"A bug in the DC script?"
Tue Dec-28-04 07:32 PM by _Chewy_

Lately, i've noticed a strange quirk in some of the postings
here. Sometimes, when you use the ampersand symbol in the
postings, it somehow seems to affect the rest of the title.
For example when you look at Pilgrim's posting, you see:

"What are "JETxxxx.tmp" files"

How is the [b]&quot[/b] getting in there by itself? I've
noticed this happens quite freqently and worse yet, it seems
to multiply. A classic example is this thread:

http://www.pcqanda.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=2&topic_id=340591&mesg_id=340591&page=6

You'll notice how the [b]:amp[/b] keeps increasing w/ each
successive response.

Has anyone else noticed this? What's going on here?

I had to post this in plain text to show the codes.

It's been like that forever, it also does that in some of the post titles as well.

DCForums, I don't know why we still use it. The quote system is laughable, posting a reply on page two takes you back to page one so you have to manually click on page 2 to see your reply (and any others that were posted while you were posting), there are no img/url tags (unless you add a # to the end of a url that is an image file, which doesn't always work correctly,) so if you want to unparse a url you have to use the code checkbox or use the bracket code bracket system (like this)

DCScripts is a worthless pile of dogcrap

VBulletin has so many customizable functions and features that it could be configured to look almost identical to what we are used to.

If that's the case, i wonder why we still use DC. My only guess is that the mods put it for a vote at one point and the majority opinion ruled. Or perhaps it was simple matter of economics and VBulletin was too expensive. I dunno - just guessing.

As I recall, we didn't find anything else that we liked. Now, this decision was made several years ago, when the forum software options were not like they are today.

Compared to itself, DCForum is the superior forum script, there's no denying that.

Forum members are very conservative. We have already seen strong negative reactions from the members of this forum when we updated to new versions of the DC Forum script, and they were faced with slight changes in script behavior.

Those of us that have been around long enough remember the almost visceral reaction that was expressed on the WinMag Forum when we had a change in color format when we changed that to a new script. Jason was the webmaster of that forum, and he was put through hell for months because of the change in font color, and background color.

We have now used this script, I think, going on six years. It has evolved and improved with every upgrade. To the bulk of the membership it's comfortable, like an old pair of shoes. Any abrupt change in the format of the forum would cause major heartburn for many of our community.

VBuletin has the ability to import the threads, statistics and archives from a number of other forums, DC Forum does not appear to be one of them. It also costs somewhat more than our script, and is subject to certain restrictions on the licensee. It would increase our annual expenses, which we now have an annual struggle raising.

There are a lot of good forum scripts out there, some may be better than ours, and some are definitely worse. This one has served us well for a long time and keeps improving. Should we embark on changing our format each year as someone comes out with a slightly better mousetrap? Or stay with what we have and evolve with it? Ultimately, that decision is as much up to our membership as it is to the staff. But it will not be on the personal whim of an individual, with the membership desires ignored.

The only change I would like to see is to change the yellow color to red that indicates a new post, the yellow is very hard to see unless you're sitting awful close to monitor.

That's strange, they're the same color on my screen. Perhaps small features are not as distinctly colored for your eyes?

I knew another mod would remember why we didn't change to another script. (Thank you, Shelly.)

Even if we did get new forum software, we would never please all of the people all of the time. As Shelly said, when we do forum script upgrades we get many folks upset, confused, and some can't figure out how to sign on after a major upgrade!

I participate in many forums and still haven't found the perfect "forum software." All of them have their own "weirdness and glitches."

We love all of you, and would not have a forum without you. You guys and gals are the forum, not us mods that wander in out. The forum participants are also the source of most of our income, via buying from our advertisers or directly contribututing.

You're missing a very important consideration here. The reason we had to stick with DCForum (besides the fact that we like it), was years of forum data from the old CGI based forum, we didn't want to lose. Forums, posts, accounts, user settings and avatars... etc.

This script is fast and reliable and the only problems we've had have been mostly minor cosmetic niggles.

That was already mentioned, that Vbulletin can't import data from DCForums or DCForums+. As far as shoes go, I hate old shoes and immediately throw them away lest they stink up the place.

Was curious and did a little searching. It does appear to be a script problem
as you can read in this post here. I will keep an eye on the thread though
it does seem a bit quiet there.
