"You've heard of the Shuttle - met the Skuttle!"

Hi Friends, Please forgive me a little fun. The Shuttle, being pushed by the PC manufacturers has just been surpassed. Here in England we have developed an eco-friendly, light, albeit rather slow compact Desktop PC. From recycled bits from my shed, the spec is as follows:-
Mobo with 500Mb AMD, and 3 old PC100 ramsticks 64Mb each, 250w PSU, and a 6x yes 6x CD. Please note there is NO hdd. Oh and there's a switch. Admittedly the CD is so slow it takes about 10 minutes to boot, but it does work!!!
The secret? well a very clever Dutchman named Bart Lagervij, has produced a program to create a boot disk, and with plugins, one can compile many programs to work on the CD. You can learn more on his site here:-

So grab the Ductape, the cardboard and string, and get building, it's better than watching TV! Or maybe I should get out a bit more!!
Sincerely,
Richard.

Isn't it amazing how much fun you can have with the "OLD" machines? If you are not into Linux yet, you might download Knoppix. It will run well on that machine. You can download an ISO file here:
http://www.knoppix.org/

Also some of the old DOS games will play well on that machine. You can make a ramdisk of two or three meg, and play all sorts of games by copying them from disk to ramdisk. I used to put zipped games on floppies, and pkunzip on the same with a bat file that would unzip them to to a two meg ramdisk, and and then start the games. That was where I kept my grandkids occupied.

Hi Bill, Thanks for that! Yes I have Knoppix, but I hadn't thought to try it in my cardboard machine! I had thought it might be possible to introduce more material with floppies, but unfortunately the Skuttle doesn't have one! Well hey I might just splash out £5 on a FDD - unless someone throws one out first!
Sincerely,
Richard.
