How about fuel for an airplane? I asked today and was told it was up to $3.75/gallon! Fortunately, the airplane I fly for fun (a Piper Cub) is able to use auto gas instead of aviation fuel, and it only burns about 4 gallons per hour.

On the other hand, the airplane I need to use to get somewhere (Cessna 206), uses about 15 gallons per hour and requires aviation grade fuel. It's been spending quite a bit of time on the ground lately.

Well lets see, it is currently hovering around a dollar a litre, so
thats about $4.50 a gallon. Now that is in Aussie dollars. To convert
that to US, our dollar is roughly three quarters of your dollar at the
moment, so it is around $3.40 (US) per gallon here.

Just traveled from upstate NY where it was $2.259 to Binghamton NY, where I filled up at $2.299. The highest price I saw in the 200 miles was $2.359. These prices were all for regular gas.

My almost 3 acre lawn will be getting a lot longer this summer at this rate.

Mick its always dearer in these here southern states, Up home in Brissy I believe that it's still less than a dollar.
We dont seem to have that state tax that NSW and Victoria have.
Diesel is currently about the same here in Victoria. Or a little bit more. Premium is usually an extra five to eight cents more.

In God we trust, everybody else pays cash...

Yesterday in S. Ga., $2.229, regular unleaded, at Wal-Mart, DH said. Another store, usually the most expensive, was %2.169. No telling today, it's up and up around here, never down, it seems.
I called a couple stores last week to check prices as DH prepared to go fill up for work. One store refused to tell me their price. To me, that's ridiculous as they post it on the sign out front. I politely told the clerk to tell her manager that under those circumstances we would buy our gasoline elsewhere. I guess, though, that they were apparently either getting lots of calls (no, the phone line was not busy when I called) about the price, or either they were so high compared to some stores, that they just didn't want to announce it on the phone and lose a customer for sure.
Our prices are always higher than the bigger city stores.
How, please, someone tell me why all of the oil from Alaska is sold outside the U.S., and they want to drill more there to sell elsewhere. Explain, please. Thanks!

US oil companies sell to the highest bidder. They could not care less about the US customer. If they want to drill in Alaska and sell it elsewhere, the government should tax the hell out of them for every drop they sell offshore. Fat chance of that with our current government.

You're all gits.

Unleaded fuel is hovering around 80p per litre at the moment.

0.8 x 3.785 = £3.028 per US gallon
3.028 x 1.877 = $5.68 per US gallon

A few days ago, I stopped to fill up with diesel. When I noticed the price was one tenth of a penny below 90p per litre, I drove on

We're going $2.37 - $2.39 in Ann Arbor, MI. Just hovering below $2.40, but I wouldn't be surprised to see $2.50 or more by summer. On the other hand, I think we have been spoiled, considering prices in Europe, etc.

I just tanked up at $2.34/gallon a couple of hours ago here in Central Ohio. And that is for a van that has dual tanks that hold 40 gallons total. My bill for that fill up was a little over$65. This city typically has higher fuel prices than the surrounding area.

I gave up on trying to locate the cheapest places in the are to tank up at. The cost in travel (and time) isn't worth it. I do know where some usually cheaper stations are along the areas that I travel in and try to tank up while I'm there. It can easily be a dime a gallon difference, perhaps more sometimes. For right now with the continually climbing prices everybody is priced the same.

99.9 cents per litre here in Nova Scotia for regular self serve today. That would be $3.09 US for 1 US gal.

In this very small town in central Nevada it was $2.49 gal. when I filled up on Monday. Good thing my Subaru gets pretty good mileage and I only drive to work and back, 14 mile round trip. I remember when gas was less than 20 cents a gallon, I must be much older than some of you

The cheapest that I can remember seeing was on a rural road east of Ft Levanworth, Kansas. It was 19 cents and the station was on the honor system, you put the money in a drop box. The pumps were the old "glass bottle" types. Went out of business about 8 months later after a couple of robberies of the drop box with someone breaking the pumps drunig the second robbery.

Just so you don't have to rack your brain and figure it out I am 55, and I was in high school a very long time ago. But gasoline prices stayed around 20-30 cents for quite a long time if I remember right, now they go up almost every day.

I live in Los Angeles Ca. but was down in Carlsbad Ca. Sunday which is about 95 miles south of L.A. Paid 2.54 for the 89 premuim at a Shell station. 14 gal of gas was a little over $35 bucks. So i guess this means i won. (unfortunatley). This is not a good way to catch up on my spending. lol

I'm afraid we have passed the point of no return, and can expect high gas prices until gas is replaced in large measure by alternative fuels and nobody wants it anymore. The best we can hope for in the mean time is that market forces cause the price to stabilize at some point, but that point is likely to be between $2.00 to $3.00 a gallon.

We need a crash program to advance the fuel cell program to a point where we have practically priced vehicles and an infrastructure for hydrogen distribution. Then those terrorist supporting states can take an oil enema.

It will take a decade to mature the technology and build the infrastructure to the point where consummers will accept fuel cell vehicles in great numbers, even with a crash program. The effort will be made only because the price per mile of driving a gas powerd car is reaching parity with a fuel cell alternative. The only advantage to fuel cells is the greater availability of hydrogen that is not under the control of hostile nations, it is certainly not a low cost technology.

Don't take this as a criticism on you. You just happened to make me think about it. I don't see why people get all wound up over the price going up or down by a couple cents. Using your example I would only save 75¢ on a full tank of gas. That's not even enough for me to buy a pop at the local convenience store. Every one I know will go gaga over a couple pennies and drive out of their way to go to that gas station. I personally couldn't give a rat’s ass for a couple cents, I get gas at whatever station happens to be convenient at the time I need it. Now this latest big jump was a bit different, it made a difference of about $3 a tank.

A five cent drop is nice, but not worth going out of the way for. However, the pricing habits of gas stations over the past few years has been to gradually reduce prices over several days and then have a twenty cent jump in one day. That's what really angers people.

Agree to both, but a nickel here, a nickel there kind of relates to the old saying in Washington about a billion here and there adds up to real money. I don't worry about the day to day increase in what it costs to fill my tank, but the month to month or year to year starts getting to be a concern. It's not just the direct cost to you and me but the hidden costs that add to everything we buy that is transported by motor.

I still boil at the obvious collusion in the manner of price increases. Supposedly, the authorities have investigated and found no evidence that would support anti-competitive communications between separate oil outlets, but how in the h**l do you explain the simultaneous increases that suddenly appear? Why does the gas in the storage tank suddenly increase in value when none of the "new" higher price gas has been received?

I am still a fan of removing government controls, i.e. regulation, but this is an industry that is just begging for the re-imposition of price controls. Every summer it seems, we have a refinery that has to go down for repair, or there's a breakdown at another one that warrants a jump in prices. It just smells of Enron tactics.

This winter, our natural gas company warned of an increase in cost of gas and, sure enough, there was one that almost doubled my heating bills. Then, it just as suddenly got cheaper and the new rate just happened to start after the dates of major usage. All of this while reports of storage showed that the amount available was higher than previous years, and that applies to gasoline, too.

It just stinks. We're being held up by the future traders and the manipulators of commodity pricing. Look at the headlines -- "The price of (insert what you want) rose today on the fears of alack of capacity to produce what our crystal ball thinks we might use."

End of rant

This is possible at least in part by using accounting practices that are accepted by the Financial Accounting Standards Board. There are four ways to account for inventory on hand, two of which we'll look at.

First in, first out
Quite simply, the first inventory that comes in is the first sold.

First in, Last out
The newest inventory is sold.

Pretty much all businesses use one or the other of these methods, and the advantages are obvious. By showing on the books what was sold, you can sell the higher priced stuff and keep the cheaper stuff. This helps when it comes to paying taxes because the taxes will be on the less costly stuff, which means lower taxes.

The oil industry is most likely using the First in, Last out method currently so that they can keep their taxes down and raise prices.

It does account for the pricing. A business can use one or the other, but not not both during the same accounting period. There is another method of reporting inventory called Averaging, which is just what it sounds like. By using that method, prices up or down can be passed through pretty readily with less potential for a windfall profit that the other methods are capable of.

A huge chunk of the pricing for fuel comes directly from crude. The rates now a well over $50/barrel which is resulting in our current prices. Years back when the price of gas was close to sixty cents/gallon, the price of crude was below $10/barrel.

For right now it's being reported that the price of crude have been dropping sharply for the past several days because the market was greatly over bought. That sharp edge needs to be honed if ask me.

Don't be deceived by the often quoted spot market crude price. The big oil companies have long term contract pricing for the oil they buy, well below current spot market pricing. I you can be sure they are probably using the same ruse they were using back in the 1973 oil crunch, transferring crude at sea to turn lower cost crude to higher cost crude. Lets see, an increase of $5.00 a barrel for a tanker load is how much?

In Bluffton, SC near Hilton Head, prices are fluctuating but generally around $2.19 for regular.

In Georgia, known for lower gas taxes, prices are relatively high. I saw $2.50 for premium in Savannah three days ago.

I traded in my Dodge Dakota with its 4.7 liter engine to reduce payments on her new Town and Country with its 3.8 liter engine. She needs the van for her business and for safety and comfort amenities for her arthritis and lupus.

I'm driving her old 97 Caravan.

Our total fuel consumption has dropped slightly. And I combine trips more often.

I'm looking at a lower cost vehicle down the road a ways. Probably something along the line of a Honda Element or possibly a hybrid.

Yeah, we need to cut back. It's getting quite expensive at the petrol pump.

I walked by the gas station this afternoon and it was sitting at 2.30/gallon. Thankfully our Metro gets a lot better mileage than the Impala (I think that's about 35 MPG vs. 14 MPG). Probably about 5 cents cheaper 8 miles away in Moscow.

Dropped down in Ann Arbor to about $2.23. Still doesn't warrant a smiley face yet.

Regular is currently between $2.259 at cheaper stations, to $2.349 at the high end in Jacksonville.

Here is an interesting side note. In Florida cities are allowed to add a local tax to gas. the additinal tax in Jacksonville is, and has been for years, 6 cents per gallon for all grades. The interesting thing is that I have never seen a 6 cent per gallon difference between gas in jacksonville, and other parts of the state that impose no local tax. Isn't that odd?

I made the same 400 mile round trip from near Buffalo to Binghamton, NY, and regular was $2.339 at the cheapest station. The odd thing I noted was that the mid and top level were $2.439 and $2.539. This exact 10 cent difference was at around 90% of the stations. This seems a little too easy to be that way over such a distance. Last week when I made the same trip it was 4 cents cheaper, but the same 10 cents grade difference.

The price is down to $2.04 here in Central Ohio. Sure beats when it was 30 cents higher a couple of weeks ago. Every dime saves me about $3.50 on a fillup for the van.

Michigan is right next door to Ohio, JP, and we're paying $2.39 a gallon
here. I suppose that extra .35 cents a gallon we pay is for all of that
transportation.

One of the largest refineries is in Chicago, which supplies at least part of Ohio. Go figure.

"The number of gasoline retailers reportedly fell to about 167,000 in 2004 from more than 200,000 a decade earlier." This is a quote from a news story I just read. It went on to say that retailers are making a little more than 10 cents per gallon. In 1967, my dad ran a service station on the interstate and made a nickel a gallon. Gasoline was 32 cents per gallon then, and it was higher where he was on the interstate than it was in the towns away from I-75.

A friend of mine owned a gas station in the 1970's during that gas shortage. Everytime the tanker truck came he had to pay about $10,000 in cash or check before they would pump his delivery. I shudder to think how much that costs station owners today.
