"Finally A Compromise !"

Subject: Finally! a compromise

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

< BR>
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl.

Reminds me !Every Thursday AM is my golf day !!We had a 5.6 mag earthquake a short while ago.Lost a few glass trinkets which was fortunate since it was one of thosw "BAM!" then "roll for 20+ seconds" or so.Its epicenter was 5 miles deep 10 miles from us.Scarey while it is rolling !I hope we get no major aftershock!Got thorough on the phone to my sister who lives alone. She was OK but sounded like she was speaking the new language since she was shook up!(literally) No MAJOR damage reported so far.

Phew! My late uncle and aunt who resided in Carmel used to regale me with stories of earth tremors - but, he said they were nothing like the bombs, which I remember vividly, dropped on my home town during WW11.
All's well, as long as nothing interferes with your Golf....

WW11??? You must be back from the far distant future. Can you reveal the outcome of WW3 through WW11?

Or, did you mean WWII?

Jim.

Carmel is a nice little town on the coast not too far from San Jose ,my home. It's northern border is the Pebble Beach Golf Course.I hope they had a chance to play it while they were here.Green fees are over 300 dollars now).I 've experienced many earthquakes since I moved here in 1956 and the only one in our area that was a disaster was in 1989.
I spent some time in England during WW2 and agree the bombs were a hell of a lot worse but at least predictable(every night)I have an admiration for the Englih ppeople born of that experience. The constant pounding was unbelievable to those who never experienced it !

My wonderful son who writes English as a second language is visiting the States now so we converse with him with IM. His spelling is very creative but extremely understandable. Next semester he begins engineering school at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology and has tested out of English classes. I hope they force him to improve his English writing.
