"Red Wines....."
Sat Dec-11-04 01:07 AM by _Chewy_

Hi guys, just enjoying a nice quiet evening at home, listening to some Sarah McLachlin and enjoying a really nice red wine I bought at my local supermarket. I"m really not a wine person but on rare occasions, I will throw caution to the wind and try a new bottle. It's called Black Opal from South Eastern Australia and it's kicking my a*s pretty good right now. It's a cabernet & merlot mix and I gotta tell ya, for a guy that doesn't fancy wine too often, it's quite tastey! I'm surprised for a $8 bottle wine, it's got so much spice and kick to it! Bottom's up.

Wow, a holiday kiss from Priscilla, a "good story" with Jan...what kind of wine is that you be drinking again?? Must be going to your head already!!

==============================================================

I can't hardly remember the Ribbles... name stands out but I can't picture it....and there is no way I would touch MadDog 20/20, not then, nor now. I remember that being passed around at parties back then and you would just chug it from the bottle... everyone's lips touched it... around and around...Oh the thought of it now! lol

OK, Boone's Farm drinker, do you remember Ripple in various flavors? It was all I could afford back when Monday Night football first aired. Ripple and popcorn - what a treat.

How about MadDog 20/20, remember it?

Jim.

I seem to recall seeing that label at Sam's. I'll have to look again.

I doubt it. Paul is a banana bender and they are not renown for their
wines. I think he was referring to Australia as a whole.

Mickoz, I was born and raised in SA and lived there until 33 years of age, but I think there are good wines all over Australia, including a few in Queensland (early days yet). On the whole, the best Shiraz probably comes from the Barossa, and Cabernets from the Hunter Valley and the Coonawarra, but there are good blends from all over, including some bloody good stuff from WA, where it's still a fairly young industry.

And just so you don't feel left out, Rutherglen dessert wines are incomparable.

Well thankyou Paul, I learnt something new today. I am not a wine buff
and didn't know that Queensland produced wine. One was going off your
weather and I didn't think that would support the growing of grapes.
After a quick google search I can see I was very wrong to think that.
Thanks for enlightening me.

You would most probably have found Stanthorpe somewhere in there. It's well inland and elevated so the humidity is low and it has winter mornings any Victorian or South Australian would recognise, right down to heavy frost. The entire area is one huge market garden (except for the vineyards).

But I'd have to say the Queensland Government page I found is exaggerating just a wee bit. Funny, that.

I would have bought in earlier, but I'm just back from a tour of the Yarra Valley wineries here in Victoria. Lucky I wasn't driving, although the samples aren't what they used to be.
Nice part of the world here, and about 40 minutes from where I live! I'm not a wine buff, but I know a big Aussie red when I taste one!

I have been stuck on the same brands of red wine (from California) for years. I have a local liquor store with a huge wine inventory. They have wines from many countries. Will have to check out the "wines from OZ," next time I'm in the store.

I like Cabernet Sauvignon and sometimes Merlot. The only white wine I love is a Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Kabinett.

(So who has tried this fine New Zealand wine: CAT'S PHEE ON A GOOSEBERRY BUSH? No joke, ask Mr. Google, it is a real wine)

Oh, bloody great! Now the wine industry is taking to naming their products like the beer industry started doing in the '80s when Frog Spit Beer bacame a hit.
