a while not to reply to you. Until now. So let it out and show us again what a rant really looks like.
I should really not bother posting to you because for the most part, I have no absolutely no use for people like yourself that will blindly stick up for someone just because they hold a warm spot in your heart for some unknown reason. Most of this has probably gone right over your head anyway. I'm fed up with your long winded posts.
You may respect yourself more should you keep your childlike opinions to yourself until having learned more about how to browbeat effectively.
You seem jealous because no one will put you on a pedestal. Try to be a gentleman for once and demonstrate to be a classy character as Adam has, and maybe, just maybe one day you too may some day set up there with him.
If you have faithfully followed all of Adam's posts in the OT forum, you are well aware of this.
I'm one who faithfully follows all of them. You will never see me pull a James or Chewy type behavior. If you think that's excusable then I'm sorry for you. I never demean people for the way they think, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and shouldn't be flamed for it. The only true troll in my memory is Ryan.
I try to bring new ideas and topics, add to the forum if you will, without any intention of spurring the hate speech that sometimes evolves. I apologize when I am wrong, or if I have offended anyone and am not afraid to admit it. If I feel I have been beaten in debate, I have no problems conceding and admitting to that person that "they are right". It's called being sure of oneself, confident, strong. In my opinion that's an admirable quality. I'm not being arrogant either. There's a difference between arrogance and being sure of yourself.
Quote:
In my opinion, Adam richly deserves almost 100% of the replies he gets from James.
As a sane person I highly doubt that. Even though they are typed words you can tell they are words of a raised voice. Anyone who feels the need to raise their voice, resort to namecalling or vulgarities to get a point across, even if they are right, are in the wrong.
Quote:
I used to think he had some potential but for the life of me I can't remember why I thought that.
Potential? Potential for what?
Aww don't be like that. I still like you. When I said that I would go out to Wal-Mart buy a CD mailer, a CD-R, postage, take the time to download IE7, burn that small file to a 700MB disc just so you don't have to download it, I meant it. Just because I'm that kind of guy.
I still would.
Adam, I gotta get a life and stop ripping into you. But you make it so bloody easy (you almost beg for a wedgie), and I'm registered with Satan as a card-carrying bully and have to follow the scent of prey or else face a sentence of eternal damnation.
But I'll restrain myself here. This is too easy.
Although this needs to be said, or I'll choke on it -- you are pathetic.
I'm back, Jan, and I do not apologize to your smarmy friend, whom I notice is once again performing his well-practiced toe-in-the-sand imitation of an innocent and bullied little girl.
If someone stepped up to you and said: "Hey, what a pleasant surprise, Jan! You took the words right out of my mouth, girl. Who would ever have suspected you were capable of such insight?! Wow! Congrats, Sweetie, on being almost as smart as me!" How would you respond?
But I have no quarrel with you, Love, and I hope, beyond the criticism, you have none with me.
Enough said...
And I'm back too. *smiles*
James, I truly didn't expect an apology. Especially since I mentioned you would be back this morning giving us your "I'm sorry" post. You had to prove me wrong, men are like that! I suppose deep down I was only hoping.
As for as your question James, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have responded in the way that you had done. I'm too laid back and I don't get my panties in a twist that easily. In fairness to you, to answer your question, I probably would have giggled, turned slowly and walked away, swaying my hips seductively of course. That would have gotten to my friend a whole lot worse. *evil grin*
James let me tell you something please. My folks are both gone now sadly but I can remember my dad telling me "If someone throws you the ball you don't have to catch it." Remembering that you don't have to catch the ball is a very effective way to reduce stress in your life. James, most of us get balls thrown at us many times each day. If I caught all the balls thrown in my direction I would go crazy and I suspect that you would too! *winks*
Quote:
Nope, no quarrel with you either my dear, I don't work that way. *smiles* Have a good one James, enjoy your day. I think as soon as the stores are open I'm going shopping, have an early lunch and a couple cocktails. Well it is Friday!
Edit: Mornin' Bob! *big smile* Hey liked your links, got a laugh outta me. Unfortunately that's a bit bittersweet to say the least. I'm sure you know what I mean.
It amazes me how you interpret things. Because it's not that at all. When I describe who I am and what my intentions are here they are genuine. It's how I am in real life. Needless to say, it's clear to all in your antics what you bring to the table.
This is what is getting your undies in a bunch?! My god James you are supposed to be this great intellect that has been around the block a few times, can show me a thing or two, knows of things I haven't lived yet etc...
How can you be so obtuse? You know damn well that there are thousands of anti-war people out there just like you who would think nothing of telling this kid to his face that he lost his legs for nothing. I'm not that cruel, and I thought that you would be, and I was wrong. It's a freaking compliment James. You do have a heart. My respect for you soared when you typed that, then you pull out your usual drunken hazen thought process as real cognitive thought. You desperately need to lay off the booze, it's clearly affecting your brain. I meant no ill will by that post, and smart-ness had nothing to do with it.
Doctors tell me it's affecting my liver. My brain is still in pretty good shape considering the punishment I induce.
"you pull out your usual drunken hazen thought process as real cognitive thought."
If I were a sixth-grade teacher and you had submitted that sentence to me for consideration I would have graded you an F, Whippersnapper. First of all, use your spellchecker. And the words "hazen" and "real" are superfluous (one of them is invented) and drain power from your insult. You would have better said, "You pull out your usual drunken thoughts as cognitive." Even that is clumsy, but it's the best I can do editing such poor material.
Here is the way it works, Alex, if you wish your good sentiment to be received graciously, you say to the person you intend to compliment, "Thank you for reflecting my opinion." There is no need to add that you consider the person you are complementing a fool who amazes you with a momentary and unusual brush with sagacity.
You are an engaging guy, Whippersnapper, but there is something missing -- both oars are not always in the water. You are prolific, but so is a two-year-old. You are inquisitive, but so is a four-year old. You are opinionated but so is a twelve-year-old. Sometimes you are like an old guy who gets out of bed at three in the morning and pees in the closet.
Why? You're my mentor at this! I learned from the best! I'm sick and tired of you pointing out my flaws when you're guilty of the same. The problem is, I'm not ignorant enough to fill you in on it so you have no idea, or you're just in denial. I'm fully aware of mine because you dutifully point them out like a broken record, EVERY DAY!!
EdGreene style baby!
Quote:
Jesus f'n Christ, you really are a self-important little prick, aren't you.
Nope not at all. I'm just the opposite. This is another example of you:
Quote:
You put words in others mouths, ascribe motivation, derive consequence.
Explaining yourself again? Are you going to deny it?
Quote:
You play devil's advocate to subject matter and admit to it as if it is a virtue.
And again
Quote:
Your excuse is you wish to draw us out.
My excuse is to start a reasoned discussion by all with little or no personal attacks. This thread was just that until you opened your mouth. This is an Internet Forum in case you didn’t know. If someone doesn’t like the subject or thread then they don’t have to comment on it. They can choose to pass it up for the next thread. And if they can't say anything constructive on the subject matter, perhaps they definitely should pass on to the next thread.
Quote:
Most of us here are old folks who have been drawn out of our socks so often they are pulled well up above our knees. Mine are binding in the crotch.
Then I would suggest you draw yourself away from online discussion.
Quote:
Everything that you are about to experience we have experienced.
I don’t doubt you there.
Quote:
We are smarter than you
“Smart” is relative. Smarter than what? At what? I guarantee you don’t have the intellect, patience, mannerisms, skill, and demeanor to do my job. And at the same time I do not dispute that your knowledge of politics and history far excel mine.
Quote:
more observant than you
I’m going to disagree with you there. Observant is part of my job. By being observant is how I hire the people that I do. I can spot a phony a mile away. I can read people like that. That 6th sense I have almost fades online, because it is so much harder to read people through typed text. I can say with certainty that my brain is a lot more observant than one who has had 10 too many Molson's.
Quote:
better read than you
Don’t disagree with you there. Give it time, I like to read, it’s not like I hate books, I love books. So you have to give me that credit. If reading paid the bills then I would quit now and read all day. However a lot of times I can spend all day in a library or bookstore, I still do that about 2 days a month. Sometimes I buy one. But mostly management books, financial books, self-help, other non-fiction (Bill O'Reilly ). I apologize it's not the fiction you desire that I get lost in, but my choice in books is more catered to my interests and my career. Which is all I have time for now.
Quote:
and more respectful than you.
You’re a hypocrite when it comes to respect. It's kind of hard getting respect out of people when you treat them the way you do.
Quote:
You treat others here with about as much regard as we would treat an experiment in a Petri dish
Do you read the words that you type? How many times does someone have to speak up and voice opposition to the stuff you say every day before you get a hint? People are people. I don’t care how smart, old, observant someone is, respect should be given towards all. True George Bush is wasted, but I’m not about to shout obscenities to his face if I see him and if he posts here I wouldn’t type the words you type just because I disagree with him.
Quote:
Dispute me, refute me, agree or disagree with me, you little bastard, but don't ever again patronize me.
Bastard? Let me guess, it’s OK for you to do it towards me because I do to you right? If not, is this another hypocritical moment? If I patronized you, which I didn’t, but if I did then I apologize.
Quote:
I recall Shelly saying that speaking with you, at times, is like speaking with a cantaloupe. If I were you I would take that as a compliment.
Nope, not a compliment, but yet another feeble personal attack that is customary out of you, but unfortunate out of a person of Shelly’s character.
Incredible! What arrogance, Whippersnapper! It's sad that your limited intellect is incapable of grasping the extent of your presumption.
When you say, "Duh!" to Noreen do you not consider that a personal (affront) attack? Do you not recognize that there is a difference between a lady and some dude you are shooting hoops with in the driveway? That incident marked a sea change in my attitude toward you.
But, of course, you don't recognize that. That, and much more, always a subliminal aside from you, is why I suggested you pull in your elbows.
But I waste my breath, and I don't have that many left to me.
Good luck, Whippersnapper. No doubt, you'll someday make a fine little Burgermeister -- your nest will be well feathered and you will not notice the trains or smell the stench.
No. Sorry. I can see how you think it was meant towards her, but it wasn't anything like that. As usual you're latching on to one immaterial object and won't let go.
Quote:
I've already answered this question. You nag me for asking stupid questions, what about you and your ability to ask the same question over and over and over and over again?
Quote:
But, of course, you don't recognize that. That, and much more, always a subliminal aside from you, is why I suggested you pull in your elbows.
When will you realize that how you talk and treat people is scores worse than a playful meaningless "duh"? Really, of all of my responses and posts that is the one question I would like an answer for.
Where do you get off ragging at people about manners and how to talk to others when you are without a doubt one of the most foul people I have ever known?
I have given much of my time to you I don't think an answer is too much to ask. Now I'm not demanding one out of you, you can fluff this one off like others if you wish.
Here's a clue, concentrate on the sentence that Burgermeister was in.
I'm not going to put any more effort into it. It's like trying to figure out a magic trick. I'll give it some time, but after awhile I'll move on.
By "good German" or "good burgermeister" he is referring to German civilians who denied knowing that there were such things as concentration or death camps in their towns with trainloads of people arriving and never departing, or cremation ovens that produce the "stench".
In other words, the Holocaust was all the fault of those "other Germans, not me, I'm a good German, I didn't know anything about it."
Ostensibly because you don't harbor the same hyperbolic degree of aversion to whatever his cause of the moment is, President Bush or the VFW or Michael Vick or one of his latest traumas: "drunken assholes shooting each other down with their penile extensions".
It is a weak analogy, your best bet is to raise Godwin's Law and walk away knowing you're the better man.
You seem to be well grounded in the real world, stay there, and don't buy into the condescending beatdowns that are his standard. Respond only with the facts, he boots enough of those to make it easy to fire back.
Wow, I had no idea. I kept focusing on being a mayor in a small town who was oblivious of the real world.
Thanks for the clarification. It's too bad you're going to be flamed into the dirt for it.
You put more into it than I intended, but you came pretty close.
Now, perhaps you would care to document where I boot the facts. This is not a court of law, but surely you must produce some evidence before I'm assigned the gallows.
If I am so easy, please continue. I ache to learn.
I don't have the time or the desire to document your gaffes, I probably don't even see most of them. But this one was so memorable and recent it is still in my memory: "Iraqais and Iranians consider themselves Persian."
You could alleviate 100% of the problem if you would include your previous proviso in your posts: "And sometimes I think I\'m smarter than I am. I don\'t consult Britannica to confirm my "factoids" before, during or after I post."
A Burgermeister is a mayor. Nothing else. Burg is city or town, and meister is master. A burger is one who lives in a city or town.
Which part of it?
OK - the old folks part.
No you're not excluded. You are old folks and it is a privilege, no matter how serendipitous the circumstance, to have made your acquaintance. I take most of what you have to say to the bank.
Thus far it pays dividends.
Have to disagree with you in principle on this one James...
You may want to respect his motivations, but an argument based on fallacy does not automatically deserve respect. He did what he thought was right. Granted. I respect that. He fails to see reality after his tragic loss. I do not respect that.
And the last line "It's no time for politics." Please...
I have faced that reality.
When I was eight-years-old, I awoke at three-seventeen (three-seventeen-on the-dot) in the morning according to the clock on the hospital-ward wall, to discover alone in the silent dark that I was rendered forever and irrevocably a cripple. While I slept in surgery, in order to give me a chance at a life that cancer was certain to take, they had taken a leg from me.
My first thoughts were that never again would I be able to chase down a fly ball or ride my bicycle. And that the pretty little girl who sat at the desk in front of me in class, who's pigtails I pulled and who I loved beyond reason, and who flirted with me in return, would never look on me again except out of either pity or curiosity.
That was my roadside bomb. But I was a child and adaptable. My tears turned quickly to resolve and I got on with it.
But, this is a man. A young soldier, thumbs-up self-assured, vibrant and filled with the prospect of life and committed to his community and his ideals. And now brought to despair.
I empathize. It will take time, and many lonely nights in the dark, for his wounds to heal. I cut him enormous slack in his opinion.
That others with a political agenda use this man's time of painful transition to further their cause is unconscionable.
I don't know in what parts of the country this commercial is airing. Nor do I know how long it's been on TV as I don't watch much TV.
But I just want everyone to see it.
Anyone going to argue with him?
It's airing in the parts where republicans stand a very good chance to losing the election to a democrat in congress.
That commercial will make everyone realize how glad they are that it didn't happen to them. But when people are in voting booths it will matter little.
We will not be in Iraq forever, at some point, 4000, 5000, 50,000 dead soldiers and marines, eventually the govt pull out and return the troops home. Probably because the national credit card will be maxed out. Here is hoping that the troops don't have to pay for the return ticket home.
Unfortunately our president is delusional, (just listen to him talk on TV) and with 26 months left in office that means approximately 2000 more troops will die, more than that will get blown up.
While I was at youtube I found this one by Bill Maher...
Bill Maher.
It provides a nice counter point to your link.
This one just for fun...
Bush Scandels.
Actually it's way less than that, more like about 17 months:
I think we will start withdrawing troops way before then. I just read an article last night where Bush is getting ready to ask Congress for additional emergency funds from congress before September.
Thanks for the links, the commemorative plates are a classic!
That commercial, and more to come, is th work of Ari Fleisher, former White House Press Secretary, and is being financed by a new right wing group calling themselves Freedom's Watch.. It is a cynical exploitive use of soldiers who have served and suffered the consequences.
It is part of a new full court press in preparation for the reports to Congress in September that are expected to cause mass defections of Republicans in congress afraid they will be voted our of office.
