"Jumping Icons"
Mon Dec-17-01 09:10 PM

Brother in law called this mornig with new problem. Desktop icons seem to jump away from the mouse on the desktop. I haven't heard of this one before. Nor am I sure that what he said is really what is happening 'till I get over there this afternoon to look at it.
Thought I'd post though this morning in case this rings a bell with anyone. Win98se

John,

The W32.Magistr.24876@mm is one possible reason. Other reasons can be be old mouse drivers, or old video drivers, or ...

if his pc is recovered, is the virus still there?/

& wad does this means ?? If the computer has been infected for three months, then the infected file is deleted.

does this means the virus is deleted after 3months?

I would virus scan with some other av and see if it finds anything. after 3 months it deletes the file does not mean its gone.I think It means it deleted the original file not the ones it infected or is about to infect.read the info at the link.try having it looked at on line at housecalls..

Trend Micro has separate tools for the variants (more recent variant has more steps for removal).

http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=PE_MAGISTR.B

I'd have him run a Free on-line housecall virus scan from the link below.

Could someone be playing a trick on him? This site -http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/entertainment/ - has a good number of freeware downloads that will brighten the day of every office joker. One even causes the Start button to avoid the cursor, which is at least similar to what he is experiencing. I don't see anything listed for the exact problem but if the Start button can be made to avoid the cursor, so could icons, I presume.

Jim.

I posted this exact prob here last week for a friend's computer, thanks to someone here at PC911 I was given the direction to MAJISTR virus and that's what it turned out to be. It was given its marching orders via Trend Micro.Jim (They had NAV installed but it was about 6 months out of date--ya just gotta keep up....)

Okey, I went over there a few moments ago after work and it's the damndest thing I've ever seen.
He has about 25 icons on his desktop and when he passes the mouse over them on the way to a folder they all flicker and re align their positions. They stay in the grid okey but change position all over and whatever icon is in the upper left corner, for example, is now down in the middle somewhere.
Auto arrainge is checked.
This started sometime last night. He has DSL, no firewall and has not updated or run NAV for the last 6 months since I went over and did it for him.
He said DSL installer told him it wasn't necessary....so who am I to tell him different....
If I'm home alone here now, while I'm typing this, you can't hear me screaming, he absolutly refuses to do what is needed or pretends not to understand the need......... Tomorrow I'll update his NAV and run it and I also have a copy of the current Trend stuff too.
I'll let you all know....

EEYOUAHAARAGHUUGHE no smiley strong enough to express my.......

This payload is similar to that of W32.Kriz, and it does the following:
Deletes the infected file
Erases CMOS (Windows 9x/Me only)
Erases the Flash BIOS (Windows 9x/Me only)
Overwrites every 25th file with the text YOUARESHIT as many times as it will fit in the file
Deletes every other file
Displays the following message: (well You know)

If this all happens(info from NAV site) what repair options are there?

Lonnie, I love it......

And now, this just in........
I twisted brotherinlaws arm and convinced him to purchase and download a copy of NAV 2001 (2002 won't run on his machine), updated the defs and went into the jungle....

Found 31 files infected with Magistr .39921 which is a slightly different than the original ver.
29 repaired, 2 quarantined.

And what I don't understand is why the writers of these virii give themselves away with things like the icons jumping all over the place. If they really wanted to do some damage they could just go on in there quietly and royally screw things up long before anyone would notice the damage.
Nevertheless, I set NAV up for automatic functions on everything so he doesn't have to think about it....not that he ever did.....

Being a lady, but in a 'naughty' mood this morning, I would say 'does she help him to wipe his ___?'
sorry, but he really sounds like he is in dire need of having his 'common sense' re-hashed abit.
People that purchase a computer and perpherials shouldn't be allowed out of the store without the salesperson making that person purchase antivirus and firewall software...you know - alarms going off at exit doors with voice over the speakers stating 'Buy the antivirus and firewall protection or you will regret it'.
Told ya I was in a 'naughty' mood.
