""out of memory" error messages during DVD backup..."
Has anyone been getting "out of memory" error messages with newer DVD's while trying to back them up? Madagascar and Toy Story 2 have been locking up and seizing my computer forcing a hard-reset while trying to back up those DVD's. Using DVD Shrink and AnyDVD/Nero Recode 2 have the same results. Researched it online and found that there is a new version of Macrovision Ripguard out that is causing this.
There are several complicated workarounds out using various programs, but the easiest I have found is to use AnyDVD together with CloneDVD2. I'm not sure why AnyDVD defeats Ripguard used in conjunction with CloneDVD, but not in conjunction with Recode or Shrink.
Somehow Ripguard uses the entire program buffer until it reaches zero, causing the program to stop and in some cases (with Shrink) causes a hard lock up (can't even ctrl-alt-del out of it). This happens no matter what the windows swap file is set to.
It definitely helps to have a whole suite of tools to "archive" DVD's these days. We better back up our movies while we still can, as I think our days are numbered with hardware-based DRM solutions around the corner. Looks like we are going to have to solder "mod chips" into our motherboards and dvd-burners in the future, not to mention hacking Vista.

These forums seem to have more information: http://club.cdfreaks.com/

Looks like someone over there was able to do it successfully.... "I was able to back up Madagascar with DvdDecryptor and Dvd shrink.I just used dvd decryptor first then shunk it with dvdshrink." http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=156785

I take back the info in my first post- I was able to successfully burn the movie using AnyDVD/CloneDVD. But it did not play in my computer or stand-alone. I followed all the advice in the links provided above (using DVD Decryptor to make an ISO, then use Daemon Tools to mount the image, then burn it in Shrink- did not work). What I wound up doing was using AnyDVD to decrypt/DVD Decryptor to burn an ISO/then buring the ISO to DVD in NERO. It burneed successfully AND plays in my players. Man, what a chore- it took me like 4 hours to figure this out.

Slysoft is on top of this. Here an e-mail I just got from them:
Dear valued customer,
we would like to inform you, that a new version of AnyDVD has been released. Here the list of fixes and improvements:
5.8.2.1, 2006 01 11
- New: Added support for a new version of the Sony Arccos protection as found on "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" R2 (Swiss German) to the option to remove "Protection based on unreadable Sectors" NOTE: This Arccos version is not yet supported with DVDShrink and Nero Recode. With elby CloneDVD 2.8.5.1 the quality bar will not work, but this is only a cosmetic problem. We will try to support this Arccos version better in the future.
