"Save/Open Dialog Box"

I was trying to help my sister with a problem she always has with opening .pdf files in Email. I just set up a new computer for she and her husband with two profiles. She has the problem, he doesn't so I am convinced that it is something she always does to create the problem because she had the same problem with her old computer. I figured out what she had done and now I have the same problem myself in trying to recreate the problem so I could tell her how to fix it. It is probably an easy fix but I don't know the proper questions to ask to search for the answer. In the Save/Open dialog box that pops up you have the choice to select save or open. There is also a check box to always apply the selection. I figured out that she has been checking this box to always open the file. The unintended consequence of doing this is the Save/Open Dialog box never comes up again. How do I get it back? I suspect it is going to require a registry edit or it is so simple that I can't imagine what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having a hard time finding what it is called, that open attachment box in your link is not it. It used to open when I would download a .pdf or program in my browser. You could select download or open and there is a checkbox to always select this function. That is what I did selected always open. Apparently there is no way to go back because the box no longer appears. I did a system restore and that did not correct it. They should have a warning on that check box (select at your own peril).

I don't understand because the article describes and displays the exact message windows I have always seen when attempting to open or save a .pdf or other attachment in Outlook - though I do have a very old version of Outlook.

But, as I was clicking within Outlook, I came across a setting that set any subsequent re-opening of the same attachment in Outlook to be remembered in the same way it was opened or saved in the initial opening or saving. (or something like that )

In other words, try sending a different .pdf to yourself or have someone else send one to you.

If that makes any difference, let me know and I'll try to find the setting again.

Jim.

We need to determine what program is being used to access email. Grey Falcon just states that he and his sister are using "Email." What program are you using? Outlook, Thunderbird, the native Windows 10 Mail app? Or is it webmail? If so, which browser are you using?

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

Her problem was in Thunderbird where it showed up. It is a Windows 10 popup. At first I thought it was from Adobe Reader DC but as I poked around I realized it is Windows 10 probably Power Shell. The dialogue box is transparent or white with round buttons to choose Open or save. There may be a third choice at the bottom that I never used or paid much attention to. It is directly related to downloads of any kind. Download something and the option box should pop up unless you have changed it in Windows. I had always left it defaulted to download until I changed it trying to help my sister. I will reinstall windows If I can't find a solution to bring it back. My windows could probably use a refresh anyway but it may not fix it since it also saves files programs and settings. It is not important enough to do a clean install but bugs me to no end. Her problem in Email is that it opens the .PDF she wants to print but does not display the proper toolbars so she can get the printer box to open so she can choose fit to page. part of the .PDF sent from her Church is in a non standard format and it will not print the whole list unless she can select fit to page.

I think all you need to do is go to wherever the programs used for opening files is located and change it to nothing for pdf, if you want to be asked every time. The box is usually unchecked by default, so tell your sister (or whomever it was) to stop checking it.

So where would that be, I would be glad to change it back? As for my sister, the last time she did this I figured out how to fix it but for the life of me I can not do it now. I'm pushing 73 now and my memory is not what it used to be.

Yeah, I'm muddling through converting to medicare as we speak

I had assumed she was accessing mail through her browser, so it would be in browser options. But if it's W-10, I dunno, I"m on W7.

So, in W7, if I hold shift key while right-clicking a file, there will be an option to "open with." If you can get to that, just follow your nose. You might not have to hold the shift key.

I will get a screen shot of the pop up window off of a hard drive with win 10 on it that activated on my computer after I stripped it of drivers. I don't know how it did that coming from a Intel board and booting up on a AMD system, but maybe getting a picture of it might help and if I can find the keys for the registry for a working model then I should be able to fix mine. Identifying what I am talking about is the big hurdle.
